Honest question - do we really have better talent???

I think we have different players today than we did in the 1980's. In the 80's and 90's the players were edgy, they weren't recruited higher than FSU most years but they were hungry to prove that the recruiting services, which were weak at the time, underrated them, and it was true. We had players who weren't afraid to get in an opponent's face and back any talk up completely. They didn't think they were better because of the uniform they wore but who they were as men. Those guys were warriors. They weren't thugs but they worked harder than any team in America regardless of the facilities they worked in, which just happened to be some of the poorest funded in the country. But they mostly came from the poorest funded high school in the country and they said F that, we are better and they just refused to lose for like a decade. These players today are not like them. They abide by the 20 hour a week rule while our players in the 1980's and 90's probably spent twice that amount of time preparing for games. They did so because first, they wanted to be the top dog, and once they attained that status, they refused to let anyone else out work or hustle them. And yes, they got lucky a few times (wide left or wide right) but they were awesome men of character.

We now have players who protect themselves from playing in a bowl game because they might drop from the 5th round to the 6th round of the NFL draft, who admit to "going through the motions" in a bowl game over trying to win the **** thing, and who don't care whether we beat FIU, Duke and La Tech. The last player I have watched who you could tell it mattered to him whether his team won or loss, more than life itself, was Duke Johnson. I know he isn't popular and he made more than his share of mistakes, but Randy Shannon only tried to recruit players who were champions on the high school level. He knew champions have something within themselves that is different than other players. Jarren Williams' team in high school was like 5-5. He got used to losing in high school and so he doesn't have the refuse to lose attitude. So he plays a game "going through the motions". That isn't the type of player we recruited in the 1980's and 90's.
Great post.

Using recruiting rankings is one way to evaluate talent, but blanket statements that say we have more on paper is meaningless.

How does that talent on paper stack up? What's the overall age and experience versus our opponents? Matchup experience and age, etc? What about unit vs unit? I don't have the time to breakdown team versus team, but there's a lot that could go into comparing talent against talent is all I'm saying.

We're more talented though than our record showed. What's talent though if not used properly? Talent goes out the window in that case.

I don't disagree with the importance of coaching. You're 100% correct that it starts and ends with coaching. Especially since CFB basically combines the front office and coaching roles. And UF's improvement under Mullen is a great example of what good coaching can do. However, I'm not convinced that even if you took that exact Mullen staff and gave them the current Canes roster, that you'd get 10 wins. But that's mostly just because I'm not convinced these kids actually give a **** about winning.

And the UF kids that won 4 games - suddenly just started caring more the next season in order to win 10? WTF.

What sense does that make? Mullen won 10/11 games in the SEC... laugh out loud at the thought of him not winning 10 games with our schedule.

Perhaps this has been asked, but do GA Tech, FIU and LA Tech have better talent than us? That should be the question which will help identify our weak link.

There is a galaxy between some of the top 12 ranked teams - and Clemson. We have the talent to be ranked in the top 12, win the Division, and still get whipped by Clemson. Because only Bama, OSU, and LSU are on their level. Think Utah/Baylor here.
We got shut out 14-0 by LaTech and lost to FIU, Duke, and GT.

Utah and Baylor would kick our *** if we played tomorrow.

Of course we do. But we stockpile blue chips at certain positions and miss at others which hinders us. And also horrid corching

Coaching matters! Our player development has been has been lacking for many years now. There always will be the handful of guys that are self motivated and can make it themselves. But for the majority of the team something is amiss.

Bingo. Back in the day, kids would come to miami, work their tails off, improve, and be grown men when they left. Nowadays, I think most come here thinking, "Let me do just enough to get into the league and then ball out when I get there. To **** with the program and winning." When highly rated recruits go to Bama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU , etc. they leave looking bigger, stronger, faster, and smarter entering the NFL. Our kids leave the program looking no better than the day they started. It's sad, really. I think a lot of us were angry at Haselwood for saying the things he did, about how he felt losing was OKAY with many on our team, but boy oh boy was he right. Lastly the bag game has gotten way out of hand in college football. Everybody KNOWS the programs guilty of this but nothing is being done about it. Eventually, it will get to the point where it will be the same 4-6 teams in the playoff..year, after year, after year.

its very simple

I can go to homedepot and buy the most expensive tools on the market.

But if I don’t know when/how to use to a hammer, a wrench or drill. Then those tool are useless.

Look at LSU for over a decade they got talented offensive players who never put up any numbers. Heck OBj and Jarvis Landry did squat there relative to their talent level.

But they bring in a guy who knows how to design an offense and all of a sudden Joe Burrow who was a JAG a year ago, is now all of a sudden a Heisman winner.

So yes Miami has the “talent” to wipe the floor with the trash teams we play but we don’t have the guy who knows how to use them to get results.

Great first 48

I don’t have any sauces or anything like that, but yesterday I was lucky enough to play golf with one of our coaches from a championship team, he was just a defensive assistant, but he followed the head coach to another program. He said the talent his there, with the exception of inconsistent QB room. He told me the problem was coaching discipline. He still attends a few practices a year and his word were” Free for all’ do what the players want

I neither said our recruits are overrated nor everybody else's were pretty accurate. I said it is hard to tell the difference between underachievers vs overrated players because our coaching staff does not appear capable of getting the best out of players.
If our staff is incapable (and they sure seem to be), then it doesn't matter. However good our guys are, they could all be better with better coaching. No point in worrying about getting better talent until you've got coaches who will do something with it.

I know our coaching has sucked for past 15+ years but even with bad coaching wouldn’t we be able to overcome our past losses based on sheer talent. To me our players just dont seem to be self motivated and really don’t care about losing. Just because you are from So FL doesn’t mean you are a better than others.
I know good coaching would bring out the best in our players- but should they have the inner will be neat the fack out of FIU OR DUKE.
why do people like Feliciano and Linder go to the NFL and get better? Look at Dorsett as well starter for a Super Bowl winner last year

Talent is there...coaching has been pathetic since 2002

Talent is relative. Does Miami have talent to win the Coastal? Yes. Does it have the necessary talent to win the SEC or B10? Hmm, that's a quick and hard no.

The issue at UM is a few. One, you have kids coached poorly at a young age as most on the team come from South Florida and the development is **** poor. Two, being that as it may, you then need extremely good coaches that can teach and Miami doesn't have - you get what you pay for in Life. Three, there's an entitlement problem at Miami that appears to be permeating, evolving now for many years which multiple HC's can't eradicate. It's cancerous voiding any advantage Miami brings to the playing field, hence being on Par or below Par with the likes of Duke, GT, an FIU, Central Michigan and a LaTech.

Its criminal how many of these players over the past decade and more have been so misused and poorly coached.

Fortunately, many NFL scouts are able to see beyond the ****** coating our coaches apply to these kids exterior and it's a testament to many of them that they are able maintain strong work ethics and positive attitudes.

It's UNBELIEVABLE that we continuously hire such poor coaches.

If a Department Dean had a record of continually hiring poor Professors that were stunting students growth he would have been run off of campus years ago

Ask yourself why 3 florida schools can by and large recruit the same players but they all get different on-field results.
We all have entirely different kids on our rosters. Different coaches. Different opponents. No idea why you would expect the same results.
