How have we never won the ACC?

What if back in 2001 we hire like we had been. Going out and grabbing an up and comer or an NFL guy. Urban Meyer and Pete Carroll both started in 2001 I think.

Both probably get us the death penalty by like 2008. But they would likely be entertaining years.
One of the biggest mistakes was acquiescing to the players and hiring Coker. Those type of decisions never work out

Hate to say it but the hire we allegedly were at least considering was Jim Tressel...now THAT is a sliding doors moment if that came to fruition.

If we had hired Carroll (USC's 6th choice and known as Fredo in Patriots circles) or Meyer (never a head coach) we would have revolted.

This is my copy and pasted answer from a different DAILY DEBATE thread.

Quarterback.

Since 2004, we have started:
Kirby Freeman
Kyle Wright
Robert Marve
Jacory Harris
Stephen Morris
Brad Kaaya
Malik Rosier
N'Kosi Perry
Jarren Williams
D'Eriq King
Tyler Van Dyke
Jake Garcia
Jacurri Brown
Emory Williams
Cam Ward

2004-2023 average: 3031 yards, 58%, 22 TD, 13 int
2013-2023 average: 3228 yards, 59.6%, 24 TD, 11 int

We've had one QB (Kaaya) drafted since Dorsey in 2003.

I agree QB play has been a sour spot for years and obviously Clemson with Lawrence/Watson and FSU with Winston/Manuel did great with #1/first round QBs, BUT we now have had our own #1 drafted QB and didnt even make the game.

Since 2004 these are the QBs that won:

Vtech - Bryan Randall
FSU - Drew Weatherford
Wake - Reggie Ball (final score 9-6 over GT)
VT - Sean Glennon
VT - Tyrod Taylor
GT - Josh Nesbitt
VT - Tyrod Taylor
CLemson - Taj Boyd
FSU - EJ Manuel
FSU - Winston
FSU - Winston
Clemson - Watson
Clemson - Watson
Clemson - Kelly Bryant
Clemson - Lawrence
Clemson - Lawrence
Clemson - Lawrence
Pitt - Pickett
Clemson - Klubnick
FSU - Brock Glenn
Clemson - Klubnick

SO yes, good QB def helps but there is also a lot of trash on this list that would be comparable to the list you posted.

Maybe trash in terms of NFL prospects, but most of these guys were actually really solid - great college QBs and/or tremendous scheme fits (Nesbitt as an example).

With all the talk of culture change I’m hoping that the team comes together as a unit with unselfish “its all about me” attitudes.

I hear you.. but.. I mean.. we only had a shot BECAUSE we had a great QB.

We easily win the conference in 04 and 05 with just an average QB. We might even win it 2017 with someone like Kelly Bryant instead of Malik.

Look at it this way.
9 of the last 15 QBs to win the ACC went in the first round.
13 of the last 15 were 5* and/or 1st round picks.

Cam will be our 2nd QB drafted since Dorsey and our highest QB drafted since Erickson was the 20th pick in the 5th round in 1991.

Give me a great QB and we'll figure it out from there.

We had one thing that every other ACC program did not. A 2.5 year investigation where it was credible at points that we were getting the death penalty. That came in year 1 of Al Golden, whose greatest potential impact was talent acquisition - yet it put a damper on that. So not only were at least two years of recruiting affected, but not having those elite players impacted us for at least two years after the investigation. The longer Miami was mediocre, the greater the perception was that this wasn’t a temporary dip, but the new norm.

I can also mention the bad recruiting by Randy in 2009 and 2010, coupled with very heavy attrition after the 2011 season that led to our lowest blue chip ratio in the modern era.

Other factors include lack of investment by the school, and instability on top. From 2006 to 2019 we have five different head coaches. Five different regimes and philosophies. Each new coach hire brought a round of attrition.

As for programs that did win the ACC, VA Tech, Clemson, and FSU (until 2016) had consistency and no turnover for many years in the coaches. We were chaos.

2004 was our first year in the ACC, so 2005 would be the first draft to use.

1st RD picks 2005 - 2024:

Miami - 12
FSU - 20
Clemson - 20

Still no excuse to have never won the ACC, but paints a different picture than the original post
Agreed. Average to lousy QB play (until Cam) and average to lousy coaching will hamstring anyone. Still more than enough talent overall to have more than just 1 ACC Champ game appearance in that time period.

Now show which one of those draft picks are perennial pro bowl house hold name types. No matter how many you send to the league it’s not about quantity its about quality. The Miami of old had quality and house hold names
