Facility upgrades

Yeah, initial "construction/dedication" of the track was in the 1980s, but as I mentioned, it's very probable the track was resurfaced later in the 1990s. Plus, the interior of the track (the "field" part of Track & Field) looks a bit different from what I remember as a student.

The track isn't elaborate, it's very similar to what we first had in the 80s, but I'm sure that there have been some tweaks/improvements over time.

I'm sure you know about this and can back me up, but our facilities were HORRIBLE just a few years earlier in the 80s. Jim Martz describes the (literal) shacks that we had in the early 80s in his first book about UM football. A lot of the bad blood that JJ and Jankovich built up with Tad Foote had to do with wanting to spend our "national championship jackpot" money on improving the facilities. I'm sure that JJ and Sam wanted higher salaries too, but their first priority was facility improvements.
It was resurfacing that @Rellyrell was alluding to....And trust me...the conditions of the facilities were atrocious in the 80s...I was just talking about this very subject with Tony Fitzpatrick the other night.

In regards to the IM fields…UM has invested several million dollars over the past few years completely redoing the irrigation system and sod, extending their footprint by getting rid of the parking lot along San Amaro, and building a new multi-story fieldhouse to replace the smaller, older one. I know we’ve heard money is no object anymore time and time again, but I’m not sure if the school wants to dump its investment here so soon.

:100:

Man, I could compile a list of dirty, filthy buildings on the UM campus in the mid-80s. My freshman year, I worked for the UM Housing Office, and we had a lift truck that we used to deliver and/or switch out furniture, refrigerators, stoves, etc. in the Apartments area (none of those 3-story buildings had elevators).

I was shocked at how squalid the "married student housing" was, both along ****inson Drive and across US-1. I was somewhat relieved when UM decided to get rid of that housing. I mean, it was tough for students who had young kids, but UM should have never allowed young kids to be raised in those sub-standard buildings. UM was like a slumlord in those days.

The basement of Mahoney-Pearson. The backsides of the Student Union (both by the Stanford Circle and the Miller Circle). The Ibis and the Eye and the Hurricane cafeterias. The art shacks. The OLD Lambda Chi house. The OLD Sig Ep house. The Army Armory building. The ramshackle Law School quadrangle, pre-renovation. The Ungar Building. THE ENGINEERING SCHOOL (particularly the nasty basement/ground floor). The Learning Center, complete with their anonymous NYSOM-friendly restrooms.

And, of course, the granddaddy of them all, the Hecht Athletic Center.
I lived in Apartment buildings 23 and 45…..🤢🤮.

I think they're going to completely redesign the campus, and we won't be locked into existing footprints. Things should get interesting...

For the “Facilities Don’t Matter, Bro” crowd, what u’re forced to do is step into the 21st century of collegiate athletics. I’m pretty sure our facilities will be a multiplex, primarily for football, but student athlete friendly.

Again I’ll repeat; while some were pushing for Sleezy Tom, logical fans/alum was pushing for Rad. Highly successful AD w/ hardware to match, that’s an alum?! C’mon.

Lotta chit will be changing around here; u’re talking about a HC that was apart of our glory years, then exposed to a modern day football factory in Bama, & coached at FacilityU at UO + an AD who worked at the 2nd known Football Factory over the past 8 yrs, that’s also known for facilities. What did u think was going to happen? Our brand will be restored, after yrs of tainting from **** poor coaches + suck *** ADs.

Man, I can’t wait. We been suffering way too long.
Talk to em!!!

Am I the only one thinks all this stuff is MUCH less important than paying big NIL bags? Obviously, do it all if.yoi can but.is there really THAT much money behind the program now?
I hate that we have to spend on this sh*t, but it’s got to be done. Yeah, a 10 year old locker room will house your smelly jersey just as well as a 10 month old locker room, but this is about expectations. And the expectation is that if you’re not first, you’re last.

That picture from Robby Espin looks like a conversion of the current weight room into a training table. My guess is that if they do not build something on Cobb stadium, the other option is to move the Volleyball facility somewhere else, convert the Knight court into a big weight room and completely rebuild the Hecht (which could be 150,000 sq ft. plus over three floors) to create a big new spaces for the team.

Yeah, I've tried to explain to people, the various parts of the complex were built at different times. Some are worse than others.

The "main" part of old Hehct is the primary building on the left as you walk up. Old. Terrible. Needs to go. People who think "oh, they'll just build on the Track" (because they look at Google Maps) have no idea how badly the old Hecht needs to be replaced.

The Hall of Fame piece (to the right side of "old" Hecht) was just an add-on building and is newer. It could be moved if necessary. It could become the ground floor of "new" Hecht if you put a 6-story building inside the footprint of "old" Hecht.

The Knight Sports Complex (behind the Hall of Fame piece) is (largely) our original basketball practice facility starting in the 1980s before we had the Watsco. Not sure if it is now "volleyball" or whatever, but it might be possible to move the functionality and use of that building over to Watsco.

Go on Google Maps. The darker and dirtier the roof is, the older the building (generally).

You could demolish EVERYTHING west of the Schwartz Center, if you relocate the gym and you relocate the Hall of Fame.

The words "****e" and "hole" are too kind for the "old" Hecht building.

That part of the Hecht is crusty AF. So pretty much 6 stories is the tallest the city is going to allow now right based on the master plan or whatever?

Demolishing everything west of the Schwartz probably necessary but what a mess while it's happening. Can't wait to see the drawings.

If putting $5 - $10 million into a temporary locker room for 2 years doesn't tell you how things have changed, the fact that they want to dump the new $35 million IPF surely should. Let someone else use it. I still have to check myself, is this real?

We are not, repeat NOT, "dumping the IPF". We are expanding it southward onto Greentree.

Yeah, the current quote (8-figure amount) is for the initial changes to the locker rooms, weight room, IPF, etc. But the big money (9-figure amount) will drop old-Hecht and replace it with new-Hecht.

I've been talking with a few posters, and if the whole "100-year anniversary" campaign works its way to the stated target, we are trying to raise 9-figures for Athletics, not an 8-figure number.

I hate to say this, but the old-Hecht was a craphole in the mid-80s. Not sure why the Miami Beach building inspectors haven't come in and deemed it unsafe for occupancy.
Heard that. Crooked #s 💰💰💰
