Interesting stat

Good info. Thank you for sharing.

With regards to his comments on King, the only really good team on the schedule is Clemson. He throws it well enough to beat the other teams. And if you stack the numbers in his advantage (which will happen when teams try to stop our running attack), his passing will be more effective.

I don’t know what our record will be. The next two games will be telling. But I don’t see King’s passing holding us back at this level. Much more concerned about pass blocking and receivers.
I think he's at least as good a passer as Nick Marshall, and Auburn won a lot of games with him and had a pretty good offense. You don't have to throw it like Drew Brees to win in the ACC, especially the way King runs and leads.

Leading up to the game, I kept hearing how Clark is a great defensive coach and how UAB is a very good tough defensive team. We hang 500 total and 330 on the ground on them, and now they're the dregs of society.

This place is such a cesspool of misery. Dear fellow CIS'er, you're so very desultory and moribund. You ever feel like slitting your wrists but don't feel quite down enough to pull it off? Go read last night's game thread. It'll give you that little extra oomph you might need to finish the job.
Only another Natty is gonna cure these woes we listen to.

agreed.

the biggest jump is usually game one to game two. it's a cliche' but it's pretty accurate. good teams get better as the season goes along, but in small steps. game one to two can be your biggest leap.

if we see that against UL, then I'm encouraged.
I'm with you. I'll be paying attention to the progression. If we get a lot better in the 2nd game that's a great sign. If we're trying to figure out why we can't throw the ball effectively against a ****** UL defense, then we're probably not going to have a very good season. You don't have months to work **** out; you have to make quick progress and build to that crescendo like Neil Diamond.

Do you honestly think that kind of game plan is going to work every week? I don't. You do, and good for you. We can not get away with that sloppiness every week.

I'm not saying UAB is bad. I never said that. What I did say was that this approach won't work every week. We won't get away with missed passes and lack of WR separation. We won't get away with what I saw last night for very long.
I don't think a good coach tries to do the same thing every week. It was obviously good enough to beat the spread against a team that a lot of media people thought would beat us or stay within a few points of us. That's pretty good progress from our last game. It wasn't a perfect game, but I don't expect perfection in game 1.

All this lack of WR separation is being overblown unless you have access to all 22 game film. What you see on TV shows you nothing. King missed a few passes where our WRs were 4 yards behind DBs for walk in TDs. That's separation, and that's just from game footage.

Actually, I might take issue with that.

I was speaking with a senior director of college scouting for an NFL team last week, whom I have known for many years. We actually played against each other in college. He has seen King close up and has watched a lot of tape on him.

He says:

"King's a great athlete, but basically a sandlot QB. Good enough of a passer and a student of the game to beat average teams with his arm, but not nearly good enough as a passer to beat really good teams throwing the ball. Future in the NFL is in the slot. Could play 8 or 9 years there if it all goes well. He's by far the best athlete at QB that UM has on the roster, and has really good leadership and character traits. Will be great in the locker room. But the most talented QB in the room is the Van Dyke kid from Connecticut. He's just not ready yet, and King gives them the best opportunity to win games right now. But remember, even in the Major Applewhite offense, King was only 15-10 as a starter in the AAC. The ACC is tougher. He's an upgrade over the past 2 years for UM, but even with King, because of his limitations, they are no better than an 8 win team against that schedule. Lashlee will get a lot of production from that offense, but more than 8 wins? Just not seeing it. They'll really struggle with Clemson, UNC, and when they go to Blacksburg."
Agree with most but if Major was his corch that means his DC mustve been Dorito? I dont care if you are Joe Burrow/Tim Tebow/ Vince Young mixed you cant will your team to wins every week with your DC having the Dorito 500 challenge weekly

Everyone cried about the run game last year. We run 52 times for 330 yards, and they want to cry about the passing game now. Last time we saw this team, we were getting anally raped by a CUSA team and never posed a threat to score a point the whole game.

King never was and never will be a drop back dime tosser. He's never going to be Drew Brees or Russell Wilson in the throw game. But he can be an insane weapon in the run game and throwing enough to keep defenses honest. He was off yesterday, but he hasn't played in a long time and is getting used to another new system.

