I know The U has fans everywhere, but Florida is still home base at the end of the day.

Obviously being "Southern" means different things to different people, but just wanted to know what Canes Fam thinks

Me -- born and raised (all over) North Florida? Yes. 100 percent.

(This topic came up for discussion on a sports talk show up here in Atlanta wrt to best fits for SEC expansion)

Depends. Are you having a BBQ, picnic, or other food related event exclusive to Southerners?

I don't think of most of Florida as Southern. Sure there are definitely areas (the panhandle for sure), but I don't think any areas near Miami are Southern.
Here's the thing: if it's very clearly not anything else, then what is it? My Mom was born in Spain, lived in Cuba as a small child, and grew up in Kendall/Cutler Ridge from age 5. My Dad came to West Palm Beach from Argentina in '76. I grew up in WPB. I've lived/worked/schooled in Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade. Clearly, I have absolutely nothing to do with the West, Midwest, Northeast, etc.

So, I figure I must be a Southerner by default.

I moved to Cape Coral when I was 4. I went from there to Miami to WPB. My family has history in New England, but my life has always been in FL.

If people from South Florida aren't Southerners, then what are they?

I am a Southerner in a lot of ways related to birth, upbringing, culture, etc.

I do not think I am a Southerner in my overall world outlook.

I was born in an unofficial Southern state, Missouri (one of the 13 stars on the Confederate battle flag). I spent most of my life in Florida. I now live and work in Georgia. We still have a family farm (that we just visit occasionally) and much of my cuisine-related upbringing involves Southern food. I've had a mild southern accent in my younger years which I worked to eliminate when I was at UM, but I sometimes slip a bit when I'm around a lot of drawls.

But I love living in larger cities, I enjoy all kinds of life experiences and travel and food that are not limited to the South. I am fine being in all kinds of settings and living situations, though I feel most comfortable in the southeast US, probably due to familiarity more than a reasoned-out choice.

And I'm fine with either the Big 10 or the SEC.
