Interesting stat

King hasn’t played in a long time and has had minimal practices with our receivers who desperately need time and reps with any QB.

Mallory and Jordan will help him a TON next few games. We’ll make adjustments to get them the ball more.

UAB had a run D that has what 20thish last year. Louisville was outside of top 100.

I see us gashing them and King throwing for 2-3 TD’s. Jarren had SIX last year.

I'd be running those bigger guys underneath, especially Mallory.

With King's height and the balance of dropping deep enough to get clearance but not too deep that you make it easy for DEs to rush you, it has to be tough seeing and then hitting smaller catch radius WRs amongst the big OL bodies in his face. Give him some bigger security blankets once in a while and let the speed guys run some easy slants and speed routes outside.

It's definitely ok to be excited about our running game. I'm excited about it too. It looked great.

It's also ok to be concerned about our passing game. It looked terrible.

But our running game always looks unstoppable against CUSA. Always.

Did we look much better against CUSA teams than we did in 2019? Yes. Did we look the exact same against CUSA as we did in 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013? Yes.

It's great to have hope & excitement. It's also totally fine to have perspective.
What were our rushing numbers in our last game against La Tech. Go ahead and tell me about 2013, but tell me first about the last game we played last year against a similar opponent.

I 100% agree with you - we looked MUCH better than we did against a CUSA oppenent 1 game ago.

But we ran all over a CUSA opponent just 3 games ago. Is that going too far back?

Here's our RB's rushing totals vs CUSA opponents since 2010

So - get excited about the RB's. We should be. But let's not crown them yet until we play some real teams.

What the RB's did vs UAB great, but it wasn't special - it was pretty standard. The overreaction to our RB's after we play a CUSA team is also pretty standard.

I think I can go out on a limb and say that the Canes will win any game they rush for 300 yards.

With Lashlee being a Gus Malzahn disciple, I did predict that this offense would probably rush for 250 a game. They are off to a better than expected start, and the passing game will get a whole lot better. The Canes left a few big passing plays out there because, IMHO, the QB, TE, and WRs don’t know each other and the offense well enough. The key is whether you see improvement, and that is what I expect to see. The OL is much more talented than last season, and I expect them to get a whole lot better as the season goes along. From what I saw in comparing the OL against La Tech and against UAB, Garin Justice is the best OL coach the Canes have had in over a decade. I really don’t have many too complaints about the OL performance against UAB—not perfect, but miles ahead of last season. Lashlee also knows how to coach a running game.

I feel pretty good about where the Canes are right now. The Louisville game will go a long way in determining what kind of season that the Canes will have.

Our OC adjusts to what a defense gives him and finally pounds the ball when the opportunity is there and y’all want to hang it around his neck as an indictment.
Time will tell. I see potential problems and you see sunshine and unicorns. Good for you.

You've switched it to the RBs now. We have a QB who is arguably the best run threat from that position in college football right now. I think people are excited about the RUSHING GAME, which includes the super mobile QB, who could easily be an 800 yard rusher himself this year, which opens things up even more for our RBs.

King is the best running QB I have seen in a while. There is no doubt he's going to make some highlight reel plays all year. I just want to see something that can keep the D honest so he has more room to work his magic.

Or he's a fan and sees a nice win against a team that a lot of media folks were saying was going to beat us, a cover, 500 yards, big progress from our last game 8 months ago, and he's going to be happy about that instead of fretting about what might happen in the future.

Everyone has a different perspective. There are people who choose to celebrate the wins in life, and there are those who live in a constant state of misery and impending doom. Sure, that could be our only win this year. So, you should celebrate it even more because there's nothing you can do about what's to come.

Can you give it more than one game? One game where we chose to lean on the run game because it was working so well? When you run for 330 yards, there's no need to start slinging it all over the yard.

That's just smart football, and that's what smart coaches do. They'd rather run than throw when the run is working is so well.

There were some easy throws that King missed. Sam Howell missed some plays today too. So did Ian Book, who many are touting for the Heisman. Trevor Lawrence struggled for a few games last year early, and everyone was flipping out.

Listen, I like some things I saw, a lot, but I see problems that if uncorrected will lead to serious trouble. Now some people say they aren't problems, but rather just part of the game plan, but I don't buy that. We have some serious wrinkles to iron out.

My point has been all along, if we can't pass the ball, the run game will dry up. I simply wanted to see more potency in the passing attack, and I'm not talking 35-46 and 400 yards. It's a win and I'll take it. It was by no means a pitiful performance. It was, however, underwhelming.

Here's hoping we see improvement next week. We can all drink to that, right?

I'd love to see Knighton go out as WR on series he's not at RB. He's too good to not be on the field and I'd rather have him out there than Pope.

Yes, I am pleased that we ran the ball well in our first game, especially after being one of the worst rushing offenses in the country last year. You are petrified by that improvement, and have constructed a boogeyman of “potential problems” to cast that fear upon. I am not the one who believes in magic lights and fantastic beasts.

You’re painted into a corner and are holding the brush, friend. Just admit it, get your feet a little wet and step on out. We are here for you.

You're on record for predicting problems. I think everyone accepts the possibility that we could struggle at times this year.

I think it's the constant hand-wringing that annoys some of us. Go to the game thread, and everyone's bytching. Come to the main board after the win, and everyone's crying.

Some of us live for this time of year, and when we win against a good opponent, we like to enjoy it for a little while and relish the good stuff that happened. Pretty sure everyone on here realizes the possibility that we could have some losses and bad performances. We've been losing for 20 years.

We can simultaneously enjoy a first game win where we were infinitely better than our final game of last year and hope to improve our performance as the year goes along without feeling the need to harp on an impending sense of doom. Everyone wants to get better as the year progresses. That's every football team's goal.
