Do stars matter? A look at the top teams & what it means for UM

Yes but it's not the end all be all.

Also can we STOP with the whole "[Insert HC here] can see something in these 3 stars that others don't" nonsense. We've been saying that since Shannon and look where we are. We hire these coaches who load up on 3 stars and treat their evaluations like they're Saban or even Butch Davis. They have not earn that reputation.

The only thing that matters is the players, can they make plays or not, when it counts! To many guys getting rated based off of the camp circuits/7 on 7's with no pads. Why people keep trying to make this subject relevant is always comical to me, but worst of all, these b.s. ratings warp the minds of alot of people who post from reality. When you got people criticizing coach rumph and coach banda just because certain players went elsewhere, but we not only hac the #1 pass defense in the nation, but we had the #1 pass effiency defense in the nation to as well

To the guy above.

Pads on or off, you can generally tell who has the athleticism to play. Still, athleticism isn't everything, just a key component to tell where their ceiling is. Lots of other factors determine if they can reach that athletic ceiling. You won't see that at a lot of positions in a camp.

If a wide receiver can get open at a camp, he can get open in a game. If a corner can cover, he can cover in a game. A running back doesn't show much in a camp. Linebackers, they don't show much either. OL and DL just show quickness, strength, etc. Much tougher to garner much from those last three positions.

Of course stars matter.
So, all coach has to do is sign a bunch of 4 and 5 stars.
Pretty simple.

Well, we all know that isn't happening.
We don't like it, but there's a reason Manny has recruited some "very good" players. We're not attractive to most of the elite talent yet.
We have to hope the upper-mid level dogs he and his staff are recruiting will take us to the next plateau so we can attract more 4 and 5 star recruits.

Totally disagree. You need to look back at Cane history, and then tell me about how stars matter. What you are, what your offensive and defense system is, players who will fit your systems, and, most importantly, the evaluations by your coaches, matter more than stars. Check out the star ratings of Canes teams under Howard, JJ, Dennis, and Butch. Everyone who is stuck on stars needs to understand how the star system works. First, the various entities involved are in it to sell their product. Second, there is no way they can see everyone they rate, and who are they to be doing evaluations in the first place? What's the most fertile recruiting ground...Florida, particularly South Florida. To sell their product they have to spread out the stars over the country. again, take a look at Canes history. I guaranty you, a 3 star from Dade county is a better athlete/player than a 4/5 star from most anywhere else. Want a couple of examples? Here's just 2. Russell Maryland, essentially unrated with no offers to speak of, signed only because Hubbard Alexander evaluated him. Or, how about Warren Sapp. He was a TE in high school. Evaluation and coaching beats Max Emfinger, et al. any day

O God shoot me, here we go with this again some of yall need a hot tub time machine to stay stuck in the past cause the now aint for yall.

Rankings definitely matter in this day in age. Not with just on field performance and competing at the highest level but with perception of the school in recruiting also . Players want to play with the other top ranked recruits

Obviously guys like don Chaney and Demond Demas (Texas A&M) are different but largely a lot of these guys want to play with the other elite recruits.

Love that response by Chaney by the way

Any examples in the last decade?

Oddly, if they ran that same statistical study for the period from 1983 to 1993, they'll find the same pattern will hold. Even though there weren't camps and sites handing out stars, everyone knew who the "blue chips" were. Sure there were a couple of outliers (BYU 84, Colorado/Georgia Tech 90), but the teams that stacked the most "blue chips" (Ok, Neb, ND) , won the most. Miami on the other hand, more resembled Wisconsin and Stanford. They knew what their identify was. While there were some, they didn't land a lot of elite level prospects. They were deep in the positions that mattered (QB and DT). And they got the most of their talent (through development).

In other words, not much has changed. Including of course their number one item: that coaching matters.

If anything, the more you look at it, the more it appears that Dabo is following the pattern at Clemson that Howard and JJ set at Miami. It's only been recently they're stacking 5*s. The only 5* they got in his first 5 years was Sammy Watkins. Deshaun Watson, a 4*, came year 6 at a key position that turned into a generational talent. Then there were a string of a single 5*s until 2018 but they were all at DT or QB.

We have rarely been in the game for master recruiter coaches.

Those guys command money this program can’t or won’t spend.

They are rare.

The biggest problem in having a good program has been unbalanced teams, poor player development, and use of the guys on hand.

Everyone wants a return to the glory days instantly, but the coaches that do that are few and far between.

We have to build this thing from the ground up. It will be tough to get into the Bama, Clemson, OSU, OU class. But there is ZERO excuse for us not to be a consistent 10 win team that dominated the Coastal. That goal has been elusive due to poor coaching alone.

Yeah it takes time and yeah fans are impatient. But the reason the fans have turned on coaches so venomously is that they get defensive and double down on bonehead bs that everyone but the slurpers can see WILL NOT WORK.

Dabo and Kelly survived and got better because they made changes. Yes their hands were forced by strong a.d.’s but they didn’t resist the obvious when their backs were against the wall like UM coaches have. ND and Clemson have playoff berths as their reward.

The most realistic and fastest way to get back to national prominence is to inoculate the program from Smartest Guy In The Room Syndrome.

Times have changed being elite is more difficult. But the embarrassing lows we have hit are self inflicted.

We may not always be great, but we should NEVER,EVER,EVER NOT BE GOOD.

Any examples in the last decade?

How about the DT from Houston. He wasn't highly rated yet he just went in the first round . Even Dono couldn't ***** him up. There are others but I'm not going to spend the time searching. The problem had been that most of them the last decade have not been Hurricanes. Which goes to the article's no. 1 point: coaching matters. How have we stacked up coaching wise the last decade? Particularly their evaluation and development skills?

We've had Golden trying to recruit big 10 dough boys and ballooning guys Chickillo at the same time disciplining others (like Luther Robinson the DT from Jacksonville) for making plays rather than doing their "assignment". Which incidentally violates their no. 2 point for schools that won’t land a lot of elite level prospects: they understand their identity.

Ed Oliver was a five star recruit who picked Houston to be coached by Tom Herman. It was a huge pickup for a school of their calibre. He had offers from everyone.
