How have we never won the ACC?

As Saban himself said, if we had played ANY defense this year, we could have won the national championship. Fans knew going into the season we didn’t have talent on defense to be competitive in D1 football, let alone the ACC. How a coach making 8 million per year didn’t see that is baffling.

OL is bizarre - I expected it to be BC or someone like that. Really didn't expect it to be us even considering the 2000-2003 teams. At the same time, the most dominant program in the conference in the last decade+ only had 1 OL drafted from the teams that won 2 national championships - and he didn't even play any snaps on either of those teams. They won it twice without a single NFL player starting on the OL.
Defense, coaching and three good QB’s.

We entered New Year’s Day 1995 with a chance to win another natty with an abysmal OL.

If we hadn’t **** the bed against VT in 2003, had some better play calling and/or got one break somewhere, we beat Tennessee and play for the NC in 2003.

Defense, Defense, Defense…. If you have that, you’re never out of it.

We’ve had a couple decent defenses in the last 15 years, just not dominant enough to overcome our poor QB play the same years.

Bad coaching, bad culture and little to no support from the administration for a long time. Golden and Richt were some what good coaches, but Golden couldn’t fix the defense and Richt had health issues. Culture collapses under Coker and showed glimpses of righting the ship only to fire the coach and lose all progress. Finally, the admin never really cared about football from 1996-2022. Donna Shalala despised the swagger of Miami and wanted to have a more sophisticated team. She also never tried to renovate the Orange Bowl and worked behind the scenes to sell the land to the Miami Marlins. These things and a lot of local misses in recruiting will keep you at 7-5 for two decades.

We ran a 1994 offense until 2020.
How many teams have won NC’s since 1994 with traditional offenses?

I’d wager about half.

Not to mention, the 1989-1994 UM offensive scheme had little in common with Butch/Coker’s offense, which more resembled JJ’s than Erickson’s.

Defense and solid offense win games.

You could have wheeled Gary Steven’s into a booth last year and we still would have had the #1 offense.

What is a traditional offense? The wing T? The Wishbone? The T formation? Yeah nobody has won **** running those offenses in decades. Just like nobody wins **** running the Coker T offense in 2025. The only team in the last decade that’s won a championship with defense and a weak offense was Michigan who couldn’t win without cheating. Outside of their one cheating season, they’re an 8 win program

I’m trying to understand your original point.

You said we’ve run the same offense from 1994 to 2020. That’s absolutely false. Erickson, Butch, Fisch, Richt all ran different offenses.

What was so evolutionary about OSU’s 2002 offense?
2003/2007 LSU’s offense?
USC 2003/2004 offense?
Texas 2005?
Georgia 2021/2022?
Bama 2009/2011/2012/2015
Michigan 2023

Absolutely nothing, they were all Pro Style offenses with a few utilizing spread formations when necessary, just like Coker’s offense.

Michigans 2023 offense was even more archaic than their 1997 Pro Style offense NC.

So 15 of the last 24 NC’s have been won by essentially the same offensive formations/style with a few tweaks.

And Coker didn’t run a T Formation, he ran an I formation.
