You guys are nuts to be so negative about Strong. It would be an excellent hire, certainly far superior to Butch Davis. He checks the boxes in so many categories that Al Golden never threatened.
It's a lousy fit at Texas. We should recognize that and take advantage of his lowered value, not overreact and run away. You guys must have sold the biotech stocks when they were at 2015 panic bottom a couple of months ago.
There have been flashes of brilliance. That's one category Golden never managed. Strong took a massive lead as a huge underdog in a BCS game while upsetting an SEC power. Even this year he has a dominant win over Oklahoma, a huge rival and perhaps the best team in the Big 12.
I love defensive intensity. Louisville in 2013 was first nationally in yards allowed per game, third nationally in yards allowed per play, gave up only 6.0 yards per pass attempt, and surrendered only 8 touchdown passes in 13 games. That 8 touchdown passes allowed was fewer than any of the other 123 major college teams.
Here's the absolute hilarity: I guarantee there are posters on this forum and specifically in this thread who thought Miami would win that 2013 bowl game against Louisville -- despite those defensive numbers -- and now are ridiculing Charlie Strong toward our coaching vacancy. Now that's quite a parlay. Why be wrong at the door only, when I can carry it around with me?
Those Louisville defenders he recruited were still wreaking havoc in 2014, and showed up in bunches in the early rounds of both the 2014 and 2015 NFL drafts.
Big 12 offenses are problematic to defend. Strong and Bedford have had mixed results. It was overlooked last season that Texas soared defensively compared to Mack Brown's final season in 2013. The Longhorns finished 8th in yards allowed per play, which is **** tough to accomplish in that league. There were positive indications late in the season then the bowl debacle against Arkansas seemed to carry over to this year. Strong seemed to overreact to fan base anxiety after the blowout loss at Notre Dame. Many staff changes.
Still the big outings are there. Texas held Oklahoma to by far its lowest yardage output of 2015 and Oklahoma State to its second lowest. Texas very nearly upset both of those teams, which are currently in serious contention for Final Four berths. If so, the current dialog would not be the same. Oklahoma State tied the game inside 2 minutes after a stupid unsportsmanlike penalty against Strong set up the field goal, and then won the game in the final seconds after a shanked 10 yard punt.
If we hired Strong I suspect we would steal prized recruits in the late going, instead of so many of them finding every excuse to bolt.
I'm not claiming he's a miracle worker. Our stadium would remain.
