Discussion: future starting O-line

I have a hard time believing that Williams is going to be a LT. I understand Colbert switched position as a GT, but he wasn't a two year starter like Williams. I think 3 spots are locked up with Scaile, Williams and Gaynor. The left side of the offensive line is anyone's guess.

Walker and Washington definitely need a shirt, 4 games and that’s it. I’d like to redshirt rivers but he might play more than 4 games with a injury here and there throughout the season. Being able to redshirt Zion would be awesome but I just don’t see that happening.

Williams, Campbell, and Zion Nelson will be the rotating tackles this year. I don't see Walker playing. He should redshirt anyway. Wouldn't shock me if they tried to see if they could get anything out of Herbert before giving Walker burn as the rarely play fourth tackle.

Scaife, Gaynor, Rivers, Clark, Traore seem to be the rotation on the interior.

If I were to guess at the starting lineup...

LT - Campbell OR Nelson
LG - Clark - by midseason, Rivers
C - Gaynor / Clark
RG - Scaife
RT - Williams / Campbell

Traore and hopefully Cleveland Reed will likely be the deep rotation interior player at some point.

What they did to Zion last year was criminal , one of the most fd up things I’ve ever seen from corches. They threw a true freshmen ol out there that was raw to the position , 285 pounds , against a top ten defense while not chipping or running max protection. One of the maddest moments I’ve had as a fan. Immediately I was suspect of penos.
Have you heard any feedback on what Coach Justice thinks of Zion? I think in this style
of offense, Zion can have a nice bounce back this season.

If I had to bet, that's the starting O line in my opinion as well. Williams has a ton of experience playing at a pretty high level on the RIGHT side....why mess with that? Leave him on the right and move Scaife to guard and you've solved 2/5th's of the O-line problems. If Gaynor and Clark progress like most of us think they will...you've got 4/5th's of the problem solved.

It's ALOT easier to scheme around ONE deficiency than multiple ones. Put your best linemen where they are most comfortable and scheme around the remaining spot. In a perfect world....Campbell hits the ground running and takes control of the LT spot. I'm not ready to give up on Zion yet despite how horrible he was. It was completely unfair and just an indictment on Richt and to some degree Manny for failures in recruiting that put us in a position where we had to start the kid out of the gate, AS A TRUE FRESHMAN, at a position that he was clearly a project for. He got here weighing what many linebackers weigh. It's a minor miracle he put on as much weight as he did in the short amount of time.

The good news is we have some options and probably won’t have to have any Freshmen starting. Last year we had 2 True Freshmen, Campbell was RS-Fr and Gaynor was a first time starter.

I agree about Campbell really looking good at G. Watched him Vs Duke and he was winning his matchup while everyone looked like Turnstiles.

Watching Williams and I really think he has a great skill set for LT.

LT - Williams -Nelson
LG - Clark/Traore
C - Gaynor-Clark
RG - Scaife-Reed
RT - Campbell-Herbert

I hope that Rivers will get some game reps this year. I’m not sure where his best position will be at G or T, but he’s a beast and will be very good down the road.

IMO Donaldson was a liability a lot of last year. He was overweight and had a hard time moving. A long way from his HS tape sprinting down the field.

I’m excited to watch week 1 and see the difference in the scheme and experience of the Line.
Just watch Donaldson high school tape, aine I never watched it, and that dude can move. Like wtf happen while he was at UM.

I know nothing about his opinion of Zion but there was a lot of the same issues with the ol in spring. It’ll take some time to coach them up. It’s a completely different blocking scheme.

Why are people so sold on Traore? He seems to have come out of nowhere, and everyone is penciling him in as a lock. I doubt we'll see Walker start at LT right away. I'd put Williams at LT and try Campbell at RT. If Campbell can't handle a T spot, move him to G where he looked pretty good at the end of the year and put Scaife back out at RT.

I'm all for Traore's emergence but it seems like it's just fans overhyping him from being on the first team in spring. Fans tend to let their optimism get the better of them when it comes to transfers and new names.

Meanwhile they toss Jakai Clark to the wayside, when he actually showed signs of potential last year despite playing as a True Freshman on that awful OL.

LT- Williams
LG- Clark
C- Gaynor
RG- Scaife
RT- Campbell

Williams has to be at LT IMO

Scaife can be at RT if needed and slide Campbell into guard or see what Traore or Reed got.

A strong fall from Rivers would add even more flexibility

I think everyone should watch Lashlee's offense and just watch what the OL do. He asks his OL to do very different things than they did last season. The guards really need to move their asses. While it makes sense to note Campbell's play inside last year, because it was definitely better than his play outside, it does not necessarily translate to what Lashlee will ask of them this year.

On top of it all, perhaps it was the game set I watched, he really asks his RT to do some work. Therefore, while in a more conventional offense (like the one we just witnessed fall in its face without a strong OL) we'd expect a transfer like Williams to automatically shift to LT and give us a fighting chance on 5-7 step PA drops, it's not necessary in what we've seen of Lashlee.

Can Williams still end up at LT? Sure. But when we think of Nelson or Campbell at LT and Williams at RT, consider the difference in job responsibilities.

LT-Williams
LG-Clark
C-Gaynor
RG-Scaife
RT-Campbell

I could see Scaife and Campbell switching positions depending on Campbell's progression at tackle.
I like what you did there with the G’s. Most ppl would put Scaife on the left side. It if he’s on the right he is there to help Campbell out at RT. Good Balance here I think could happen. Only thing that would stop this is if they shirt Clark to allow space with him and Gaynor. He wouldn’t take over the C spot until he was a senior.
