The hard truth is that when T. Will took the UCF job our LB recruiting was done for. We tried to convince ourselves otherwise with the addition of Aristide who is by all accounts an excellent recruiter and an up and coming coach. Im sure coach Aristide will win his share of recruiting battles but the bottom line is who is going to coach them up once they get here? Patke? Aristide? We upgraded our defensive coaching staff considerably but we cant lose sight of the fact that we need to continue upgrading it before it is at the level we need it to be.

Coach Simpson was a huge upgrade as a coach but his recruiting ability is a work in progress and at this point unproven. T. Rob was a gargantuan upgrade over Rumph and Banda both as a coach and as a recruiter. DVD is young and unproven as a coach but with good upside who is also a very good young recruiter. Bob Shoop was a huge upgrade as an analyst as he is an experienced and successful DC but he is not in a position to coach players or recruit. Shoop is strictly X's and O's for this year at least and he should be a very valuable addition in that role as a schemer and game planner. Ishmael Aristide is an up and coming young coach with a great track record as a recruiter but he is young and inexperienced as a coach. That leaves us with Jonathan Patke who is also young and inexperienced as both a coach and a recruiter.

We need to add at least one more experienced position coach on defense preferably at LB and another star recruiter. Eventually Diaz will relinquish the DC position but not until he finds a worthwhile replacement. A splash hire at DC plus the additions above or some combination thereof would do this team wonders on the defensive side of the ball both in coaching and recruiting. I like where we are now especially compared to where we have been but we are not done yet. Not if we truly want to compete with the big boys for the elite players.

This is why I think giving T-Rob a co-dc title (with someone above him as dc) might be a good idea. He can be part of the recruiting for all high-end defensive targets regardless of position, and be able to say he will be coaching them too as co-dc.

Could be the plan moving forward. Let him teach DVD for a year and take him under his wing. Then next year, make him Co-DC and bump DVD up to secondary coach officially.

Titles are for marketing and egos. No one's role will actually change. Maybe T-Rob will help the DC a little, but he would still coach DB's. DVD is fine as CB coach for a while.
