How Would You Fix the Team/Program Going Forward

1) Recruiting (we need to stack talent and have top ten classes moving forward)
2) Culture (it's been rotten for 18 years, and complacency and mediocrity have been the norm for a generation of rosters)
3) Staff (Gattis is gonna sink or swim. If he sinks, we need to shake up the O staff)

Other than that, there's no immediate solution. This is going to be a top to bottom rebuild. At least this season and next to establish a program that can consistently win 9 games a year and 3-4 years to being relevant nationally.

What blows me away is the need to remind people that this program has literally been an abortion since the 2005 season. Maybe even 2004 if you want to focus on those losses to North Carolina, Clemson and Virginia Tech.

Miami has averaged out at 7-5 every year if you go back to that 2005 Peach Bowl (118-85 record.)

I hear people saying that there's "no excuse" to lose to a Middle Tennessee, but based on what? Who the **** is Miami anymore?

80's, early 90's and early 00's era Canes—sure—zero excuse, but this program has been a shell of itself for almost 20 years. A middle of the road ACC team that has won the Coastal one and never won the conference. Losses to Duke. Fell to FIU a few years ago. Shutout by Louisiana Tech in a bowl game. Rolled by Bama, Clemson and North Carolina.

The fact our fan base is just some mind-blown that this below-average-for-15-years program could lose a game like this is a bigger shock than the actual loss itself.

That 7-5 team from last year could've easily have been 4-8. Same for 8-3 in 2020; could've been 3-8—TVD and King both with some miracle games the past two seasons.

The Miami Hurricanes are not a good football team and even worse, haven't been a competent or good football program in decades. To act like a loss like this is "lowering expectations" is hilarious. Some of y'all watch the 30 For 30 doc too often and act like them glory days weren't a lifetime ago.

Mario knew he had his work cut out for him when taking over this program. Unfortunately some of y'all are the ones in complete denial.

1. Change the offense to a more modern one
2. Bench the QB
3. Split time between focusing on recruitment, and giving these dudes some grueling workouts and sports psychologist sessions
4. Keep it real with everyone and their performance. They’re professionals. Gattis you need to do something radical here etc. If you’d te stubborn I will fire you.
5. Tons of outreach, getting creative with on staff roles for those with connections to those programs, outreach events and programs etc.

Sorry OP but nothing you stated is some quantum physics equation. It’s all relatively straightforward. What’s difficult is putting it in practice across the board, keeping ego out of it, having the drive necessary to uncesssingly have very hard conversations and making difficult decisions. That’s what is required.

This.

Most of the posts here offer solutions on how to fix the team. Teams come and go. The program itself is what needs to be fixed.

Are we asking about fixing the team for UNC or the Program for 2023+?

Team-
1. get healthy on offense.
2. personnel -
Defensive
DB - Porter over Ivey. TS2 has to play!
LB - Wesley over Flagg. Gil over Couch unless the O is in 10 with both Gil and Couch on the field. Chase over Steed with the O in 10/11 sets. I don't ever want to see us run dime personnel on the field when the O is in 12 personnel with a tight formation! See the 98 yarder AND WE STILL GAVE UP a TD! We had 6 DBs on the field all at the line except 24.
DL - We have to get more out of 6,56,90 and rotate 32,12,45 at the other end.

Offensive
Arroyo over Mallory.
If Nelson is healthy, move Campbell to G and 70 can sit.
Where is Cooper on the goal line? Heck, we didn't even play Mammarelli who I consider a much better blocker than Mallory and Arroyo.

Ironically, we are 4-0 if we score TDs on 50% of our redzone trips the last two weeks. YET, we didn't see Cooper at HBack, we didn't see Mammarelli. We targeted Mallory who dropped 3 TDs. We didn't target Arroyo. We didn't throw a single jump ball to a WR or TE to force a PI or get the safeties to second-guess run support. Do you want to solve our problem... fix the red zone issue!

As for the program, Gattis can stay or go based on him solving the red zone issue. I'm going to blame him for bad personnel choices and bad calls. On D, Steele can stay or go based on him solving the back-end of our D. 100% on Steele and his BS calls. They played conservatively against ATM to not give up big plays THEN reversed course against a team that had 3 kids faster than Ivey.

If the program is going to get back to winning, we have to get the kids that perform to stick around! TS2, we need him next year! Nelson, we need him next year! WE need to return every kid with a pulse and force them to fight to keep their spot vs more talented kids with less experience. Get those younger kids to push the older kids and gain experience on both sides. Do you think for a second we are 2-2 with Rambo? ONE KID! Injuries happen so having that one extra kid likely made all the difference yet he is sitting at home and we are 2-2. Figure that issue out and we are winning 10 every year.

I truly think that if you fix TVD, you'll fix the Canes.

How did nobody see TVD starring down receivers in practice or all spring long? Somebody should have caught that.

Can't change the offense mid flight but I'd scale down to some basic plays that TVD can run successfully and let him be a game manager while we run the ball until he finds his game.

Coach Mario has only been here for a very short time what I recommend is to please give him a chance to at least set his plan into motion.

Some here have only given Mario a couple games to put the whole University of Miami into the CFB playoffs by running the table and want him to do with EITH a LOSING organization and losing weak minded players.

