Facility upgrades

TOC in your opinion, knowing how ****** the locker rooms are, how quickly can something like that get done? I feel like FSU threw these new lockers they have in over a **** weekend. To me that’s our weakest link right now they are dreadful compared to everyone else at this point.

That part of the Hecht is crusty AF. So pretty much 6 stories is the tallest the city is going to allow now right based on the master plan or whatever?

Demolishing everything west of the Schwartz probably necessary but what a mess while it's happening. Can't wait to see the drawings.

Yeah, we are OK to go to 5 or 6 stories. No residents across the street from Hecht.

I would expect temp relocations of offices and/or modular buildings during construction, comparable to what we had when we tore down the old CSR to build the new Wellness Center.

If putting $5 - $10 million into a temporary locker room for 2 years doesn't tell you how things have changed, the fact that they want to dump the new $35 million IPF surely should. Let someone else use it. I still have to check myself, is this real?

Dump the IPF. Good Lord man what are you drinking?

Well, they are already raising the money, so I don't think it will take long. After all, this was Beta Blake's dreeeeeaam project if he had unlimited funds...

But seriously, it shouldn't take all that long. If I were going to bet money, I would think that it's something that could happen after the Spring Game and before the August practices start. Purely a guess, but it's the right timing and seems to fit the timeline of how things have been pitched to alums/boosters.

In an ideal world, you would figure out a way to house all the direct sports jobs (coaches) in various spots. Hoops coaches in the Watsco, baseball coaches in that building down the right field line of the Light, tennis at the Schiff. For the record, that might be what already exists, but the goal is to "only" displace the admin people to new digs during construction - academic support, ticket office, marketing, etc. (plus all the new-new hires in areas like nutrition and recovery).

Then you nuke the "old" Hecht over the summer and start construction. Work on the foundation during hurricane season, and then start the heavy construction in October/November.

Again, I have no special insight into Dan's plans, but that kind of a plan would cause minimal disruptions and have maximum impact. Shoot for a grand opening in August 2023. Not sure if that's too aggressive, but I'd think this is one building that should be fast-tracked, as the construction would impact traffic on San Amaro.

Frenk and his people better be putting this kind of effort into the academic buildings as well. I love what Rad and Mario are doing, but Frenk and his people haven't done anything for infrastructure for the rest of the student body in a while. Building new dorms is flashy, but the Cox Science Building is still a dark, dank dump with the same broken restrooms that were there when I was in undergrad back in 2009.

We should be building hardcore across the board, Rad is leading the charge and I hope the powers that be are heeding the call for all.

Stop whining. The Cox building is the same exact building that it was in the 1980s. Crappy.

A new science building is definitely in the latest master plan.

The building that definitely needs to be replaced (and rebuilt taller) is Memorial.

I’m glad they’re either going to renovate or rebuild the science building.

I'm really lost on what some of y'all think is goin on. Y'all post like we still got our old locker room... We have a decent locker room right now that was built in like 16 or 17 if I remember right. It's not ****** at all. It's just basic.

Agree. I took a tour before they opened in about that time frame (2016/2017) and they are pretty nice. Not the flashiest or most expensive, but they are not 20+ year old ancient lockers.

Man that locker room was built in like 2011-2013 not 16 or 17 and yes it’s sh*tty and outdated, I kid You not most group of 5 teams have better looking locker rooms than Miami, not even speak on power 5 schools like that because that goes without saying. I know What I’m talking about here because I’ve had several former teammates play power 5 ball(like 7-8 different schools), group of 5 ball etc plus just looking at different facilities videos

Yeah, I think people get confused because of Beta Blake and his priorities (and I was being sarcastic because of that infamous meeting he had with Dan Lambert, where Dan asked Blake what he would spend the money on, if money was no object, and Beta Blake told him "a couple of analysts and locker room improvements").

But, yes, the locker rooms were improved in 2013 with money from Dwayne and Dany:

So I think that people have the wrong idea on "how bad" and "how critical" the locker room improvements are, in the grand scheme of things. Could they be better? Sure. Are they the "one thing holding our program back"? **** no, regardless of what Beta Blake implied.

Are improvements coming? Sure. Should we film a video an "Extreme Makeover" player reaction video for the unveiling? Who knows, I'm not in charge of that. But we shouldn't act like the LOCKER ROOMS are still the same ones we had in the 1980s. But the "old" Hecht IS from the 1970s. That's a fact.

EDIT: Sorry, @Brooklyndee , I know you know the deal in those last 2 paragraphs, those were really intended for @brock and anyone else who believed Beta Blake and his spending priorities.

Talking about building a complex for those sports in general with pool upgrades.

Yeah, I have no problems with building something new/better for track, just not sure where it would go on-campus besides Mahoney-Pearson/WestLab area.

Would be a helluva lot easier for John Ruiz to move WestLab rather than Coral Gables High.

