Early thoughts on Gattis?

Where do you stand?

  • I'm satisfied with his scheme and play-calling and approve of his job performance.

  • Sample size is too small, I'll reserve judgement until we play some quality opponents.

  • I wish we had hired someone else.

I’m the biggest kool aid drinker in the world pre season until I see it for my own eyes. If we run the same stuff vs A&M that we did vs Southern Miss we are going to get blown out. Simple as that.

This is just confusing because APP ST just ran the same stuff and beat A&M. So I’m just not sure why our fans think we wouldn’t be successful with this gameplan.

I'm not going to be an apologist for the offensive production on Saturday, but some of you calling Southern Miss a "no name" is a direct correlation to your lack of football knowledge.

Defensively (i'm not talking about the freshman QB or frank gore jr.) they only allowed 155 rushing yds/game in 2021, and added four transfers on the defensive line, 3 from the SEC and one from Memphis. They're expected to be a sleeper in the Sun Belt (and as we've seen recently with teams like App St, Georgia St, Marshall, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, etc., this is no pushover conference).

This isn't some random bum G5 team. They have some guys that can play. Now - it doesn't mean we're not supposed to be significantly better than them, nor excuse the lack of offensive production (especially early on in the run game/pass blocking), but these guys don't suck.
Lol they’re 3-9 last year and 0-2 to start this year. It is a random scrub team

Agreed. Good thing gattis has more than 5 plays in his playbook
We’ll see. Said the same about richt and it was literally five plays lol. He’s also the same guy that directed ****** Michigan offenses too. So he’s not perfect by any means. Saturday will show anlot

Whatever the offense is, it's Mario's. It's the offense he wants. He's not getting his dream/forever job and then just handing over the reigns to the OC without strict instructions/expectations.

Sometimes you just have to believe what you hear and see.

We've heard the rumors from people like Mycah Pittman and McClendon negative recruiting..Mario wants a run first offense.

Then we've seen who he hired..Gattis, who won the Broyles award last year running the ball.

And now 5* receivers won't commit until they see what happens.

And Mario is an offensive line coach. Those guys LOVE to run the ball. Imposing their will. Ask any legit offensive lineman in the country what makes them feel better than anything else. It's when they can just maul the defense just running the ball and there's nothing the defense can do about it.

There's enough evidence out there to expect
us to be an offense that will try extremely hard and plan to establish the run. Hopefully with Mario's experience and Gattis' creativity, we can find a way to establish the run AND have a dynamic and creative offense that can put up points and play to the strengths of the team, no matter what our personnel is.

Point is:

1. it's too early to judge Gattis.
2. No matter how Gattis ends up, this is Mario's team and offense. If Gattis doesn't work out, getting a new OC might improve the offense, but only because Mario also was willing to adapt. Let's hope it doesn't come to that and Gattis is successful AND Mario is adapting as well.

People think the worst parts of our team are the Linebackers, Secondary and Receiver…. And then want to run a pass happy, explosive offense that dictates more plays to receivers (who they think aren’t fast and don’t create separation), more plays for the defense (the quicker we score the more those linebackers and secondary are on the field).

That seriously makes sense to you guys? Of course a possession offense is best for us when our head coach is the best **** offensive lineman coach, our RB room is the deepest room on the team and we want to protect our defense.

This team is not built for firefights.

He scored 35pts per game at Michigan. I wouldn’t call that ******.

I have seen tons of new formations and variations of plays with gattis. Just cause TVD played awful isn’t gattis fault. wR have been open TVD has made bad/incorrect reads.

Y’all really out to get Gattis after 2 games. Clearly you didn’t like the hire to begin with if you are already complaining.

If you're really going to cite that as your only evidence, you belong in my aforementioned post.

They didn't lose their top 3 QBs or anything last year, or lose to Liberty in 4OT's coached by a very good Hugh Freeze in their opener this year. Nope, they belong with Bethune Cookman.

We’ll see this weekend. It’s the first real game we have this year.

I think it's extremely unlikely for us to have the time of possession advantage that App State had. Expecting them to run less than 40 plays against us is not a realistic game plan. If A&M ran even 50 plays against App st, they probably get just one more explosive play and win that game.
