Short term:
1) Mallory doesn't see the field again until he is routinely pancaking everybody in practice. One thing to have a horrible blocker at the end of the line, another thing when he sucks and shortens his routes at the goal line to catch passes 2 yards short of the end zone - and then doesn't even catch them. Arroyo should start and Skinner in on all 2TE sets, Skinner is obviously the most talented TE we have, put him on the field. Start using Rooster like Florida used Toney, jet sweeps and isolate him on the outside, let him make plays and stop running a lightweight RB up the middle to get beat up by 300lb defenders. If TVD MAKES THROWS and Gattis uses personnel to their strengths, nobody is on his case right now and we don't have 2 losses. He's scheming people open (Arroyo behind Mallory, Keyshawn been wide open a bunch) but TVD is horrid.
2) Ivey is never to be left alone in single man coverage the rest of his UM career. He's a willing tackler and his ball instincts aren't terrible, roll coverage and run cover2 if you have to, keep Ivey up by the line he will be an asset instead of a liability. Get Flagg out of there you look at the box score see 8 tackles and say he must have done allright, you watch the game film and he gives up 3 chunk plays and just happens to show up on piles when the statman assigns credit for tackles. Caleb should be given free reign to track the ball and make plays, Steele has to fix these issues and stop demanding his MLB make 80 decisions in 1 second when the ball is snapped. Flow to the ball, tackle ball carrier. This is a DC who is not playing to any of the players' strengths and you can't try to put a square peg in a round hole - ADAPT.
3) TVD has 2 weeks to prove he's a dog - are you going to go out there, lay an egg, and let Jake take your spot? Are you going to sit back and let that happen? Or are you going to work your tail off and fight for it and go out there against UNC and fire laserbeams and light them up? Which is it TVD?
Long term:
1) Recruit dogs only. If you are on this team you are here to give 100% effort, you want that playing time, you want that spotlight, you want to make plays. Period. Flagg "occupying blockers" when he had a clear sack and big play right there for the taking tells me he is not a dog. Send Barrow, Armstead, Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, any of those guys on a stunt and if they see a shred of daylight to get to the QB they punch it and make a play. Playmakers only. Yes be disciplined, yes do your job, but when you can step up and get the team going, you make that play. We had none of that vs A&M and none of that vs MTSU - not one player got in that huddle and said hey we are about to make a play, hey let's get this ball back for the offense, hey stop letting these midgets run by you on 4 verticals and burn you, have some pride out here.
2) You need stability. Nobody wants to come to a revolving door, Mario benching TVD took brass balls whether people want to admit it or not. Preseason darling with all-ACC and a smidge of Heisman hype and you yank him, knowing recruits are watching and knowing the media will kill you for it. Mario is sending a message - I will not trot you out there to ***** over this football team no matter how much seniority you have. So GOOD - ESTABLISH THAT. AND STICK WITH THAT. Let TVD know that if he ever starts another game like that he won't get a second chance. Let Jake know that QB is his for the taking if he wants that spot and earns it over the next 2 weeks. But don't go changing coaches based on 4 games, if these coaches need certain things (a rocket scientist MLB who can make 80 reads in an instant, or a pair of TEs who are basically 2 extra O-linemen) go get them. And then if they fail, after you gave them everything they said they needed, then you can them. But we have gone through so many coaches, staffs, schemes, etc over the past 15 years that the best thing anybody could do to promote long-term success is just lock in the coaches, make smart adjustments, and use the players you have even if it means tweaking your scheme.
3) We as fans have seen multiple runs at the top. We as fans don't accept bad football and what we hate even worse is uninspired low-effort horsecrap performances from a bunch of kids that we were told were 4* studs who just needed coaching to unlock their talent. No amount of coaching will take the place of EFFORT. And I don't see it on the field. Not from TVD, not from Flagg, not from our coaches who keep putting a square peg in a round hole and utilizing our players poorly. EVERYBODY needs to put in that work. All the UM greats did, and that's why they became great. You don't get that back by Mario barking about effort and hustle in practice, you get that by recruiting dogs who want to be in that weight room, who love that climb to the top, who want to step up and make plays when the team needs it, and who get personally ****ed off every time their team loses a game. We don't have those players. And until we get some of those dogs to get excited about, why do we want to go to a sorry stadium that's mostly empty and watch a team give half effort and by the looks of things during and after games, don't even care if they win or lose.
Butch Davis came in after Erickson and didn't have much to work with by old Miami standards (a lot more than what Mario has right now), but within 3 years that roster was stacked. I'm willing to be patient while we get some new blood in here and a team of dogs. But in the meantime, at least show us fans that you care. Yanking TVD for sucking was a good sign. Now keep Mallory off that field, don't let Ivey get torched on man deep routes, and if you are a player get out there against UNC and MAKE A FREAKING PLAY. STEP UP. And even if you get blown out by 40 give 100% when you do it. I could appreciate that.
Hard to appreciate what's on the field right now and that's why a lot of fans are justifiably ticked off.
