those delayed middle runs, and some of the middle screens were wide open, i can see USF, UF and FSU copying that

get belichek lolCrisis management on the sideline
You like the clock management by Mario? Okay lol that's quite comical to say the least. He constantly calls unnecessary timeouts. He got bailed out just before halftime by a great catch by Daniels and a gutsy throw by Beck. He let 40 seconds run off the clock without calling a TO.Yeah baby, the guy is a wizard!Regarding point 1, aside for this game in the 4th quarter, and maybe a little at end of 3rd, I've actually liked most of his game and clock management decisions the past year. Idk who he hired to be making these decisions but I think we took a major step up last season. And some of the decision even this game were good. I think people get WAY too up-in-arms about timeout usage, especially in the first half. Like I'm sorry but not every timeout is a waste, especially when taken on a 3rd down when you're up 14 and it's a critical moment.... People get a little too into the weeds about that. Even like complaining about our 2min drive before half. Like We had control of the clock imo. I didn't really see a problem much with how we used it. And Most of last season we were very aggressive with 4th down decision making even knowing we had Borregales.... Ultimately he does get too much into a conservative shell of "just hold on"...
Point 2, I mean yeah, We'll see. Ultimately imo this is College Football. College Kicker always suck ****, and will miss 30 yarders when they shouldn't. It just is what it is. Play like you don't rely on them.
The 3rd concern is 100% where my main concern is. Yeah it was dominant last year. With Cam Ward, and we had a very explosive passing game (even if we weren't getting like 60 yard deep bombs). Beck hasn't had nearly as many big time throws as Cam over their careers. I think we NEED more explosive Runs. And last night was the antithesis of that..... If that's what we're gunna do I want the alignement to be more pistol and to be able to actually run Play Action off it....
What were your obeservations of OL opening/not opening up consistent interior run lanes? His approach is a bi product of what I said from day 1 going into the off-season last year. Day #1 post cam ward is guys just have to be aware why we shouldn't stress next seasons offense as long as we have a CAPABLE QB then next seasons offense will be a far heavier version of a possession offense. We'll be run heavy. Well week one we saw that come to fruition. We won't be so clear cut most weeks like we were this week. But this season knowing we expect a better defense will be more about time of possession and exerting our will. I e. RUN.
At SMU. They have a cupcake schedule with only Clemson being good before we play them. We play: UF, fsu, ND before SMU…then ClemsonI was on 247 and they had updated win probabilities for the remainder of the season. One that shocked me was were are barely better than a coin flip for SMU. Any insight there?
Yeah I posted it a little bit as a joke from all the we will be more efficient with Beck stuffI think im less concerned about 3rd down conversions and more concerned about how quick we get to 3rd down
Last year thru like 4 or 5 games we were converting 3rd downs over 75% of the time, that **** wont happen again
Of course we don’t have cam but martinez was automatic on short yard conversions. Like i don’t remember not converting one with him, need someone to step up there
We were out of timeouts with 6 minutes left in the first half and we used our first time out during the first punt because that what Mario does just about every game.I keep seeing Dawson, Dawson, Dawson... and while I agree the play calling needs variety, I have a bit of a hard timing buying that Dawson went from "end this ************ right now" guy to milk the clock up 2 scores while dominating guy. Alternatively, we have a head coach who is built that way. And the offense and defense went play not to lose at the same time. Unlikely the head coach had nothing to do with it.

The DC stated in his interview that the late bust was on the safety. Looks like the LB was supposed to pass off the TE. Instead Toure and the safety both moved up to the RB (or whomever was in the middle), leaving the TE wide open.I think the Notre Dame secondary is solid. And we did a really good job moving the ball
Penalties sucked but I also think we got the shaft on a couple.of no calls
I feel like we wanted to make sure Love didnt beat us, and we did that. Our coverage wasnt poor, aside from Toures one bust. However I really like his physicality
Defensively I thought we looked much more physical as a whole than anything I saw last year.
We have some dogs on that side of the ball.
And Marry Brown is a dude. Loved how he handled his role in that game
It looked to me like Carr stepped up into the pocket and looked was going to run and Toure bit on that, Carr stepped back and homie was uncovered. The DC stated in his interview that the late bust was on the safety. I think the safety was Thomas but I’m not sure.
The knock on Thomas was his coverage skills. Looks like he always wants to come forward.
Don't you do that! He might have some issues but he ain't Aaron Boones ***** ***. That guy clearly has Epstein file type dirt on hal steinbrenner. No way in **** he should have a jobI think it’s both. Agreed on the different looks and Dawson needs to adapt. Similarly Mario needs to adapt. No one is saying come out slinging for the sake of slinging, throw 3 incompletions and punt just to be “fun”. The conservative mindset blew a 21-7 lead, and the overall feel for the game, clock, etc, is a work in progress - a little deep into his career.
