Very, very young team that became better each week. Plus they had a brand new DC and once they believed in him they started to play well(Portland state was a HUGE lesson). WSU has 76 freshman and sophomores on this team(many redshirting, as many that came off redshirts or are RS sophomores). The previous staff was so bad it took Leach 4 years to purge it. The are only 2 seniors on this team that are left from the last staff, all were either tossed of the team or quit(yep it was that awful).
If they played Portland State again it would be ugly and if Falk had played VS Washington would have been a different story as he is as legit of a QB as there is. You are not the All PAC 12 QB if you stink. Their win in the last seconds vs Rutgers was the catalyst for the season and the win against Oregon on OT took it to a new level. I am season ticket holder and they absolutely beat the living crap out of Stanford, knocked 4 or 5 kids out of the game. WSU is much more physical than you think. Mcaffery had 107 total yards in the game(no receptions and zero punt and kick return yards) He had 87 yards rushing with 4 min left in the game. Plus WSU had 2 times as many 1st downs and over 150 more yards, just a heartbreaking loss.
If Luke Falk plays VS Washington completely different ballgame.
Offense
QB Falk(cleared to play and practiced yesterday). He is legit, does not make bad decisions, is an absolute student of the game and will put WSU in the best position to get yards on ever play. 1st team PAC 12 usually means you can play.
RB: 3 play Wicks, big 6 0 225 and was big time sprinter in HS in Cali, he is really fast. Harrington, small and total jitterbug not blazing fast but hard to hit has hands like a receiver. Morrow, same as Harrington but bigger, might have the best hands on the team. WSU can run the ball when they want, as they all average about 6 yards per carry. Pass catching is where they hurt, the three have almost 2000 yards from scrimmage both rushing and receiving.
WR: Tons of them sometimes 11 will play. They are in and out all the time and will gas DB's as one is always fresh.
OL: Big, leach loves big lineman, but kids that can really run, have to in his offense. LT should be back for the game missed the last 4 weeks and he was still announced as a 2nd team All American yesterday, he will be drafted.
Special Teams
Punter: true frosh getting better
K: darn good only missed about 3 or 4 all year.
PR: Smart, would put team in a bad position, but won't run it back.
KR: Frosh from Miami actually from Dwyer HS. Kid is freak, has almost taken a few back but he is a frosh and well makes mistakes like a frosh.
Defense: One of the top tackles for loss teams in the country, since the are all about pressure. Almost 9 per game. Struggle with running QB's no idea why. If it a drop back passer, they have just tee off on them.
DL: All samonas as the DL coach is a Samoan Legend who played in the NFL for 9 years and they just flock to him. Big kids that can run basically.
MLB: both kids who start are solid, both really smart one will be in law school next year.
OLB only play 1 since WSU uses a nickel due to the pass happy PAC 12.
DB: Biggest surprise of the year. The new DC from Mizzou is the DB coach and has done a 180 with this crew. Only one new starter, but is a stud JC All American who showed up in August.
This was a season that no one expected after that pile of crap WSU laid on Labor day weekend and it has been a **** of a ride. They are a good team, they were 8 points from winning the PAC 12 north title.
They give up yards on defense, but they don't give up the big play and for some reason once teams hit the red zone it was like a switch was flipped and they were hard to get TD's on. Obscure state of the week, WSU was the only team in the nation this season that did not give up a pass play over 40 yards.
The team is a reflection of their coach and his F'u attitude. They shut their mouths, have subscribed to his idea of play one game a week, and play the next play. You can see they love the guy and will do anything for him. I have met Leach a few times and really is an interesting cat. Would talk to you about anything not related to football for hours.
This could be a wild game and should be fun. If the weather sucks as EL Paso can pull it off, advantage WSU. Pullman is at the foot of the Idaho Rockies, about 3000 feet an the team has been practicing in just dog **** cold rain and snow weather since about OCT 20th.
For those going to the game, WSU fans are crazy fun oh my lord. There is nothing to do in Pullman but drink booze and The Cougs will go hard as anyone you have ever seen.
