defensive recruiting

Don't say defensive recruiting when it's just another DT thread. We've recruited well on the edges, linebacker, and the secondary.

DT and LB were my questions along with the overall quality from offense compared to defense.

I understand but I don't necessarily agree. It's more DT recruiting failure threads but I'm not trying to be a **** about it. The thing most frustrating about our LB recruiting is it's been really good actually, but the guys just can't stay in the game. We used to joke about wanting goons on this team and we have definitely found a ton of LBs like it. Doesn't do any good to have a "goon" if he gets kicked out of school.

Appreciate you not being a **** about it first of all. DT failure is certainly worse than our LB failure and there is no question about it. In reference to the "goons" not being able to stay in the game, that is part of the recruiting process. Now some actions unpredictable like Figs and Blue but EJ had a checkered past and we still took him for example. Since Miami has no integrated a very strict discipline policy unlike other schools it has to change the recruiting approach along with the policy. All in all I think Hurlie now recruiting LB's is a plus as he is a good recruiter and is now on the defensive side of the ball where her belongs and will only help us with the LB's

Wilfork played at Santaluces. Lantana-Boynton Beach-Lake Worth area in Palm Beach. Watched him play some home games for the Chiefs. Current recruit Langham played for the Chiefs.

When I lived in south Florida, and especially when I was in HS, a lot of these towns and schools didn't exist. Of course, that was a long time ago.

Good post and I agree. It's tough to look at our roster and think about what our D would look like with EJ, Figetron, Gabe Terry.....guys like that. Just reckless guys on and off the field. Unfortunately it's so hard to find guys like Flowers for instance. Kid is soft spoken and reserved but then acts like an animal when he puts his helmet on. It's really the area where the staff needs to figure those things out by sitting in the living rooms. Not that I'm blaming them for the **** Figs and Blue pulled. Just sometimes there's so much more to it than us fans are willing to recognize.

We taught everyone the value of DTs and they learned. Now we can't find them, plus with a 3-4 what we need is NTs and they are even harder to find. The shortage of DTs preceded Golden. 2014 class looks like fist one with some shots.

Not many solid DT's in sofla.

Last 2 years I count

Jaynard Bostwick
Khairi Clark
Travonte Valentine
Keith Bryant
Maquedious Bain
Monty Nelson
Anthony Moten
Edgar Cerenord

None of those guys have done a thing yet. So they wouldn't have helped us yet either. And a few of them are almost sure busts.

It's a very tough position to accurately recruit because most HS DTs are big fat lazy kids who got by in HS by being bigger and stronger than everyone around them. You don't know how those mostly lazy fat kids are going to react when they get to college and have to work hard and come to the realization that they won't get by pushing around 230 pound OL like they did in HS.

Look at a guy like Courtel. Low rated guy. Huge motor and chip on his shoulder. I'd take him 10 out of 10 times over almost anyone on your list.

We need to find guys just like that going forward.

I had hoped that UM would recruit under the radar a 2015 NT Marshall Robinson from Mars, PA who at 6'4" 330lbs as a junior was very strong at the point of attack even with double teams. He also very mobile in side a 20 yd area, which is crucial for inside out pursuit support from the NT/DT position.

Older thread about Robinson

Robinson's Jr Yr highlights

But unfortunately now it seems Marshall Robinson is tipping the scales at 390lbs which will definitely diminish the former two time all state / league players performance this season and his chance for major FBS offers unless he can lose the added weight by at the latests mid season.

Excessive bad weight gain has inherently been an issue with dlinemen, but this is especially the case with Nose Tackle types, an this has to be taken into account when recruiting these big bodied individuals. Case in point current UM Juco's Wyche and Heurtelou who both reported to miami out of shape to the point of almost needeing a redhirt to adjust. But both are working hard to get into shape and play significant defensive roles this season.

Monty Nelson was the best DT in the Tri county area. He told me when he was a SR that miami was recruiting him at the 13th player at his position and thats when he basically was not concerned with anything miami. Very soft spoken guy Maybe didnt go to as many combines to get enough "recognition" but he is a legit 6'4 benching 400+ his senior year. Parents would have loved for him to stay home with no grade concerns. Its funny thinking how miami recruited at plantation everyone knew in 09 josh robinson was better than brandon mcgee but they took mcgee (could have had both) in 2011 recruited jeremy cash and not ryan shazier (Cash is an All-ACC in his own right but cmon shazier ran a 4.4 anytime he ran a 40) But ryans parents was big on him being close to home (hence the Florida commitment) Im not saying that recruiting players from plantation would have solved all of our problems but every player i just mentioned are going to take snaps in the NFL and only 2 had offers

I liked Nelson alot an thought he would be a good fit in the scheme UM runs. This year UM is a good position with a few quality NT/DT types from high school an should be a good position to land two more for the 2015 class.

Go Canes

You guys do realize that all coaches are "responsible" for recruiting a region/area/school right? They have geographical areas and generally the main recruiters aren't necessarily their position/coordinator.

For instance.....Coley could be recruiting a DT and Donofrio a RB......that's just the way things shake out.

After the kickoff and the Seminoles get the ball back, Jameis Winston was sacked and he fumbled the ball and the Wolfpack’s Monty Nelson dove on it at the Florida State 22 yard line. Nelson was more excited than most when he recovered the ball because he wanted to go to Florida State out of high school and they didn’t recruit him. North Carolina State was lucky that the Seminoles did not recruit Nelson and he has been good for them
