"Whenever Butch Davis comes up in conversation, fans point to his record as evidence of a great coach. However, that same great coach was despised by the same fanbase for that same record. Davis averaged nine wins per season in a conference in which there were 3-5 guaranteed wins per year. The Big East of the late 90s was one of the worst conferences in the country, with an impressive top end. Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Miami were the class of the league, with schools like Temple, Rutgers and Pitt being uncompetitive. Miami usually crushed the bottom feeders, then struggled to beat teams with a pulse. Davis' record against Florida State, Syracuse and Virginia Tech was a combined 6-12, with three of those wins coming in the 2000 season. Davis' struggles weren't limited to the big teams, the 'Canes were inconsistent across the board. A perfect example would be the 31-6 beating East Carolina laid on the 'Canes at the Orange Bowl. Butch Davis only had one "awful" season, going 5-6 in 1997. That season was the result of years of heavy sanctions, so that can't be blamed on Davis. However, Miami fans have to look at Davis' overall record and realize that his record is a pleasant mirage. His teams beat the teams they were supposed to, and usually lost when faced with teams with equal or superior talent. In most cases, those games were ugly routs. Some of that can be attributed to the 'Canes not having depth, thanks to the NCAA mandated scholarship restrictions, but that isn't the only cause. Butch Davis' teams were usually horribly coached and disorganized, there's a reason why Davis was referred to as "Botch" by the same group that is now pushing for his return. "
Horribly coached and disorganized? How many of those "horrible" coaches went on to be NFL coaches? Usually lost to teams with equal talent? Did you miss when we beat the defending national champs and eventual Heisman winner (unlike beating them for a half like Al Golden)? Did you miss the entire 2000 season?

DGFE, you is a lying son of a BlTch

Butch Davis always had his supporters... even when things did not look so bright. Now unlike what is seen below, who has supported the guy with whom you spend your time in his sack?

October 5, 1997|By CHRIS PERKINS Staff Writer

TALLAHASSEE — A group of 35 University of Miami fans, led by CaneSport publisher Gary Ferman, had a banner flown over Doak Campbell Stadium in the second quarter that read, ``UM fans say Go Canes! Go Butch!''

``Butch,'' of course, is UM coach Butch Davis.

CaneSport is a magazine devoted to UM athletics.

In the third quarter, another banner flew overhead with the official UM logo that read, ``UM Engineering Loves Butch Davis.''

Both banners were in response to one flown negatively over the Orange Bowl last week during the West Virginia game that read, ``From National Champs to National Chumps . . . Thanks Butch!''

Mike Clement, father of UM quarterback Ryan Clement, was among the 35 UM fans who donated $10 apiece to finance the CaneSport venture.

Ferman said the banner was a way for UM fans to show their support for Davis.

``There was a universal feeling the banner that was flown over the Orange Bowl last Saturday was very tasteless and non-indicative of the support Butch has of the core group of fans of the program,'' Ferman said. ``People felt there wasn't a better chance or time to show that than [Saturday), when they come into the game 22-point underdogs and the stadium is stacked against them.''

[Did anybody flew a banner praising Al Golden during this past year in response of so many bannerS flown for his demise? Where were you DGFE?]

Ferman said negotiations for the banner were delicate. Only one company in Tallahassee flies banners over Doak Campbell Stadium. After getting in touch with that company and negotiating a price, the issue became when to fly the banner and how many times.

Ferman wanted to fly the banner by the stadium four or five times before the opening kickoff while the company wanted to do it once in the fourth quarter.

The banner went around the stadium about four times in the second quarter.

UM changes starting lineup

A mountain of evidence suggested UM's starting lineup would undergo at least five changes, but Davis only announced two during the week.

When the starters took the field for the Hurricanes there were five changes.

Davis announced left tackle Robert Sampson would start for Yacub Abdul-Matin, who missed too many classes during the week.

Davis also announced right cornerback Nate Brooks would start for Nick Ward.

During the week, all signs pointed to Jeff Popovich starting at strong safety for Dennis Scott, Robert Hall starting at defensive tackle for Damione Lewis and Magic Benton starting at receiver for Daryl Jones.

Lewis was hobbled by a sprained right ankle injured during last week's West Virginia game.

Popovich practiced with the first team all week and Scott with the second team but Davis said that didn't necessarily mean Popovich would start.

Benton, a returning starter, said during the week he would start and coaches admitted he was moving back up the depth chart but no one would confirm Benton would start.

Ward doesn't play

Ward, a starter for UM's first four games, didn't play. Ward, a sophomore from Dallas, said he was told Friday he probably wouldn't play.

