I was a little off on the timing, more recent than I thought.Do you know what it was called?
25 years? You mean the last 50 years, 25 years ago was 1998. My family has been in Miami since the 1920's, dad is from Sicily mom is from a tiny town in South Georgia, grandfather moved them down to Miam-uh due to the construction boom, he was a carpenter, the grew up in Allapattah...point is Miami was a town in the South back in the day, but never Southern. The ethnic mix of Florida has changed a lot in the last 25 years for sure. Initially the Cuban migration was THE huge change, but the Haitian, Venezuelan and Colombian influx has been incredible. Over 250,000 Colombians now live in South Florida, over 180,000 Venezuelans and close to 100,000 Haitians, with another 50,000 Brazilians as well. Then good numbers from Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and even the Dominican Republic and Peru. Makes for incredible cuisine.

The "Capital of America Latina" eso es.Agree, growing up in latin america, Miami is my favorite city in the US. I think the desire to put different cities in nice little regional buckets like “north” and “south” is misplaced… every is unique, but if I had to do it I would put Miami in whatever category other US territories like Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are in. Not north or south. Caribbean.
I was born in Boston Massachusetts and raised in Miami Florida (Coral Park c/o '96). I do not consider myself a Southern Man.
