Key phrase “ picking guys with wrong mindset “!!That’s correct to a degree so then we’re picking the wrong 4 stars because we’re picking guys with the wrong mindset. That’s what I’m saying - before the king of Spain rudely interrupted my conversation with him. It’s one or the other right now because the class rankings are there year in and out mostly. So, either poorly evaluate and pick the wrong 4 stars or we poorly develop. And if poor development is not on the coaching then it’s still on the coaches who evaluated and picked guys with the wrong mindsets.

I think we’ve got a real issue right up the middle at DT and LB. If young guys take big steps, that would make a big difference.100. There’s a reason Mario fired everyone on the defensive side except JT, including his own guy from Oregon staff he brought over. They weren’t getting it done. Outside of DE we have a bunch of meh guys and questions. Luckily the portal accelerated the fix. But it’s still far from top 10 caliber like the class ranking suggest.
That’s an unfair and retrospective expectation for head coaches. That’s correct to a degree so then we’re picking the wrong 4 stars because we’re picking guys with the wrong mindset. Well then I guess it’s not Mario’s fault or responsibility to select and develop winners. It’s everyone else’s fault. That’s an unfair and retrospective expectation for head coaches.
People marry, live next to, or know someone their entire lives and still may not know everything about them.
Too many variables to take into account when recruiting a player to say that they didn’t do everything possible to evaluate.
Anything from homesickness to too much partying. Vices, depression, performance peak, injuries, falling out of love with the process, or even the game itself.
Why some kids can’t adapt or take their craft seriously as an 18-24 year old is a recurring story in all athletics and even academics.
Think about how many day one picks are out of the game in 3 years.
The only proven solution is to recruit a bunch of talented players and let the cream rise to the top. Saban, Kirby, Day, have proven it.
The reason they do it is simple. You can do all the homework you want but no one can predict the progression of work ethic, mental toughness, or talent.
Some people hit a wall as soon as they step on campus. Some never find it and play till they’re 35.
Now if a dude recruits top 5 classes for 4 years and can’t sniff the playoffs then it’s a fireable offense and Day was sitting in a skillet. Everyone knew if he didn’t win his days were up.
I was saying for the last 2 years that Day was doing less with more. He was recruiting and putting players in the league at Uga and bama level with 0 rings to show for it.
Now he’s the man in Columbus. But if it wasn’t for the playoffs and big 10 love he would be unemployed right now.
No, it’s up to the individual if he wishes to develop or not.Well then I guess it’s not Mario’s fault or responsibility to select and develop winners. It’s everyone else’s fault.
It’s either one or the other. It can’t all be on the players and if it is we’re picking the wrong 4 stars… or we’re not developing them. There has to be responsibility falling on the guy in charge of both, evals and development. But I am good with you having your opinion and me having mine. We’re not going to agree on this because I refuse to excuse the staff/coach in charge and put the blame on the players 100% or 80 or 70 percent and you blame the players predominately if not entirely. There’s no meeting ground here, nothing personal to you intended. No, it’s up to the individual if he wishes to develop or not.
Jeff Thomas had a ceiling way higher than X or KJ Osborne.
Literally pro bowl level ceiling imo.
Only 2 of them are cashing nfl checks and it ain’t Manny Diaz’s, Mark Richt or Cristobal’s fault that they are. And it sure as **** ain’t their fault that JT4 isn’t.
This has happened on every team and even bama.
Agiye Hall for example was a problem. Literally at the highest level program at the time with every tool available to him for development. Then at Texas where money and training and nutrition and development.
Dude is playing at Sacramento state and it ain’t because he isn’t talented or because Saban couldn’t evaluate.
Mario needs to elevate his recruiting to those prgrams level or very close to em so when a highly rated kid busts no one bats an eye like those fanbases do. every program is going to miss on evals even UGA & Bama have busts on the regular but when your stacking elite chips the misses dont matter as much.Well then I guess it’s not Mario’s fault or responsibility to select and develop winners. It’s everyone else’s fault.
He’s recruiting good enough by rankings standards to get to the ACCCG. Have we finished number 1 in recruiting in the ACC for the last 3 years? Definitely 1 and maybe 2 one of those years???Mario needs to elevate his recruiting to those prgrams level or very close to em so when a highly rated kid busts no one bats an eye like those fanbases do. every program is going to miss on evals even UGA & Bama have busts on the regular but when your stacking elite chips the misses dont matter as much.
I’ve been talking about this for a decade. It’s the most ridiculous double standard to slam a Miami coach for missing on a blue chip prospect.Mario needs to elevate his recruiting to those prgrams level or very close to em so when a highly rated kid busts no one bats an eye like those fanbases do. every program is going to miss on evals even UGA & Bama have busts on the regular but when your stacking elite chips the misses dont matter as much.
Brother are you saying we shouldn't have recruited this kid? Is this a comment speaking or general or specific ****? Not trying to read through all the thread. If it's general I can see where we say this body type might not be worth the recruitment. Considering the budget goes into it, other potential recruits we lose opportunity with as a result or his NIL #. But no school in the country is gonna go into kids genetics. They show the traits where looking for with football IQ and we pray they can put on weight. Now where you can say is AND ANYONE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY would be wrong is by giving kids with this body type the same insane nil allotments. You pay a kid like that unless he does like Greg and throws 60 pounds of muscle on before spring then he's just wasted a year and we're behind the 8ball. I'd make these tweeners put in work before I'd give big nils out. Maybe saying put in the work isn't accurate or the issue. Most times it's simply they can't pack on weight quick enough. It’s either one or the other. It can’t all be on the players and if it is we’re picking the wrong 4 stars… or we’re not developing them. No I’m not saying that at all about this kid or any in particular. I’m saying we recruit pretty **** well based on rankings. We usually are number 1 in the ACC, maybe 2 one year??? So we’re either getting the wrong 4 stars, for whatever reason or we’re not developing them or we’re not using them correctly - it can’t all be the kids and if it is, we’re not identifying the right ones.Brother are you saying we shouldn't have recruited this kid? Or it takes min 2-3 yrs before the recruiting pays off... Portal is immediate, HS is delayed. No I’m not saying that at all about this kid or any in particular. Ok. We’ll see how we do in year 4.Or it takes min 2-3 yrs before the recruiting pays off... Portal is immediate, HS is delayed.
Last yr was by far our best portal class, and it led to the best offense in school history. Our HS recruiting should start paying off this season and next season and beyond.
I agree we have enough talent to run thru the ACC for sure but we got a ways to go to consistently compete with the Ohio States/Ugas of the world. He’s recruiting good enough by rankings standards to get to the ACCCG. It is what it is anyway
Those guys play for conference and even national championships. They hit on a lot of guys. On top recruits, we hit on Francis. Lyle is very good. Bain had a good freshman year. Hopefully some DL step up.I agree we have enough talent to run thru the ACC for sure but we got a ways to go to consistently compete with the Ohio States/Ugas of the world.
Their just on a diff level recruiting that’s all.. if I bring in 5 5star receivers in a couple years & two of em bust it’s not gonna matter that much when result is Jemeriah Smith & Carnell Tate dominating CFB secondaries ..not a soul is gonna criticize Ryan Day or Brian Hartline because 5 star Julian Fleming flopped lol ….just recruit the best of the best & let the cream rise to the top like it always does.. we’ve gotten some 5 star guys here n there(enough ACC wise) but we arent striking any fear in a team loaded with 5 star players , busts or not. Those guys play for conference and even national championships.