It was unveiled in 2013

But regardless it’s old an outdated, several big time programs have had multiple locker room upgrades since 2013 while Miami hasn’t had not even 1. We got to get out of that mindset of the bare minimum is fine because it’s not in todays age especially when it comes to stuff like this no matter if people don’t think it matters or not. In todays age it certainly does which is why you see the top programs at the pinnacle of football who are elite on the field continuously trying to improve their facilities/locker rooms because it does matter

Brock, simple question. Have you actually been to the UM campus? I'm just asking, because I was in President's 100 for nearly 4 years, we were the group that wore the white polo shirts (now orange) and led the campus tours every Monday, in addition to hosting prospective students (now outlawed) and appearing in all the UM promo videos that you saw during halftime of football games.

Those locker rooms were opened in late 2013 (thanks for correcting my typo, but it wasn't "2011-2013" as you claimed), and I'm sure that @Brooklyndee has actually been inside them far more frequently than you have been.

Can you tell us how locker rooms that are not even 9 years old are "****ty and outdated"?

Now, you have assured us that you "know What I'm talking about here" because you were "former teammates" with guys who play P5 football and you've been "just looking at different facilities videos". But what I'm missing here is whether you actually played P5 football or whether you've actually been inside of UM's locker rooms. Both of which questions @Brooklyndee can answer in the affirmative.

Look, I cannot profess to having a library of "different facilities videos", so I'm just gonna have to trust you on that. But I do know that our locker rooms are not as bad as what you or Beta Blake would lead us to believe.

I'm happy for any and all improvements to facilities that UM makes during the celebration of our 100-year anniversary. But I would appreciate it if you would refrain from calling our 8.5-year-old Rock-funded locker rooms "****ty and outdated".

Thank you.

Again, I will renew my question on whether you have ever been to UM, and add the additional question of what gives you the level of expertise to critique locker rooms around the country (besides your obvious qualification of "video-watching").

And I'm sure you have an Excel spreadsheet of names and dates and expenditures for all of these "several big time programs" that have had "multiple locker room upgrades since 2013". Because you are a very factual, detail-oriented guy, and I'm sure you would never say "multiple locker room upgrades since 2013" because you just pulled that out of your ******, I know you have an exhaustive Excel timeline of the "multiple" locker room upgrades that have taken place across the country over the past decade.

To be clear, I am not arguing against these improvements, I am merely pointing out that the locker rooms are not as bad as you describe. Furthermore, I don't even think you have the personal knowledge to make such a claim, and I tend to trust a former player and frequent visitor (at this point, I am referring to @Brooklyndee , but I could also add guys like @SWFLHurricane and @Canesfreak and other people who visit the UM campus far more regularly than you do).

You're a decent guy with lots of posts and lots of reactions, but you should stay out of this conversation, unless you have visited the UM campus recently, of which I'm unaware. You still haven't answered my question of whether you have ever been to the UM campus, let alone walked through the Hecht and/or IPF.

No I didn’t play power 5 football, i was recruited out of highschool a little bit group of 5 mainly but chose the academic route in college since I wasnt Being recruited by my school Miami obviously. But like I’ve said, I’ve had former teammates play at like 4-5 different sec schools and multiple acc schools too. I’m just saying what I’ve seen and no i haven’t been to see um facilities in person obviously but I’ve seen videos of them and seen others. Just trust me they outdated lol. Not just saying that for shock value lol

I watch Facilities improvements around the country closely

and no hard feelings on my end, I respect you. Everyone entitled to their own opinion but I’m just saying the big time programs have reworked their Locker rooms multiple times since 2013, uga, lsu , bama etc… even a poor program like fsu has had 2 locker room upgrades since that year in addition to uf

UM doesn’t have a stadium. Therefore the other facilities have to have a WOW factor at all times to counter the negativity from rival coaches in how they recruit UM. Those locker rooms are absolute garbage compared to others and look 20 years old already compared to the style being used everywhere now.

Nobody disagrees with this on a basic level.

Go back and pull any posts I've made over the years on the subject of Blake James. I consistently told people that Blake James was a terrible AD with no vision. Even when I had to deal with "But the IPF, tho, bro" bros, I still didn't buy Beta Blake's fake-smile-bullsh!te.

The point is, Dan is here now, and we have finally brought someone back from the Sam Jankovich AD-tree. And Tad Foote is no longer ****-blocking the Athletic Department. So there is hope.

But you'll forgive me, a bit, if I prioritize REPLACING A 50-YEAR OLD HECHT over improving an 8.5 year old locker room. I'm NOT saying that BOTH are not important, just that the "locker rooms" should never have been the first-and-only capital improvement that Beta Blake could rattle off when he was being offered a blank-check hypothetical.

I hope that makes sense. You've got @brock here saying "trust me" (and I'm not mad at Brock, I'm just saying he hasn't seen the full picture in person), but I would ask people to "trust me" (or @Brooklyndee or @SWFLHurricane or @Canesfreak ). There is a lot of work that needs to be done, and the locker rooms are not soooooo bad that we are losing recruits or contracting black mold. The locker rooms will be improved. They should be improved. But we ALSO need to build "capital improvements" into our annual budget, instead of making it an "every 5 or 10 years or whenever we have a big fundraiser" kind of a thing.
