FSU is broke

Will they have the money to buy out Norvell and also pay the buyout for a big time coaching hire?
No Way What GIF

Right before they got crushed by UGA (and Beck), they were 13-0 and must've thought that Norvell had built a machine to last for decades. Prison Mike really did hit it just right and caught lightning in a bottle:
  • To his credit, he struck gold in the portal before the other players caught on. As much as we make fun of him, I do tip my cap for that. He mitigated his weakness (Recruiting and development) and found a huge opportunity in the portal.
  • He had a (for FSU) generational QB who was not only a playmaker, but was also very twitchy so he could mask not the greatest OL for FSU. BTW, elite QB's aren't everything, but they really do make the difference.
    • As an example, Dabo did a great job in multiple areas when he had his run, but the true difference maker was having 2 great QB's in a row, then a good QB, who he then replaced with the best QB he ever had (Sunshine). Then, although he's had two 5 star QB's in a row, neither of them panned out like the other QB's and low and behold, the game has "passed him by".
  • The Noles were so desperate to regain the Jameis "He actually is a rapist...that's real, BTW" Winston years, that when they had those two 10 win seasons, they thought they were entering a new golden age.
  • But, instead of a new golden age, it was all a giant hallucination. Jordan Travis and the timing of the Portal's emergence was the perfect storm, and now they truly are a damaged and destroyed program as a result.
  • I'm pretty sure the answer for FSU is not Manny, it's Deion. With his branding, recruiting prowess, history with the program, etc., he could bring them back sooner rather than later. His excitement could get their donors to put in new money. But, since they're caught in a cycle of mismanagement like we were in for years, they'll probably hire Manny... or hire Lane after the Tigah's fire him in 3 years.

When our coaches recruit kids evenly remotely considering FSU, our coaches should pull out a nice lamented copy of a spreadsheet showing how dead broke they are as a program. That aside from bathroom fixtures there will be little money going towards their development. Give them a piece of Chuck Amato medicine.

dude, what recruiting prowess for Deion- are you paying attention?

BTW, Seaton was a 5 star, he got him. Cormani was a 5 star and the top CB, he got him, he convinced Travis Hunter (5 star and top rated player in the country) to go to an HBCU school and then follow him to Colorado. He beat us out for a top WR that we really wanted and got him to go to that HBCU school.

But, I guess besides all of that, he can't recruit.

Deion has had some serious health issues. Would he be willing to undertake the FSU job?
That's a program that will need some serious work.
Also, seeing that it is a state school with big alumna base, I am surprised at the level of poverty.
So much for being an SECish school.

Deion has been a great hire for Colorado if you are a reality show type of guy but on the football field? More bad than good imho and his health is a question mark to say the least. It wouldn't be the homerun hire you think it is for them.

dude he got one or two big guys since he got to Colorado. That's it- money of course. One is gone now

yes i am paying attention, sorry you're wrong. I'm not trying to be a ****, but facts matter. He has been widely criticized for his recruiting- he hasn't put in the work, expects talent to just come visit him and kiss the ring.

for 2026 class, Colorado was 60th overall in recruiting, 12th in the BIG 12

In 2025, when he got those two whales (Seaton and the QB), it was still just 35th overall while they were in the middle of the highest hype. rose to second in big 12

In 2024, 65th overall, year one, 15th in big 12.

Do you want to use the, hey Colorado, not the SEC, fine, that still doesn't explain being 12th in the Big 12 with that brand name and notoriety he has if he's a good recruiter.

He wasn't even positioned when he lost two big players to not collapse his team after three years of recruiting and the portal. I'm not saying that those two guys weren't massive but good programs don't collapse after losing two guys like that - sure a step back maybe- there's plenty of examples of those that do not.

But no, I'm not paying attention

Oh, I don't have any delusions regarding Deion and I am a Cane through and through and love seeing them suffer after their fanbase showed who they are the last few years. But, as a CFB fan and a member of the ACC, FSU getting better would make that W look better. And, I do think that Deion is gettable as opposed to other coaches who might be able to come in and rescue them.

Manny or Deion are there only realistic choices for resurrection at the moment and a few annual Canes vs Noles clashes with Deion talking trash as he takes on Mario, would definitely bring eyeballs and increase our own branding.
