Fox Sports: Why Al Golden Is All But Fired

This is exactly the time warp too many message board posters operate under.

Butch last coached in 2010 ... That was 5 years ago!

And who cares about him being the same age as Nick Saban? Saban is an all-time college great, by every standard. The only people who think that way about Butch are Miami fans ...

And all the old guys on this board keep thinking an out of work HC is the only guy that should be considered ...

The sooner the fan base leaves the late 90s, the more legitimate our gripes will be. But it's easy to dismiss the fan's perspective when the vocal ones are clamoring for a guy past his prime to replace the current guy.

He's the equivalent of what Phil Jackson is for the NY Knicks right now ... A legend with an awesome history, but the legend of what he did has no impact on the current situation.

I'm watching The U, 2 right now ... Butch came to Miami 20 years ago. He left, it's over. Let it go!

Butch is 63. Not exactly in his grave yet. Same exact age as Saban. Butch was kicking our *** just a couple of years ago with UNC.

Lulz, so u think he forgot everything he knows in 5 yrs? Do you not remember he was directly responsible for recruiting all of our championship teams but the first? Do u not remember he took us through the darkest time and REAL sanctions and was directly responsible for 3 straight titles, if not for being cheated by computers and a OSU graduate referee?? Not even Saban has accomplished that homie.

Butch was DL coach when he was at Miami with Jimmy. Some of yall dudes give him far too much credit.

I'd be happy with Butch as a recruiting coordinator, doesn't even have to be HC.

He ain't going for that s**t. I guarantee it. I've been in convo with his son via email.

He want's to be the HC here again and redeem himself in the eyes of the haters. He doesn't want to come and make someone else great.

That dl was possibly the best ever in college football. He also assembled the best team ever. Brad is the only player on this current team that might have started during butchs tenure. Dorsey was a great college qb.. not one other player offense or defense.

Recruiting coordinator is a title ... The HC runs recruiting. Lol

Brennan Carroll was our recruiting coordinator under Golden and at USC ... Anybody think he really ran the recruiting??

This is bordering on comical. Butch got beat by Randy Shannon 33-10 in his 4th season at UNC. That's a destruction!

And it wasn't just about his suspended players. By year 4, the amazing Butch had no business getting waxed by Shannon. By year 4, where was the team depth, based on his wizardry at evaluating and developing talent?

Robert Quinn was a beast, but what makes people think Marvin Austin and Greg Little were so special and completely irreplaceable during that season?

But beyond that ... Shannon's team that finished the year 7-5 beats Butch by 23?!?

This Butch mythology needs to settle down.

Is he an upgrade on Golden? Yes.

Is he the ONLY upgrade available? No.

Is he the best upgrade available? Doubtful.

So, why don't we just hire Dave Wannstedt? Technically, Butch worked for him at Miami and at Dallas. He's got Super Bowl and National title rings, and he's the same age as Nick Saban, too. Plus he coached with Jimmy Johnson, and Jimmy selected him over Butch to run his D!

I'd, at least, give the "Bring Back Butch" crowd props for consistency if yall were mentioning Wannstedt, too.

But most of yall are holding onto "lightning in a bottle" from 15 years ago.

... And yall might as well resign yourselves to the likelihood Butch won't be the next HC. So, yall may just want to stick with watching games from 1999-2001, or find another squad to support ...

Obviously if I said I'd have him as a recruiting coordinator that would mean that HE would be the main guy to evaluate talent and have huge input on who gets offers. (not just some BS title like Carroll's)

Say what you want about Butch, that dude is one of the best talent evaluators in the country.

What I was implying is that it would be nice to get him in the door and have him be influential in our recruiting, even if he couldn't be HC.

Stop sweetheart. You sound desperate.

Nah ... But the poster with the "Butch Davis is a God" signature might be.

What kind of grown man pines for another grown man he has no actual relationship with?

And the idea that you trade emails with his son might indicate your obsession with Butch has reached a level you may want to re-evaluate.

People probably don't bring up Wannstedt because he was a failure at Pitt and was forced out. Meanwhile, Butch Davis had assembled the greatest collection of talent in the history of the sport here. We were the top program in the country when he left, so far ahead of everyone else that we were able to win a championship with Larry f'n Coker as our coach.
