Did Mario think ND was out of timeouts at the end?

Because 1 timeout doesn't mean anything with that amount of time left.

What's the expected win percentage if you have the ball down by 3 with a minute left and 1 timeout versus zero? In college football? Very, very minimal.

It's far more important to get closer for your kicker and kick the ball with no time remaining in the process than it is them burning their last timeout.

UNLESS......you thought the other team didn't have any timeouts, because a minute with no timeouts versus under 30 seconds with no timeouts is a MASSIVE win expectancy delta.

We'll never know the true story but it was a "Holy ****!" moment for me just now finishing the first rewatch. Maybe I interpreted it incorrectly, but I've been watching ball for many, many, many years and seen just about every iteration of body language and reactions in just about every possible situation, and to me, that looked like a dude who was shocked the clock stopped again. Would love to be wrong because I love Mario and I think this is a really good football team right now and it's built to last.
Definitely think he was surprised about it. Don't think it changed the plan at all. Would have still played for a FG and kept the ball on the ground.

He just anticipated 30 seconds instead of 60 seconds.

I just don't understand how this guy can be so buttoned up with everything else. He's evolved quite a bit. But this game day **** is wild. He looks insane on the sidelines. His eyes are ******* wide open, he's awkward, mouth is dry AF. Maybe lay off the 19 Cuban coffees and just go low dose adderall?

Probably not. I just think if you know they have 1 timeout and you run the ball, it's an insanely awful decision. Really, really bad.

I'd have been more OK with the decision had they really had no timeouts. Then it is, essentially, a win the game on FG or go to OT play, almost certainly. Maybe ND tries to get into FG range with 20ish seconds, but I really doubt it.

But I'm sitting there knowing, along with 17 million other people, that ND has 1 timeout, and it's 3rd and 4. Put the ball in your $3M man's hands and let him try to get you a first down.

I don’t buy that one bit. He has an analyst that has one job, and that’s for him to guide time management. So either the analyst just lost his job, or you are reading into something.

I love mario glad as **** he is our coach but man he looks lost and scared on the sidelines everytime he on camera lol looks like he bout to have a full on panic attack 😂

I give the guy a ton of credit, and he does deserve plenty of it, but I'd be remiss to not point out flaws.

Go back and watch the game again. Mario had no idea ND still had 1 timeout left when we ran the ball on 3rd and 4 at the end of the game.

There was 1:14 left to go in the game, we had 3rd and 4 from the ND 30. After the 1 yard run from Brown, they cut to Mario, and you can see him confused and saying "NO WAY!". I'm 100% convinced he was yelling at the refs thinking ND was out of timeouts when they clearly had 1 left. He was thinking he could run it down to about 30 seconds and kick the FG, and even if you miss, you're probably going to overtime. Otherwise, why are you playing for a FG with a minute left?

So instead of running it down to 30 seconds like he thought they would, you have to kick with over a minute left, and now even if you make it, you leave them a full minute to just go down to get a FG to tie the game.

Thankfully the defense bailed us out and completely swallowed Carr on the last drive, but this is maddening stuff. The dude has so many positive qualities and I was fully in support of him getting this job, and still am because the program has been flipped, but **** you've been a Head Coach for 15 years now, this is stuff that an 8 year old playing Madden is on top of.

If I'm wrong, someone tell me how and I'll gladly delete this. But I was at the game and going berserk how we played it, and it still makes very little sense but it makes slightly more if you know he thinks they were out of timeouts. Watching it back, I almost fell off the couch and immediately said to myself, "Holy ****, he thought they were out of timeouts".

or we could have thrown it against a pre-season All American Notre Dame Cornerback

who then picks it off from receivers who have never caught a pass from Carson Beck in a single college game.

At least he wasn't playing for over time....and taking a knee, just to prove a point.

Refs ****ed this up, the ball was placed late in game, ND player got “hurt” after ball was placed and ND was not charged TO per the rules… Mario was right here, refs were wrong and he was calling them out on their bull****.

Just like we were fully aware to keep running the ball when we needed to kneel, correct? Just like Deion was also fully aware of him not using his 2 T.O’s left as CU bled out the clock?

Listen, pls understand some of the most prideful ppl in sports r coaches. They don’t like being second guessed or made to look incompetent, & will spin any narrative to justify lapse moments.
If I could print this out and plaster this everywhere I would. Football coaches would rather lose their way than win in any way, which is insane in a sport where wins might matter more than any other.

I thought I was the only one that noticed the officials weren't taking away timeouts for injuries of defensive players in this game...

OK, even if you assess an injury timeout THEN BOTH TEAMS ARE ALLOWED TO HUDDLE AND TALK.

But that never happened.

Whether you think the rule was applied correctly or not, you can always ask. You can always look at the scoreboard. You can get a clarification.

What play? Because if it happened, I want to know when it happened.

I recall seeing one play where a ND player was down, the ref STARTED to act like an injury would be attended to, and then the player got up before anything formal happened.

Just name the play, everyone has video that can be posted.

Could be.

And there is a massive difference between knowing they have 1 timeout left but disagreeing that they should, and hammering that point home.

Versus thinking they are out and being wrong.

If he was yelling because he was continuously calling them out after every TO that they should have 1 less than they did, then he obviously did nothing wrong and I applaud him.

But if he never checked and was not absolutely certain, and the reaction was him realizing in real-time they're not out, then yikes.
