I will say that fan data statistic is definitely not based on attendance. Here is a quote on it, “Change in the number of people who claimed each team as their favorite college team among people who watched or attended college football games as of Jan. 2023.” Based on a survey of 6330 people.

For reference we had a 2% gain in fans. Seems to be more in social media usage, and given their struggles, large fanbase, loud & brash. That seems to be where the decline is.
