Do you think Butch is kicking himself?

Not a chance. Easily the most overrated coach we've ever had. So overrated he can't even land a job. Hiss current gig pays well I imagine with less investment of time but if he was all that and a bag of chips someone would've thrown a ton of money at him. He's the king of doing less with more.

Old topic, everything has already been covered.

butch was elite at gathering and developing talent, but was also a fairly average game day coach. saban is arguably the best coach in the history of college football in recruiting, developing, and game day coaching. they're really not comparable.

I love me some Butch Davis. I'm still upset we choose Richt over him, but some of y'all are trippin. Butch had his faults. **** I'll never forget losing to East Carolina.

Nick Saban is on another level. He has won 5 of the last 13 championships with 2 different schools. Kids worship Bama like we loved Miami back in the day.

Only a Homer would compare the two.

Howard's five year tenure from 1979 - 1983 was the greatest rebuild and coaching job I've ever witnessed. It will never be matched in my lifetime (or my after life).

F Saban and his highly funded, gold plated program.

Butch was a guy who recognized talent, but with the changing college landscape, I don't believe he would have been as successful. With the proliferation of internet scouting, there aren't nearly as many diamonds in the rough as their once were, you can't outtalent as many teams as you used to. Butch was never strong on gameday, and he was only able to consistently win once he had far and away superior talent than everyone on the schedule. There's a reason why he was no better than 8-5 at UNC, and that was with him having one of the best recruiting staffs in the country. I will always appreciate what Butch did here, but there's a reason why people aren't lining up to interview him, the game has passed him by, and his strengths have been neutralized by technology.

Even if Butch had not taken the Cleveland job he would left within a few years. It is a fair assumption he would have won the title in 2001, and probably 2002. He would been better prepared for Ohio State. After consecutive titles his phone would have been off the hook with NFL offers. I thought he would take the Texans job, or maybe the Cowboys. He wanted to try the NFL.

How many titles would Jimmy Johnson have won at Miami? He came close to winning three, ended up with one.

Coaches that leave discover real fast that what makes Miami special is the talent located so close to home. Most kids want to stay home. Put a good coach at Miami who can keep the kids from leaving, and Miami wins. Richt knows that and he's staying.

wasnt alive for the howard years, but recently i went back and watched every game i could in order, beginning with the season before him. i found and read article after article in the miami hurricane archives as i watched the games.

that man's destiny was to be the greatest of all time, and to do it at miami... and he knows it. will haunt him forever.

LOL at Miami fans being Butch haters. We'd be going on 20+ years of irrelevancy now if it wasn't for him.

If jimmy would of stayed in college until the time he retired..... Bruh... I can't even count how many chips we would have

Miami coaches have always been transient opportunists, just like so many of the people of Miami. They came, they saw, they conquered. It's the kind of guys that this city attracts. Sink or swim, it's gotten us five national titles.

I can't fault Butch for taking an NFL head coaching job- but I'm certainly not going to cry on his account.

People forget butch never actually won anything as HC....dudes a bigger legend than that dog from the sandlot.

Yep . He is at best an a decent coach . UM people hated that dude when he was here its only in legends that he somehow became a great coach LMAO.

Butch didn't have to stay. I've said it before but when this program is at it's peak we're not only putting players in the league but coaches as well. With Richt we're not going to have to worry about that. The blame for our demise is aimed squarely at that **** troll president we had and the administration that got lazy with coaching searches.

When Richt finishes his coaching career here at UM he will be the be the best coach ever. You can see it now with the foundation that he is laying. Miami will be stacked with talent for years to come. I believe when MIA, FSU and FLA are all strong again Saban will retire. Remember Saban and others didn't when those NC's until all three Florida schools were down.

These two would have even brought the Butch machine down

I hate Saban, Florida and FSU as much as the next guy, but wtf are you talking about? Florida won 2 in the 3 years right before Saban got his first at Alabama and FSU won in 2013.