Ward had a bad game against West Virginia _ he said he had the flu _ but he seems to be taking his demotion in stride.

``I just have to work my way back up, just start practicing hard,'' he said. ``When I regain my health I'll be back.''

Defensive line changes

UM made a few moves in the defensive line to help get some speed on the outside and put pressure on FSU quarterback Thad Busby. Among the most prominent moves was moving end Denny Fortney inside at tackle and sliding Hall out to end.

Fortney was a two-year starter at defensive tackle.

UM also played a lot of defensive linemen. Aside from the starters _ Fortney, Hall, Derrick Ham and Chad Pegues _ Lewis, Matt Sweeney, Quincy Hipps, Adrian Wilson, Clint Hurtt, J.C. McGann and Brian Stinson played.

The 'Canes also used a different blitz package, one in which Defensive Lineman Fortney dropped into coverage. It wasn't a zone blitz. . . . UM had minus-17 yards rushing in the first half. . . . The 'Canes only had 10 men on the field for FSU's 45-yard field goal late in the second quarter. Dennis Scott ran off the field. [****, UM shut these fochers down in that first half]

You're lying dude, Davis was never called "Botch"; U JST making ish up, JUST LIKE YOUR "being uncompetitive". Just go back in Golden's sack, and keep slurping where you belong!

Al, you have a brand new CanesInsight account. How wonderful you are. Love your clever name, "CaneGangForEver". Hopefully no one will notice your join date, or your totally awesome 15 posts. Give those Butch Davis folks some ****. After all, it's not your fault that the guy actually took an NFL job, and you were a bit short of the Penn State gig. With any luck, you'll get that gig, and spite those that don't want to give you that lifetime extension.

Ok, so we're reduced to name calling with anyone offering a different view. I'll give Butch his due - great eye for talent and player development. But was never more than an average game-day coach. And know it's counter to those clinging to a nostalgic return, but very unlikely to happen.

Ucla, Ohio state, fsu, sugar bowl, etc.

For every game people like to use saying he is average, there are two more otherwise that you could use.

look at the coaching staffs he assembled here too

And I'm sorry, but winning the ship as UM DC and as Cowboys DC means you're pretty good w coaching at least one side of the ball.

As much as some of y'all claim to love Butch, you would think you would know his history.

He was NEVER DC at Miami. He coached DL ... The same job he had when he left UM to coach the Cowboys with JJ.

You're full of siht. Butch WAS the Defensive Coordinator at the Cowboys, and won a SuperBowl ring with JJ. He stayed behind when JJ left, and won another Super Bowl ring as Defensive Coordinator.

At UM, he went 51-20, despite losing 31 scholarships - and in 2000 - got cheated out of a chance to play in the NC game - WHICH DIRECTLY LED to the new system of Quality Wins in calculating who played for the NC. The entire nation knew Butch and Crew got cheated.

So go replicate with yourself. Sideways.

Butch was DL coach for the Cowboys title in 92. Promoted to DC after Wannstedt left to Chicago.
DC for Cowboys 93 title and 94 season under Barry.
Also, no longer being paid by UNC. January 15 was his past payment. He's free to go anywhere.

Your "love" for Butch is comical!

LOL

Again ... Stop responding to what you think you are reading, and read what is written.

Butch was the DL coach at Miami ... He was NEVER DC. He then went to Dallas with Jimmy Johnson ... As the DL coach. Wannstedt was the original DC for Jimmy in Dallas, just like he was DC at Miami. Butch was promoted after Wanstedt left Dallas for Chicago.

Why can't some of yall "Butch lovers" read?!?

LOL

Dude ... You are a "fountain of misinformation" about Butch Davis. LOL

He NEVER won a Super Bowl after Jimmy Johnson left. He won his 2 titles WITH Jimmy ... Back-to-back, as DL coach and then as DC after Wannstedt left for Chicago. He wasn't the DC when Switzer won his title in 1995 ... Butch was at the University of Miami when that happened. Again, you would think you "Butch lovers" would actually know his history.

Golden will be our coach until 2020 get over it!

Only 2020? What will we do after that? He needs, and deserves another contract extension. I can almost here the negative recruiting, "Young fella, I know he's the greatest coach in college football, but he'll only be there till 2020. Boy, I sure wish he went to Penn State so we ACC coaches would have a chance."

This. Butch did build the best team in NCAA history. Would have beat Oklahoma in 2000 but got screwed over after beating FSU that year. If Butch would have stayed he would have won a couple of more. Notice when Butch's players were gone the team started losing. Butch also put together a great coaching staff. Notice were all the assistants went. Several went on to be head coaches in the NFL.
