Here Is How Miami Can Redshirt All True Freshmen in 2020 - Offense

OP has it all wrong.

Since the season is a wash anyways, redshirt all available upperclassmen and play every freshman.

2021 will be the most experienced team ever.

I am down with this.

QB - none
RB - Harris
WR - Harley, Wiggins, Pope
TE - Jordan, Mallory
OL - Donaldson, Scaife
DL - Ford, Silvera
LB - none
DB - Carter, Blades, Ivey, Hall

Yes, certainly they are both talented enough. But unless we expect them both to rush for 1k yards the next 3 seasons, it's unlikely they would enter the NFL Draft the same year.

Lendale White and Reggie Bush did it, but it's not likely with Miami moving to a spread as there won't be enough touches to go around.

Knighton moving to a pass-catching role could set him apart. And they should both get a look in the return game.
In HUNH, there are more plays run not less.

Good Morning my friend

Whether it be poor performance or seniority Mandy does not bench players especially upperclassmen

Ivey was the most horrible player on defense and continued to START

Miller is our BEST DT but Nesta Silvera will continue to START despite no impact on passing or running downs

Mike Harly vs Vatech was the worst performance by a Canes WR probably in past decade and continued to get major burn during that same game and beyond
There's some truth to the notion that if a player doesn't know what to do, even if he's got the goods, you cannot play him. TC and C-Will were not ready last year, really neither was Ivey for that matter but CMD went with Ivey's experience.

Miller/Ford/Nesta will split snaps this year and allow HH/Holley to compete for the 4th DT spot.

Harley knew the Webster's Dictionary aka Dan Enos' playbook......we will not have that problem with Lashlee's playbook (Lashlee always talks about adjusting the playbook to his players abilities, Enos never spoke of it and followed thru on gamedays)....so I say that to say this, if Harley doesn't perform he absolutely will watch one of the underclassmen take his PT away because kids like Restrepo-KSmith-Redding are COMING (I think Worsham redshirts this year)

More plays is good for everyone. But unless these two split carries and both average 6.0 ypc while hurdling and stiff-arming defenders into bolivian, there's a low likelihood of them each entering the draft 3 years from now. It simply doesn't work that way.

One of them is bound to out-perform the other, or get injured, or transfer, or what have you. So you might as well consider redshirting one (Chaney most likely since he's coming off shoulder surgery and played in a wing-T).

The 2020 offseason has been lost. If it hasn't been completely lost just yet, it will hit home when player/staff interaction and practice time continues getting scaled back in the wake of the virus.

Forget about the incoming freshmen playing big-time college ball in September - it just wouldn't be fair. The first month there will need to be heavy reliance on the veterans while the freshmen find their footing.

With that said, here is how we can redshirt every true freshman on offense while allowing each of them to play in 4 games.

First, the depth chart of veterans:

QB
King SR
Perry JR
Matocha FR

RB
Harris JR
Burns JR
Parrott JR

WR
Harley SR
Wiggins JR
Pope JR
Few JR
Martell JR
Payton FR

TE
Jordan JR
Mallory JR
Hodges FR

OL
Williams SR*
Donaldson SR
Gaynor JR
Herbert JR
Hillery JR
Scaife JR
Campbell SO
Reed SO
Traore SO
Nelson SO
Clark SO
ElGammal FR

Redshirts:

QB
Van Dyke - (plays in the 2nd half against Wagner, UAB, 2 other games)

RB
Chaney & Knighton - allow each to split the final 8 games between them. They could each play every other week for the final 8 games. Knighton one week, Chaney the following. If one of them gets hot, they get to play in the postseason.

WR
Restrepo, Worsham, Redding, Smith each play in 4 of the final 8 games. Their time would be staggered so Restrepo & Redding play while Smith & Worsham do not, and vice versa the other 4 games.

TE
Mamarelli plays in the 2nd half of Wagner, UAB, 2 other games.

OL
Rivers, Walker, Washington each see limited snaps over the course of the final 8 games when appropriate.

I like it.

Let the true freshmen play late in the 4 OOC games, then tighten the rotation and let the upperclassmen take the 8 ACC games by themselves.

Only burn redshirts if we have A TON of injuries.

It's out of fairness to everyone. It's already asking a lot for a true freshman to execute an important role early during their first season. But these kids won't even be allowed in a meeting room when they arrive at school, on top of the practice time already forfeited.

Might as well take advantage of the new redshirt rules and allow them to develop. It's a pretty veteran roster as it is, so this wouldn't be a huge deviation from the plan for 2020 before the virus. The only true freshmen who were guaranteed to play a large role before the virus were likely Knighton, one or two WRs, and one or two DBs.

Play your best players........period.

Normally, yes. But it's near impossible to be one of the best players with almost no time to prepare and develop. The freshmen will be so far behind by the time an abbreviated training camp begins that this will be accepted as more than mere nonsense.

OK, slight revision then, play the vets in our 4 OOC games, run up the score, try to crack the Top 25, let all the "man, Enos/Stroud/Stubblefield buried me" guys get 4 games of easy burn...

****, any kid that you THINK might be thinking of transferring, play him in at least 5 games.

And then sprinkle in the true freshmen over the next 8-9 ACC games, while still keeping their redshirts clean...

There is no way we are redshirting Chaney and Knighton so long as they're healthy. You get 3 years with backs these days, must take advantage.

So the consensus around here is that Knighton and Chaney are both gone after three seasons? Interesting.

If guys are going to be on campus working out in June how is the off season a complete loss when the season starts in September,

This is a developmental program, and it's always best to RS every freshman. Once we get this thing rolling in the right direction, we can rely mainly on 5th year senior starters and 4th year junior backups at just about every position.

Absolutely correct sir.

The Paterno mold of redshirting every true freshman can work again with the new rules. I'll concede that certain kids like Knighton and maybe one or two others are so good at football that losing an entire semester won't keep them from being able to contribute. But for the most part, these kids will be entering camp out of shape and without having practiced/trained a scintilla with their teammates, which is unheard of entering a season.

These kids aren't just gonna up and start tackling one another when they arrive next month. It's gonna be a gradual return to normal operations, and by then it will be far too late for the incoming freshmen to do anything except tread water.

Unlikely but possible. Let’s assume that Lashlee bumps the offense up to 80 plays a game. Roughly half those plays will be runs (or more). There’s going to be at least one season where both backs will be able to get between 15-20 carries a game.

It's Miami, we have kids leave early to go Rounds 5-7 or be UDFA.
