How Would You Fix the Team/Program Going Forward

I would be a lot more optimistic about potential changes if some of the most significant adjustments weren't needed from a person who engaged in a scheme debate with a fan on Twitter.

Just real life: Gattis had questions hanging over him about his scheme and, despite all the efforts to bag on our WRs and preemptively displace blame, he's only amplified the worries.

I'll hold out some hope because it doesn't feel like I have much of a real choice, but many of the concerns exist from the beginning. And, the first 3 (scrimmage against Bethune doesn't count) games have only validated concerns.

Lol Mark Bond turned out to be spot on in his analysis.

And I never understood the constant bashing of the WRs by the coaching to staff to the media. What good does that do? Seems like they were priming the excuse machine before the season even started.

1. For as much I’d like Gattis fired, it won’t happen during the season. At the very least remove him from calling plays and give it Ponce.
2. I’d start TVD against UNC but would have a quick pull trigger. He’s done this to himself.
3. Bench #8, #85, and #11. They have zero business starting. Play the young guys. Go youth and build.
4. Players coached up. Accountability for good, to great habits at practice, classroom and gameday. Show some desire and care for your school.
5. MC stop dodging the bullets now. You did this to yourself with the whole “how you do anything is how you do everything” BS. Well buddy, you ain’t doing ***** but only the same thing as those before you. Just did it faster!

Gattis isn’t getting fired until the season is over. I would be absolutely shocked if Mario fired people mid season.

This. Gattis is a big fail but no legit/big name OC worth anything would come next year knowing he will be canned 4 games into the season if they struggle.

Gattis knows his entire career is on the line here. I would think he is smart enough to make some adjustments with the bye week and try to turn this thing around, if nothing else to set him up for different job after the season. I actually did see some uptempo and RPO against MTSU so he's at least willing to adapt. I question if they team believes in him but they have no choice so it is what it is

The funny thing is that appeared to me like admission of prior guilt. He's trying the things most fans said we needed and should have been incorporated since the beginning. Problem for him is he now has a QB with the yips. And, WRs who aren't what he wants and reportedly feel like he's unnecessarily blamed them. And, injuries to RBs. And, no doubt a lingering tendency to lean on his prior beliefs. You reap what you sow...

Gattis has the thinnest skin and apparently an ego. He’s insecure and immature imo. He bashed both locksley and Michigan on the way out and he’ll probably do the same thing here

He neglects to mention how below average his offenses were before 2021, but that’s the only way he can take credit for 2021.

We have continuously said “I think he’s smart enough to realize”

And then nothing changes and we see that these guys are not smart enough to realize

I’ve personally struggled with point 3. At first, I gave Gattis some slack in the first half against MTSU. TVD missed 7-8+ throws, the game could have and should have been much closer. You can argue that Tyler didn’t look comfortable, but some guys were so wide open that any capable college QB should hit them in stride.

Things looked better with Garcia, but again…red zone playcalling was beyond abysmal. Spacing is atrocious. I started counting how many times we’d run into the teeth of a defense that had 8-9 guys stacked in the box…no matter how good your o line is, you can’t block everyone. It’s simply a numbers disadvantage.

Let’s say Gattis sinks, because I personally don’t have much faith in him. What do you do with Ponce? QBs have regressed considerably, and I’m sure that the new OC will want his guys in place. Make Ponce OC? I sure as **** hope not. Fire Ponce with Gattis and bring in someone that emphasizes spread concepts with a solid running attack when having an advantageous look in the box makes too much sense…but is that the direction Mario wants to go?
So the perfect OC lmao. Why doesn't everyone just do that.

It’s really not hard to find one. If the run game is going to be good regardless of who we have because Mario and Mirabal are behind the o line, then you just need someone to take care of the passing game…someone who wants to push the ball downfield.

USC is an easy example. Kansas, Syracuse, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Ohio State, OU, UW, etc. All have vertically threatening passing attacks, but actually run the ball way closer to 50/50 or more. There’s a ton of examples.

Not hard is a stretch I can't name the last OC we loved. Even Whipple ball the most vertical of all verticals was a disaster.

Assuming firing Mario isn't an option.

He has to adapt on offense and give up total control. Hire an elite OC and run a modern offense. You are going to struggle mightily to recruit elite skill position talent to this system. Too many better options for these kids.
This is the way.

This is the way.
Manny did the same thing after year 1 and it prolonged his runway two additional seasons. Mario is 10x the recruiter Manny is, but it's the stubborness that concerns me more than anything. He has no ties to Gattis and I think he'll be gone after this season (whether it's via firing, new job or whatever) but does Mario just promote Ponce and we are back on this horror ride again a year from now?

Start Garcia, start Arroyyo because I swear Mallory gets slower and slower by the week.
While defense start Caleb and less snaps for Flagg, start porter in place of Ivey, and play Tae over Blades

Manny almost did save his job by firing Enos and hiring Lashlee. Manny would have been back for a 4th season if Mario turned us down. The problem is that he refused to step away from the defense and that's what ultimately did him in. If Mario can step away from the offense, hire the right coordinators and just focus on recruiting and running the big picture aspects of the program he can still succeed here. But if he insists on forcing coordinators to run his plodding pistol/bleed the clock offense we're going to constantly be in death struggles with teams we are heavily favored against.

There are a range of problems that need to be addressed, but NOTHING is more important than changing the offensive system - and that means changing the offensive coordinator. Gattis was a bad mistake, just like Enos. It's like having a leaking insecure dam above a town but running around saying we really need to fix the potholes and sidewalks. Yeah, that's a bit exaggerated, but my worry is that if you do just enough to improve other things and start eeking out some wins, fans and everyone will revert to the excuse-making/defending of this abomination of an offensive system just like we heard before the season. A different QB inserted into a failed plan does not solve the fundamental issue.
