Right before they got crushed by UGA (and Beck), they were 13-0 and must've thought that Norvell had built a machine to last for decades. Prison Mike really did hit it just right and caught lightning in a bottle:
  • To his credit, he struck gold in the portal before the other players caught on. As much as we make fun of him, I do tip my cap for that. He mitigated his weakness (Recruiting and development) and found a huge opportunity in the portal.
This bullet point was Norvell's MO at Memphis. He flooded his roster with grad transfers and JUCOs and piggy-backed off the success of his predecessor (Fuentes?). Anyone who paid attention to his time at Memphis knew Norvell wasn't going to work out at FSU.

You're right though he got lucky with his hit rate especially the QB who bailed them out routinely until he lost his leg (we saw how bad that offense was both in the ACCCG despite winning and the UGA game).

Serious question: what does Norvell need to do to save his job outside of making it into the playoffs this year? Assuming a playoff run would save him, but he doesn't make it, how many games saves his job?

I think it depends on who's available to hire as HC. This past year had an unusually high number of mid-high level jobs get filled, so the amount of attractive HC candidates is definitely gonna be lower this year.

I think if he wins 8, assuming there's a lot of competition for only a few quality HC candidates, he probably keeps his job and they punt one more year and get that buy out down further. I think if he wins 7 or fewer, they take a swing at a coordinator from a major program or maybe Manny or Deion.

I think he is pretty much done, I'd be surprised if he survives until after week 3.

They open the season against New Mexico State (assuming a W), then vs SMU and then @ Alabama: 1-2 will get him fired, a stunning week 1 loss will get him fired, even an ugly week 2 loss will probably get him fired.

I don't think he will have a chance to coach 8 games, let alone win them. At least Napier had the Lagway hype as a life safer, Norvell ain't got nothing.
