Franklin Fired at PSU

VA Tech would be the perfect landing spot for James Franklin.

Their AD should already have his contract drafted.

Franklin should immediately jump to the top of Virginia Tech’s list

Would (almost) instantly upgrade their talent level. I say almost because year 1 is usually a throwaway.

Depends on money.

I hope he doesn't go there, or to any direct competitor program.

Early list according to PSU site for 247:

  • Matt Rhule, Nebraska
  • Curt Cignetti, Indiana
  • Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri
  • Manny Diaz, Duke 😆
  • Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State
  • Ryan Silverfield, Memphis
  • Will Stein, Oregon OC
  • Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills OC
  • Urban Meyer, FOX Sports 🐍
Joe Brady would be great but I think he would prefer an NFL HC job vs having to deal with recruiting.

I know absolutely nothing about the AD at PSU. But there’s gotta be close to a non zero % chance they didn’t get something lined up before this decision. I get getting ahead of some other schools, but this just screams they already have their guy. It also shows they probably saw what happened with UF and Napier. Napier did enough to save his job, and now he’s probably going to get canned a year later than he should.

If the plan was to can Franklin to end the year, say they catch lightning in a bottle and win out. Go 10-3. Yea not what they hoped for but you will have a much more difficult time firing him.

I doubt they hire Cig. Just not a smart move imo. IN seems willing to spend. He’s also having real success. Why leave? Rhule is their Mario. It almost makes too much sense.

You give the people involved in these types of decision too much credit in my opinion. I doubt they had anybody lined up. More likely the boosters and other power brokers funneling money into the program started threatening to pull out.

Yeah, his low-key demeanor seems much better suited for the NFL than college
I would say, as I look into further, Matt Campbell and he brings Rocco with him for his senior year and they go and have a killer year at Penn State to kick it off.

This is always an underrated part of this. I am sure he has some sort of offset language and the buyout doesn't get paid all at once. I wouldn't be shocked if there is offset language if he takes a TV gig too.

It makes the most sense to fire him now so Penn State can spend the rest of the season passing the hat to boosters and Franklin can maybe go get himself a new job if he wants it.
PSU wouldn’t need to cough up the entire amount now. Reports are that Franklin’s contract runs through 2031, $8 mil per year ...hardly a deal breaker especially with the BIG TV contract monies they’re getting.