In the coming years these same people will be on the same bandwagon they left .

21/2 tears for NC run .

Weak minded players? C'mon man. Some of these kids were champions and most of them came from winning programs.

To be honest; that don’t really mean anything. I can tell u unequivocally I got two little homies who went to SC & UO, respectively, coming from two So Cal Powerhouse programs. Both quit when faced w/ adversity b/c the game was real easy when u r facing a bunch of kids who will only have Al Bundy Stories & u’re on a stacked team v. playing against guys who are all striving to make it to the NFL & u have to earn ur keeps.

I don't disagree that good high school programs can produce flops, I'm saying that the kids that Mario has already have winning dna. Other winning schools wanted them too.

Mario’s first mistake was not firing every single person that the football program employed. Yes, all the way down to the janitor. It’s gotten that bad. He should have completely started over.

Everyone on here likes to act as if they have the answer to the myriad of problems this team currently faces. Amongst those issues are:

1. An anemic offense that fails to utilize proper spacing, is stubborn in its approach to run the ball even when the box is at a numbers disadvantage, and defecates all over itself in the red zone.

2. A quarterback that’s lost all confidence and seems to have rubbed his own teammates the wrong way, leading to a true QB controversy.

3. A roster full of guys who quite clearly play harder for others and quit when faced with the tiniest ounce of adversity, ready to point fingers or blame external factors for their poor play.

4. A coaching staff overall that is being paid like a top five staff, and yet is delivering inexplicably horrifying results.

5. A lack of loyalty from the area’s high school recruits and handlers, seemingly looking for an excuse to attend elsewhere (and honestly at this point, who could blame them?).

I could go on, but you get the point. Now with that being said, I’d love to hear from anyone regarding how they’d actually fix the issues - the immediate ones, and the long term outlook beyond 2022…instead of just yelling. I hate to be that guy, but we can’t give up this year when there’s still something to play for. Although Western Michigan is a solid G5 team, Pitt still found a way to lose to them after beating Tennessee in 2021, and yet still won an ACC Championship. We can at least get there, but that’s a different story and is going to take a massive internal change, and immediately.

Rattle off specifics. If you want Gattis fired, throw out some replacements. You want schematic changes for next weekend, name them. If you want players benched, go for it. Other coaches fired? Positions we need to attack in the portal? How many college ready guys do we need? How do we keep this recruiting class afloat?

Lot of questions, Lot of possible answers. I guess go on record for how you’d fix the short term and the long term, and we’ll see what actually ends up happening.

In all the bickering, we forget that every single of us do share one commonality: we all want Miami desperately relevant again.
I would just end the football program and save us all the anger and embarrassment of loving this team

Friend, compadre, Mi Amigo, Mon Ami:

What winning DNA? Seriously. The players that Mario have, counting from the class of 2018 - 21 (since that’s what the majority of the roster is composed of) was 28-21 entering this season.

Maybe it would be easier if u told me all the players that Mario inherited w/ this “winning DNA”, & why hasn’t that winning transpired to anything other than a 57% winning pct (or in the words in the infamous post from @ItsAUThing.com, an avg. of 7-5)

There are issues within this progra that I have full confidence CMC will address. One of those issues is recruiting. Mario is all about relationship building. I believe, with time, CMC will be able to reconnect UM with local hs coaches and fix this current dysfunctional relationship.

Another issue I don't think will last long is our issue of our soft culture. Our players play soft. I figured this year would be alot more of an adjustment on D because of our previous regime. A&M was a step forward but MTSU took us 3 steps back. Again, I believe once Mario has a few more years here, the days of us being out- physicaled by G5 teams will be a thing of the past.

Our offense, another major issue, will take a BIG FIX. You can't fire Gattis right now or we'll end up putting our entire fate in the hands of Frank Ponce, who will have DAYS to try to address issues and install his system. That's not possible. Instead, I'd have Ponce, as the passing game coordinator, address route combinations and work with TVD to draw up concepts he is comfortable with. At this point, to me, it's about creating a TVD-friendly offense we can succeed in (something I thought was happening in spring and summer camp). Our 'offense' would be run with a combination of offensive coaches instead of one OC making decisions.

As for Gattis, he's done at the end of the season. I'd start by seeking feedback (privately) from GAs, quality control staff, etc as to what exactly goes on in the WR room. I'd start sitting In on meetings and actually assessing just what Gattis is doing on a day-to-day business. All his recruits would have a secondary contact with UM. The writing would-be "on the wall" but hey, he won a briles this way so it might work out

You will see it after our 3 game win streak!! We will all see it! And joy will cometh again!😉

1. Bench anyone who was here under Richt and at least 2 years under Manny.

2. Revamp the entire roster via the portal.

3. Go all in on Kingsbury when the Cardinals fire him.

4. Bring Hankerson in as WR Coach and have him bring that Shanahan/McVay/McDaniel playbook with him.

I would add that our first National Championship was 39 years ago. Longer than many current Canes fans have been on the planet.

The current state of the program is reminiscent of the Canes prior to 1983. A good season here and there. An All-American here and there. But nothing close to a championship caliber program or team.

Our run lasted 19 years with a 10 year drought between natty’s. Our last championship was almost 22 years ago. To expect anything other than what we’re currently seeing is complete nonsense.
