Evan Shirreffs Commits to UM

Will wait to see him live, but I've seen worse QB highlights.

People need to stop saying this is a "find" by Coley/Golden. Everyone knew the kid went unsigned on NSD and everyone knew Miami whiffed on QB this year. Is was an offer out of desperation. Nothing more, nothing less.

And for those of you who blame us not signing Gibson or Lawson because of Kaaya, what's your explanation for OSU pulling Gibson with three stud QBs up there?

Gino Torretta was in the same boat. He ended up surprising people when he arrived on campus. As far as OSU and schools like that--we've always had trouble competing for the marquee players. I keep saying that, and the data backs me up. Even 2001 starters were rather ordinary recruits, except for a few.

Well Ken Dorsey wasn't considered anything but a good backup prospect for Kenny Kelly and thw same for Gino Toretta so I will give the kid time as injuries like a broken thumb are not career altering but alow a player to fly under the radar. We have to get lucky sometime.

Hope the kid proves everybody wrong but I think people need to stop throwing around Dorsey, Toretta, and all those guys names around like some kid is going to sign out of nowhere and turn in to that. It's also unfair to the player. Those guys are generational talents. I'm not holding my breath that we're gonna find another one of them out of nowhere in this type of situation especially considering how much more advanced recruiting has become. As time goes on less and less kids are going to qualify as "diamonds in the rough." Sure, it'll always happen to some extent, but to think that we're just going to pluck a kid from left field and he's going to turn into a generational talent is bonkers

There has GOT to be more to this kids story than even what's out there with his injury and having to sit behind his brother for 2 years. Kid threw for almost 3000 yards and 24 TDs last season. He's 6'5/6'6 200 pounds. Decent arm strength, looks good in the pocket. 4.0 student. Rivals GA writer said he's the 3rd best QB prospect in the state. Was the MVP of the Fla/Ga all star game. First team All State selection.

Looks like he didn't camp many places. Maybe small school? Maybe he intended to go Ivy League and so schools overlooked him? Still can't understand how this kid was still sitting there for the taking last night.

Am not saying the kid looks like an Elite 11 blue chipper but the kid looks like he has legit potential. Film, stats and measurables are as good as a lot of much higher rated prospects. How did this kid fall through the cracks ?

Those were my thoughts exactly, I've seen a lot worse film for QBs with D1 offers. His situation sort of reminds me of Bo Wallace, from the size to his recriutment.( Bo Wallace's only offer came from Arkansas State after signing day). Sometimes good players fall through the cracks when they don't go to a lot of camps. And for what it's worth I trust James Coley as a QB evaluator, this is the same guy who found and signed EJ Manuel, Jameis Winston and Brad Kaaya.

His HS coach says he was just a late bloomer. Sat behind his brother for 2 years, then broke his thumb after only 4 games his JR year and so no one really took him seriously during camps. Looks like he only camped at Duke and Wake. Small town school. Coach said the kid has grown almost 6 inches in the last 2 years. Just blew up his Senior season. First team All State. NE Georgia Player of the Year. For a 13th hour desperation plan B we certainly could have done a lot worse. Hidden gems are a lot harder to come by these days. But at least on paper, this kids story seems to have the potential.

Put this kid in the same circumstances as Kaaya. Kaaya was hitting the camp circuit hard even as a junior because his parents paid for a personal coach who had connections. He transferred out of one school into a big time program where he won a state championship, but still wasn't getting big looks until fairly late in the game (it took UCLA and USC until October of his senior year to offer, and he only ended up with 6 total offers).

I'm not saying this kid is the next Brad Kaaya (whatever that even means at this point), but I agree that it is entirely possible that he is an excellent qb who went under the radar because he didn't have access to the same things Brad did.

Additionally, I think this is exactly the type of player who will excel under the tutelage of someone like Kaaya. He has the physical tools, IMO, and having someone with a strong study ethic to teach him the game will do wonders. Now we just need to get back to giving him some South Florida speed to distribute the ball to.

Should have save scholly for next year. Took enough projects as it is this year.

Alternatively, wait for a scrub JUCO or post-spring transfer (eg Heap) so he doesn't take up a scholarship for 5 years.

I am not calling this kid a scrub. I know nothing about him other than his offer sheet. But given that we waited until after signing day to offer, it appears the coaches have concerns. So calling the signing "huge" is an epic overstatement.

Bottom line: Golden failed yet again by not locking up whoever was on their pre-signing day QB list.

From Lawson the stud to this nobody. Smh.

We edged out Columbia and VMI, though, so I guess Lemming was right, Golden is a great recruiter.

This, Losing LAwson was a huge blow. He seemed capable of offering some minutes next year if needed. Now it's Rosier and this cat.

he looks far better than gray crow coming out of hs. did anyone actually see crow's hs highlights? still don't know why anyone would offer him as a qb

I remember the good days when regardless of how good of a prospect a kid was, we would welcome him to the U. Now we just talk about how much they suck compared to other recruits. Good luck Evan, welcome to the U.

Welcome to the U, Evan

Not sure why some still think Dorsey was some no name. He was a 4 star with an awesome highlight reel.

Well I can say for sure most big programs could give a sh about the 4.0 part.. Also not sure 24 TDs is that amazing anymore.. He is rail thin and somepeople just dont have the metabolisim to pack it on, we shall see.

This. His other choice was UT, and they were a top program then

I'm just glad Folden didn't get deterred when he couldn't steal Jones from FIU. A thinner man would have given up.

Not Folden! Folden wobbled in bloated and battered with his throbbing gout in both big toes and absolutely pillaged FAU and Virginia Military Institute at the eleventh hour.

This is correct. Dorsey was a scrawny kid who no one expected would be ready to go as a Frosh but he was a 4 star with decent offers. He was not a no name kid.

Lets be honest here.. this kids film is LEGIT.. seriously LEGIT... What you're looking for in a qb is can he make all the throws and can he do it from all the styles.. On his film, he's making the short, intermediate and deep throws, and he's giving you shotgun throws, under the center throws, roll out throws, play action throws, screens, and double moves...

I like the pick up... His film goes pound for pound with any PP QB in the southeast... ***** the stars... if you don't camp or come on late in your high school career, trust me, RIVALS, ESPN, 24/7, nor SCOUT know a thing about you...
And Ray Lewis III looked like Barry Sanders in his "film". Context is always important.

Good news is Folden can hook him to the gravy IV feeding tube he uses on all of our defensive players and turn Evan into the next Buck Ortega.
