Hurlie Brown

I would love to see a number of staff kept, but we all know that's not going to happen. Hurlie and Larry would get my vote if I could only vote for 2... As a matter of fact when we were closing with Mark Richt at the end of the OV my wife lobbied on both of their behalves. You can send Hurlie into the projects or the Suburbs and he will impress recruits and family members he has the gift of gab. Mike Barrow is who recruited Shaq, Mike and Zach... but it was Hurlie that held them together. I have to guess, but I bet he played a large role in Pat's decision. His are of the state is Northeast Florida... look how many he has been involved with in that area... How coached D. Owens brother at FIU, D. Owens was on his way to UGA... K Norton was on his way to UF... Shaq felt at home at UM because spending so much time on campus hanging out with D.O. he was apart of the team as a JR in HS...If D.O would have been at UGA... Shaq could have very easily assimilated up there.. and Nick would have more than likely followed those two... Larry is a great coach... he DEMANDs the best out of his kids. Going 4-1 should be his only needed testimony.. I can tell you guys.. that none of the staff is happy with winning 8 games... Hurlie was a National Champion they want to win every game and it kills them to lose... They have to be politically correct with talking with the media or to recruits.. How in the **** would it sound if they came out and said that we suck we only won 8 games had our *** handed to us by Clemson...come on man... I can't believe some here don't realize that... its common sense... If I were Richt most of the staff would be hand picked... but I would want some from the previous staff for transition purpose and some continuity.. We all shall find out here shortly... more than likely after the Bowl Game.

If you could pick 3 candidates to coach up your son at either the DC or LB positions who would they be? Obviously hoping for realistic candidates (aka not Ray Lewis).

The reason I ask is because I've read a lot about Kevin Sherrer being promoted to a DC role either here or UGA. He and Mike Ekeler were the LB coaches at UGA with Richt. Ekeler has some pretty good experience at Nebraska and USC before coming to UGA. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on these guys or anyone else you would love coaching up your son.
My First Choice - Randy Shannon
My Second Choice - Kirk Olivadotti. .
He was Richt ILB coach at UGA for two season currently the LB coach for the Redskins..The Redskins fired their entire Def Staff in 2013..everybody but Olivadotti. .. He is alumni of St Thomas and his dad coached in the league for over 20 years.
My Third Choice - Michael Barrow.. he doesnt get much favor from the players cause he pushes hard and no nonsense kinda guy with him the do it right or do it again and again and again...he was like that with the HS kids during a camp..Hurlie needs to move back to the DBs more specific Safeties. ..should be a Safety coach and a Corner coach
why would you wanna bring back randy Shannon if he had such a bad tenure here...I know he's a good coach that's not what I'm questioning but you don't think administration might have a problem with someone who apart of the investigation?

For the same reason I wanted Butch..he had an investigation going on at UNC...For the same reason that I'm ecstatic having Coach Richt at the helm after being fired for under achieveing.. I feel the guy is geniune, good at what he does and like ALL of us deserves another chance.

Not only that Shannon demonstrated he was an amazing recruiter AND coordinator. Yes he didn't know how to run a program, but that doesn't matter as a DC. We're not looking for a HC, we're looking for a DC, and Shannon has demonstrated he is one of the best for that role as he routinely produced top defenses even when the team struggled.

Yeah randy may not be the best head coach but he was great at coaching defense and can relate to a lot of players. If you see the difference in play of floridas line backers to where they have been the past couple of seasons it's a drastic difference. Randy got them boys playing man...

look up Colby reeder...kids from this year's class because it was added in May and he was playing safety last year

Offers from: Bucknell, Delaware, Fordham, Holy Cross, James Madison, Lafayette, Leigh, Miami, Monmouth, Old Dominion, Syracuse, Toledo, Villanova, William & Mary

Looks like Hurlie was right. JAG. Film screams OLB to me. That's where his only D1 offer (syracuse) likes him.

I am curious if any former head coach has come back to the same team at a lower position? There is always going to be a first. Though I am wondering if maybe Richt has some NFL coaches in mind and that is a reason why people have not been named yet?

I was never a fan of the elder Olividatti. His defenses at Miami always seemed lost. When Jimmy Johnson took over one of the first things he did was fire him. Hopefully his son is better than he was.

It's just my opinion - But I feel Richt already knows... He doesn't want to disturb what is going on already after the Bowl Game... Then the team is his... He knows time is of the essence.. the man is smart - moves are being made as we speak.

I am confident that he knows and has already talked to people. Just trying to figure out if it is not disturbing the current staff, not stepping on the toes of the futures staffs current employers, or what. I guess the other option is just evaluating the current staff to see if he wants to keep any of them. Probably some combination of all 3. My impatience makes me want to try and read into anything that might give a clue.