But like with the Yankees, he’s our Aaron Boone so just win.
The reality is a mobile QB gives every team fits. Those guys are always going to get some cheap yards and conversions. You need to win 1st and 2nd down and keep the opposing team in 3rd and long not 3rd and 4 or less.Toney looked good on this role, but as a freshman and the word being out, can he keep up as the third down go to guy? ND him a priority later in the game and third downs became iffy it was 3&5 or longer. Hopefully Lofton can add something to that as the season goes along.
Defensively, I’m worried a mobile QB will give us fits. I’m not saying FSU is scaring me. But we had an extremely difficult time with the draw action. Maybe it’s because it wasn’t practiced since no one expected it from this kid. Seemed like the defensive staff game planned for a four man rush to work and ND countered it with a fair amount of success.
exactly what kick was ugly? The chip shot that was dead center? Or the 49-yarder that would have been good from 60 in the rain, wet grass, already ****** snap, for the win vs the #6 team/CFP finalist/one of our greatest rivals? And you can't say Mario game flow decisions lol…Those aren't going anywhere.
There was so much to like with Toney, C.Brown/Fletcher, a dominant defensive line ,etc...but here are a few things that caught my eye that weren't quite up to snuff yet. And please don't say I'm being a negative, it's just a topic for discussion, and it was a knock out performance as far as game 1s go…Those can at times be very, very sloppy, and we looked mostly great.
1. Safety play…I think it's still a question. Better than Jaden Harris no doubt, but that isn't the bar. Poyser has time to improve no doubt, but I thought the writers crowned him a little early this offseason after some success at CUSA, and I'm still concerned now. He didn't have a great night, and while I think Thomas can definitely give us snaps in the box he is what he is, and really fell asleep on the first Irish TD. I'm hoping Day, Pruitt, or Fitz can keep the heat on Poyser or get some snaps, because imo Poyser was mediocre (again it was game #1, I'm still optimistic with him)
2. LB (especially Toure) in coverage. I like a lot about our LB crew. But I really think we need Pruitt (0 snaps?) on the field in obvious passing situations. Let's just say that breakdown which basically blew the lead and could have blown the game for us…Wasn't the first time Toure looked lost in coverage to me. If he is on the field 3rd and long or against a heavy passing team, he needs to be blitzing or put Pruitt (0 snaps) in the game. That being said, Toure is very physical against he run and definitely had his moments in that aspect.
3. Kicking game…Obviously. One of those makes was ugly and the kid has not had a good career with FGs. Great to see him win the game though no doubt. On the plus side Joyce continues to develop and looked good.
4. Depth at nickle…K.Scott was one of the best players on both teams on the field last night and the best in our back 7. It's a little strange to me that Isaiah Taylor and a walk-on were behind him on the depth chart. Hope this is just CMC being vague or rewarding some good practice habits. Was hoping Brantley (0 snaps, is clearly #5 at CB) or Day, Ewald, etc…Could provide some depth here should Scott go down with injury. Just nitpicking I guess…And who knows maybe Taylor won the backup fair and square and is capable.
5. Not to jump on wagon or sound cliche…But the stupid *** penalties and timeouts. A delay of game out of halftime??? While I watched our QB and RB do a secret handshaking before they lined up?
I think everything else is nitpicking, and I really believe Trader will give the WRs a jolt. We aren't one of the nation's best WR group at the moment, but I think the stuff above is bigger concerns. Bell got beat a couple times and doesn't look dominant just yet, etc…TE wasn't involved much, but I think will be as the weeks progress. Lofton did catch a big pass when called upon and blocked all night. But we are pretty **** good area and a dangerous team, those are just some items that caught my eye.
Again yes he has influence in the overall game plan. The scheme. But that isn't the issue. Playing conservative with a young wr unit against a very aggressive defense isn't the issue. It's the exact play calling in that scheme. We ran the same 4 run plays all night and we ran them in the same exact scenarios over and over again. Feel free to run in those same scenarios. Just don't call the same exact run play to the same exact spot. VARIETY. that's allFrom my understanding, Mirabal and Mario have their “influence” in the run scheme. You would know more than I do in that department but this scheme is going to catch up to haunt us against the big boys should we make it to the playoffs. It’s fine against the mid tier ACC teams but even then it limits your offense’s ability to have the most success possible. Opponents know what we are doing and we aren’t catching them off guard with these repeated dive’s.
We can bully and outsmart opponents at the same time.
