GOAT RB - Vilma tweet

Barry Sanders is the greatest RB to ever play the game. He would've rushed for nearly 2k every season behind the Cowboys line.

If you built a time machine. You could send Barry back to when Jim Brown played and he would've put up Oklahoma State numbers. Versus the defenses and players of that time.

"Sanders is believed to have had the most negative rushing yards in history at minus-1,114 (on 336 carries). Take those out and he averaged 6.0 yards per run over his career."

Bo Jackson would be right there with Barry. Had he stuck with just playing football and never got hurt.

Both guys would dominate any era of the game.

Emmitt Smith is a Croc, so he automatically gets bumped down a few spots on the all-time list. That’s just how it works.

Pretty sure all the older dudes would say Jim Brown is the GOAT.

I'm one of those older dudes. I watched Jim Brown growing up and saw him play live once in Cleveland Stadium against the Eagles. He ran for something like 235 yards that day. He retired at the peak of his career and had a great YPC average. He's my #1. But there have been a number of other great running backs, too. It's a good discussion.

If Frank Gore had 2 good knees, he'd probably be high up on these lists.

With 2 repaired knees, he has how many yards now? Almost 15,000? Absolutely incredible.

A healthy Gore at Miami would be my #1 pick out of Miami RBs for sure. And we've had plenty of good ones.

I'd agree OJ is probably on this list. I tend to be with Vilma that there's 2 or 3 that are definitely top 2-3 and then after that there's 10 guys who you can debate.

That top 5 mostly mirrors mine, and it's the one most pro football experts would throw out there as the top group:

Jim Brown
Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
O.J. Simpson*
Erik ****erson

* assuming you don't take points away for committing double homicide

Here’s the problem. It’s like some of these RBs weren’t even playing the same position. Can you really compare Barry Sanders to Earl Campbell? It’s like they were playing two completely different RB positions when you like at how they played.

It’s almost as if you need to break it down into different categories for the different styles, types of offenses, etc.

Just look at two Rams RBs, ****erson and Faulk. Both were great, but how can you even compare the two?

Allegedly

This isn't quite true.

Jimbo Covert was an all-pro more than a couple years. And Hilgenburg was an all-pro many years, too. And he's been a nominee for the HOF.

Not sure about the rest.
Covert’s first all pro year was 1985. Hilgenberg’s first year was 1986. Payton’s last real season was 1986. (He split carries in ‘87, so I was a year off on his retirement.) So same point. Walter played substantially his whole career behind a line with no all pros anywhere.

Emmitt Smith is not the GOAT, no.

Definitely a Top 10 RB, Gator hatred aside. Possibly Top 5.

1.) Jim Brown
2.) Barry Sanders
3.) Walter Payton
4.) Earl Campbell
5.) Eric ****erson
6.) Emmitt Smith
7.) John Riggins
8.) Marshall Faulk
9.) Marion Motley
10.) Bronco Nagurski

Honorable Mention: Larry Csonka.

No Sayers?
Not many RB's in the League averaged 5 ypc for their careers.
Somehow quality over quantity has to be figured in.

Didn't Brown criticize Harris for his (wimpy) running style?

"If I see a running back step out of bounds when he could've lowered the shoulder and gained more yards, thats the sign of a weak man. A Runningback like that doesn't interest me."

- Jim Brown

The term is dated and overused, but Jim Brown was a Boss. With a capital 'B'.

Portis ain't gettin' in, no. Was a way better college RB than a pro. Not knocking him, he had a good NFL career.

Edge should've been in by now.

If Portis stayed in Denver he'd probably have a legit shot. He is something like #31 in all-time rushing yards, which is nothing to be scoffed at.

On a side note...That Jacket in your avatar is fire!

  1. Thanks and I know.
  2. I have three of them :p

My first one was an Xmas present when I was in fifth grade (same style but black). I ended up giving that one to a friend/fellow alum as a surprise because it would actually fit her. Also have a pretty good collection of Starter hats, but lost a TON from when I was a kid.

I saw Barry Sanders up close. I had a friend on the looping team and I was on the 50 yard line. Best running back I've seen in my lifetime. If Barry had played for Dallas back when Emitt was there, Barry would hold every rushing statistic possible. Although, those old enough to see Jim Brown would say JB is the GOAT. I think you have to look at eras. Who was the best during their time. You can't compare across eras. It's just not fare.

I think based on the totality of the responses, we might have reached the extremely rare occasion of all of CIS agreeing on something.

If you put Barry on Emmitt's Cowboys teams, he'd put up records that would never be sniffed.

Too many good ones to name a goat. each one has they're own running style.but it's be very interesting if they were all available for the upcoming draft .which one gets picked first.

Interesting notion. I used to do all-time mock drafts with friends for fun. Basically go through drafting a roster, and at the end everyone votes on best pick, but you can't vote for own.

Barry had something unreal like 3300 APY his last year at OSU. Hard to think anyone is getting drafted over that production.

Barry Sanders is the Greatest Of All Time! As John Madden stated: " He makes/made moves on moves!" After him I would place Gale Sayers (had it not been for his injuries, he would have been the greatest of all time!), and then Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Sweetness, and Orenthal James Simpson. And then, I would add Tony (TD) Dorsett and Emmitt Smith

I think we all are ****ed enough that we have to put a **** in the Top 10 of anything, sans Douchebaggery. xD