The reason why I was thinking maybe some NFL connections is because it seems in other staffs if it is a college guy they seem fine in announcing it. While I remember back with Monte Kiffin and the Bucs once his son slipped it out it destroyed the Bucs in their playoff run. It seemed like they were trying to keep it quiet but Lane just couldn't keep his mouth shut for a month. It is a very loose observation and probably nothing.

i like randy shannon as a DC. he did a good job but he hates recruiting. as far as richt underachieving. if Chubb doesnt break his leg they beat tenn. therefore, the are 10-2 on a team considered one of his weakest. 10 wins in SEC is not too bad lol Im just so excited that we are even talking about new faces on the staff. I think Scott and Hurlie are the ones imo. I also respect barrow because he fought with Coach D. same as hurlie did in the recruiting video. scott get alot of his players, needs to stop with the golden slogans lol

Getting to ten wins isn't a problem for him, it is not why he was fired. He won 2 conference titles in 15 years and was his main rival's *****. Wether expecting more by his fan base, donors and AD was realistic is debatable, but he had hit his plateau there in the first 5 years on the job and ten years later it was time to move on.

I don't know how people know which recruit they were talking about unless someone on the board has a source from that room.

If it is this kid Colby then yes every one in that room has to go that did not speak up. Brown was spot on. Looked like he was in a dream world wondering when he was going to wake up from this nightmare. Even Kehoe has to speak up and say what are you guys talking about? Now this was edited so we don't know the whole conversation. And they End with Al's Boy getting the last word and looking like an ***.

All the coaches in that room know that Coach D is Al's boy. And if that is how Al works then this would be a whole different side of the guy we have not seen. Now we all have to eat some crap at work but when it is time to have a say like Scott did and you just mouth what D wants to hear then that will be of no help to Richt. Don't know why everyone wants the guy. What does he bring to the table? \

As for Randy Shannon the guy is a Cane and can position coach. JJ saw it and put him on the coaching path. Don't want him as a DC. Would love to have him as LB coach again. You see former HC's as assistants flow through the NFL all the time. OU has a few.

Putting in serious work. He had a major role in landing Bethel, Quarterman, McCloud and Pinckney.

He is the one guy I'd like to keep from the defensive staff.

Wasn't he the only one in the recruiting video going head to head with D'No? WANT. Keep Hurlie.

I'm in the keep Hurlie camp! This kid was probably not UM material, the others should have seen it.

Few things to keep in mind:

D'No is the Defensive Coordinator. It's a fine line to disagreeing and disrespecting when discussing something. Hurlie did a great job with toeing that line IMHO.

Williams is most likely not sitting at the table because he brought the recruit to the meeting. He's already indicated he wants to offer the kid and is now turning it over to the group to make the decision on an offer. It makes him look bad in this video, he's most likely not a good coach, doesn't have the requisite personality type to be successful as a coach, and I definitely want to go. That said, have any of you ever submitted an idea to the board of directors at your company? Or perhaps served on the BOD? You make your presentation, state your case with your reasons, and then the board does exactly this. They discuss the merits of the proposal/idea and make a decision. Generally, the person who made the presentation sits quietly and only answers questions when asked of them. Many times they aren't in the room at all.

The vote ended up being five offers, four non-offers, and then they wanted a cutup of specific questions raised by Coach Brown.

D'No is actually right with many of the things he said, but he did come off as the smartest guy in the room type, and definitely tried to ridicule Coach Brown, who actually played the position they are talking about at a high level. To a certain degree a S does either have instincts and feel for the position, or they do not. You can teach him to get you lined up, call secondary checks, responsibilities etc. but the "feel" for understanding what the offense is trying to do, and having that panic feeling or seeing it and going are fairly intrinsic.

If it matters, Jaiquawn Jarrett ran a 4.62 at 198 pounds at the Combine. Benched 225 pounds 14 times, had a 30" vertical, and a 9'5" broad jump.

Reshad Jones ran a 4.51 at 214 pounds, benched 225 pounds 24 times, had a 39.5" vertical, and a 9'10" broad jump.

There just isn't a comparison as far as athleticism goes for the two. It's another illustration of how Coach D'No doesn't understand the athleticism needed to be a "dude" at the University of Miami.

I wonder how the 5-4 vote broke down:

YEA
1. MDO
2. Williams
3. Coley Montana
4. Scott
5. Ice?

NAY
1. Hurlie
2. Kehoe?
3. Melvin?
4. Beard?

great post. i mean look sean taylor was a high school rb primarly. at the same time Coach D had some valid points but lets be real, he always talks jaquan jarrett. Deon Bush will be a much better pro. this guy & williams are obsessed with Jaquan and wilkerson. Hurlie gets it. hope he stays.

Too often you get mis-quoted in the fourm... I said Coach Richt got fired (UGAs reason for letting him go) for under achievement.... I didn't say he did underachieve... I think the guy had a way better than average tenure... and he would have eventually won a NC... So don't twist my words.

i like randy shannon as a DC. he did a good job but he hates recruiting. as far as richt underachieving. if Chubb doesnt break his leg they beat tenn. therefore, the are 10-2 on a team considered one of his weakest.

Too often you get mis-quoted in the fourm... I said Coach Richt got fired (UGAs reason for letting him go) for under achievement.... I didn't say he did underachieve... I think the guy had a way better than average tenure... and he would have eventually won a NC... So don't twist my words.

And I agree it would be politically smart to disassociate yourself with the last coach... Scott would be wise to do that.. and even the coaches at UGA should not repeat what Richt had going at UGA.

Hopefully it was more him reaching the plateau of the school he was at and not his own personal plateau. We shall see either way.
