Did Mario think ND was out of timeouts at the end?

I give the guy a ton of credit, and he does deserve plenty of it, but I'd be remiss to not point out flaws.

Go back and watch the game again. Mario had no idea ND still had 1 timeout left when we ran the ball on 3rd and 4 at the end of the game.

There was 1:14 left to go in the game, we had 3rd and 4 from the ND 30. After the 1 yard run from Brown, they cut to Mario, and you can see him confused and saying "NO WAY!". I'm 100% convinced he was yelling at the refs thinking ND was out of timeouts when they clearly had 1 left. He was thinking he could run it down to about 30 seconds and kick the FG, and even if you miss, you're probably going to overtime. Otherwise, why are you playing for a FG with a minute left?

So instead of running it down to 30 seconds like he thought they would, you have to kick with over a minute left, and now even if you make it, you leave them a full minute to just go down to get a FG to tie the game.

Thankfully the defense bailed us out and completely swallowed Carr on the last drive, but this is maddening stuff. The dude has so many positive qualities and I was fully in support of him getting this job, and still am because the program has been flipped, but **** you've been a Head Coach for 15 years now, this is stuff that an 8 year old playing Madden is on top of.

If I'm wrong, someone tell me how and I'll gladly delete this. But I was at the game and going berserk how we played it, and it still makes very little sense but it makes slightly more if you know he thinks they were out of timeouts. Watching it back, I almost fell off the couch and immediately said to myself, "Holy ****, he thought they were out of timeouts".
I'm so glad you pointed this out cause i was telling everyone where we were the same thing. He totally didn't know they had that last timeout which drives me crazy. Love 99% of what he is doing, but he is still so totally bad at this one aspect of the game. Its mind boggling.

I don’t think he presumed the injury timeout was assessed or that ND was otherwise out of TOs. I think he was *****ing that they didn’t assess the TO, but was going with the run play knowing ND had one in their pocket. To believe otherwise would mean you also think Dawson and his entire staff missed it as well. Highly unlikely.

A) theres legit like ZERO chance he doesn't have someone in his ear telling him how many timeouts the opponents have in that situation. Like I could believe he was told hey they have 0 timeouts here, and then he's like just run then....

B) It's entirely possible whoever was checking about timeouts confused an injury or something or a previous stoppage as a timeout used. In fact I feel like i remember an injury to a ND guy late like that and the refs blowing a stoppage, but they specifically didn't take away a timeout, I'm not sure in that moment if they were Supposed to or not though, So I didn't really think anything of it.

C) He was probably just continuiously *****ing the entire drive to be honest. We were getting stuffed. Also if he did think they should have had 1 less this is reason too

D) Who knows, maybe the scoreboard was showing it incorrectly and that's what they were going off of.

Not 100% but if I remember right the announcers said ND was out of time outs.

Dawson knew exactly what the situation was.

I can't say I'm 100% certain, but the thought definitely crossed my mind. Unreal.

They were running the ball on third down whether Notre Dame had no timeouts or nine.

Also, making them use their final timeout was huge. If they had a timeout left , there would have been no run-off when Carr took the intentional grounding penalty.

Or he’s just saying it to cover their asses or maybe it’s true . I will say watching Mario coach in a close game as a Cane fan is like watching somebody trim your pubes with a chain saw

Agree on the first part. Not on the second.

Getting a first down and kicking the ball with :03 left would've been huger.

That part is moot, though. To me. I hated the decision to run the ball, but it's far more egregious IF that was decision was made due to not knowing how many timeouts the opponent had.

I just didn't know if anyone else had seen what I did, so I made the thread. Like I said, I almost fell off the couch. It sure as **** looked to me like someone who thought ND was out of timeouts. So I was interested in how some other people felt and if they noticed it too, or it I was crazy. Or, crazier than usual, I suppose.

They love it, man. You can see it in the pre-game video all over TikTok. The Canes are about to run on the field and I **** you not, Mario has to be back in the 80s. It is extremely hard for great players to lose that feeling.

If he hasn’t already, he should walk to the math department and find himself a genius and hand off all those split time decisions, preferably a nerd that doesn’t even know what football is.
Freeman does exactly this. I’m sure many other coaches do as well.

Good point. After the grounding, if they had the TO they'd have had :38-9, 2nd & 17 from their own 30. They'd have had time to get set too. Hit a 15-20 yard pass and they conceivably could have attempted a FG, but certainly a hail mary.

Risking a throw on 3rd & 4 to get a 5-10 yard shorter FG and chewing the rest of the clock not as clear cut as I thought. Thanks