King brings calm. Leadership. And an incredible extra weapon in the run game. He can be an opportune passer who hits some occasional big throws or extends some drives. That run game you saw last night isn't that run game with any other QB because the defense doesn't have to account for other QBs the way they do King.

First game should be the worst game. If we can build each week that should be the goal. Even the great teams usually don't play super clean week one. Add in no spring and probably some limited work in the summer, and you can be a little sloppy offensively.
Stop being rational! Overreactions only!!!

Alright, I’ve read enough. You mopes wanted to see us drop 70 and call it a night, then catch the boys at LIV??

UAB is a formidable defensive opponent for the first game of the season (Ranked 14th in 2019), who returns 8 starters (I think). They have an above average DL (two DEs that are 6’7) and like it or not their LBs are even more rangy than our starting core. My point is that if we racked 340 rushing yards against this above average front - be happy. The OL did their job, the UAB staff schemed in the second half to stop our run. They couldn’t. We had limited offensive formations and a reduced playbook because we focused on the run as a foundational building block. It was beyond obvious that the staff wanted to run the ball all night.

passing attempts: 26
Rushing attempts: 52

With respect, it's only one game. What we saw may have been what Lashlee felt Miami needed to do to win the game. It's possible he looked at them and felt we could pound them and score points.. and then that's what he did. I think a good running game is the key to success and maybe he felt that's what he wanted to work on the most. Let's see if things change against UL as far as the run pass balance. I'm sure he's pouring over the tape and seeing what was there and what wasn't. I'd like to see more air raid also but if you can pound mofos in the ground game, you do it.

You can’t discount the fact that King had rust as far as his passing game - he missed at a very minimum two or possibly even three wide-open long downfield throws that he might ordinarily make. That changes the total complexion of the game
If that was rust, teams do not want to see King at anywhere near 100%

That double spin move he did to escape the pocket was like Vick or Barry Sanders.

Bruh, King is a world class athlete and he just shaking off the cobwebs.

He might be in New York come December. Those missed throws were nothing. If Lashlee sticks with the easy completions, lookout.

Love our RBs, but **** i wish Deejay stayed to reap the rewards of playing in this offense. He was special. He might of set some records
I grew to like deejay but I’m glad he’s in the nfl and we have moved on to even more gifted backs

Needs to tighten up.

If teams dare King to beat them with his arm, I think he’s capable.
Despite the rhetoric on the board, he looked pretty **** good at passing. He had one awful pass (td attempt), I think 2 bomb overthrows, and one or two miscommunications. Most of his other passes were spot on including that zinger brevin dropped. Those errors can be fixed, and he still had like 67% completion percentage

Truly despise this kind of prediction. I wonder what he was saying about Cam Newton when he had to transfer to a junior college, or Burrow after having to transfer from Ohio State and having one slightly decent year at LSU before his breakout. People improve.

It’s not like we rented a running QB for the opener. You realize we’ll be using this guy the entire season, right?

I'm well aware that the the guy who ran for for 80 yds (which was great, and will probably be a lot of fun to watch all year) and threw for 140 yds (which is bad, and will probably be frustrating to watch all year) will be our QB all year.

I also aware of the irony in the people who are making fun of people for overreacting to us only throwing for 140 yds are simultaneously overreacting to us running for 330 yds.

Where’s the irony? Passing game typically takes longer to gel. It’s just funny to hear people excepting running stats because of D’Eriq King. The guy is going to be busting these runs all year. That’s the great part of having him.

Who is overreacting to us running for 330 yards? And what is overreacting to running for 330 yards? Being excited about it? Being happy? Pointing out that it's our 2nd best rushing output against an FBS team since 2004? Pointing out that it was done against a defense that was supposed to be pretty good and was good stopping the run last year?

It's ok for Miami fans to be excited and happy about our team and our run game, especially coming off our last game where we did NOTHING and barely even crossed midfield the entire game against a CUSA team. It's ok, man. It's ok to be a fan. It's ok to advocate for our school and our team and our guys

I remember that time in 2019 when Tom Brady only threw for 150 yards against Buffalo, 181 against Dallas and 116 against Cincy … I was really happy the Patriots won.
