Discussion: future starting O-line

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nelson wins a tackle spot again. Campbell looked good inside and there could be a legit reason he never took Nelson’s spot outside last season. Nelson was a true freshman that just put in 60 pounds. I can’t think of a less advantageous position to be in.

Wouldn’t be shocked if

Williams/Nelson
Campbell
Gaynor
Rivers/Clark
Nelson/Williams

With Rivers starting by end of season.

Campbell is going to start the season at LT

I do ask this question- if experience is so vital for the growth of Walker, Rivers, Washington, Van Dyke, etc... wasn't last year's experience vital for Nelson? I wouldn't count Nelson out. He's just going to need some psychological coaching after taking that *** whoopin.

Zion just wasn’t good enough. That guy was getting beat as soon as the ball got snapped. That has nothing to do with weight, strength, experience or none of that. I have never seen a tackle get beat at the snap and so slow out his stance in my life

Agree to disagree. He has physical tools, he was uncoached for sport and position specific skills, the S&C program did him no favors, the entire line had visual and cognitive issues, and the scheme was flat out malpractice. Also, he was a redshirt kid who had to start game 1. Also malpractice.

What does that have to do with getting out your stance? As bad as the o-line was nobody else had that problem

The S&C program helped him gain 40 pounds from the time he early enrolled until Game 1. I don’t think that was the issue here.

From all the recent reports it sounds like the plan is campbell at LT and williams at RT

A brand new O-line coach saw 4 practices. That could switch up half way through the first day of fall practice.

Good point LuCane - I noticed Williams actually pulling quite a bit at Houston from his RT spot as well.

Putting weight on isn't the only answer to good S&C or people would think Al Golden's use of Chickillo was brilliant.

Did the player have enough power generated from his power angles to effectively perform?
Did the player have the proper vision and cognitive training to ID his target and carry out his assignment? (I would say no. Many missed assignments that were obvious pre-snap)
Did the player gain the sport and position specific training to carry out the task? (The OL hasn't been properly developed this way in years)
Was a focus put on transfer effect and proper energy system training and management? (I would say no re the focus on mat drills, 300's and 110's and how slow the team looked all season).
But, he gained weight and 2-3 other players looked "Swol"

Was going to like this until I realized you didn't have our best OL listed.

99% of true freshman tackles across the country wouldn't have been good enough to start day 1 LT at Miami... ESPECIALLY with a scheme that left him on an island way more than it should have with a QB who didn't know how to stand in a pocket.

Yes it was bad, we all knew it wouldn't be great he was supposed to be a development at T not a plug and play guy.

"Wouldn't be shocked if" is different than "I think the line should be". It's just a possibility not many have put down. I don't think anyone on the outside looking in can tell what the best combination is given a new scheme; let alone the inside.
