This is just a question I’m interested in hearing everybody’s response on. Especially any other coaches in the forum. I coach at a small 2A school in Alabama.

So we had the sample of Guidry and his defense. Now, we have Hetherman and his defense.

Why do you guys think Guidry’s defense was so abysmal? His scheme and the complexity of it or was Guidry just not a good connect for the guys?

Like I said this is purely for discussion and you guys opinion. I am a defensive guy so these discussions are interesting to me.
 
The secondary personnel was horrible. After the season mario took blame for that. Its usually a breakdown of everything when you’re that bad too.

Guidry wasn’t the greatest but its hard to overcome bad players, he tried everything coverage wise. Only big issue i had with him was his usage of the front7, especially the front 4 with all the stunts and slanting.

I don’t think he married that together well with the secondary. He would leave the edge of our defense open or undermanned

I do always remember thinking how badly we’d be out leveraged on the edge. Also, as mentioned above we are much more sound personnel wise now.

Yeah the linebacker play was not good at all. I was actually at GT when they upset us. They were playing with an injured Haynes King and would literally sub him out on obvious passing downs and we’d still get gashed. 😅

His Safeties sometimes ran in the wrong direction. Never quite seen something like that. If the other team shifted or ran motion, the entire defensive call collapsed. Shocking.

Seemed like he didn’t know how to call a game when he didn’t have the offense off schedule too

Yup. We were doomed pre snap way too often for my liking. Out leveraged, handling motion, interior stunts on obvious running downs, etc

Golesh at USF exposed Guidry for all to see. It was all downhill after that. Darryl Porter is still chasing around that white slot as we speak
 
It was alot of things, for one both his safeties left early to NFL and the staff didnt seem to care that there was a void. And I dont know if it was his "golly its all good" personality he never fought to get more talent (Hetherman saw what we had in spring practice and was like yea this aint gonna work, went and got Keionte Scott, Jakobe Thomas, and Mohammed Toure all after spring, imagine our D without those guys, they were the Vet hammers on backend of last year defense)

We spent ALL that offseason on this message board saying we NEEEEEEEDED more talent on backend but that did not seem to be the feeling in coral gables, maybe because HC is an oline guy and our DC was just too cool to bang on table for more talent, there was negligence to the position and we wasted the greatest modern day QB miami has had and special offense to give ourselves a chance, we put an APB nationwide for a RB and got Martinez post spring but there was nothing for DB..

So we are thin there and then Damari goes down with Bain on defense game 1, so we lose arguably are two best defenders on defense and then you get into scheme which seemed broken.. I still remember being in Hard Rock that VT night game and they are moving ball with ease and Im like oh ****, the Defense is outleveraged with ease, yea they cant even do simple things right, scheme is broken. We could never get back on track after that..

I have most of it blocked out but I remember a particular play late in the season when True Freshman OJ was freaking out at basically every other player on defense because they were in the wrong spots after a team went in motion

Communication on back end
Tackling
Pre-snap adjustments

Jerry Gordon used to say something like align assign finish. Guidry went 0/3.

Once teams had a crew of QA guys analyzing tape it was obvious he was a G6/FCS DC.

If you’re rural 2A worry about align assign finish. Do a ton of formation rec. keep it simple. Rep tracking and tackling (rugby coaches are good for ideas)

Bring 5 every play. Own the A-gap as HS centers usually suck.

And unbelievably poor tackling and horrible secondary personnel took bad angles and couldn’t tackle or defend against the run

Can agree with most centers are trash. We still run old school 4-3 and heavy on formation recognition actually. You hit the nail on the high school stuff!

It felt like we were better vertically than laterally. I remember Guidry going so simple with the coverages that we played straight man and Duke just killed us with short routes with lateral movement. We were too stiff to keep up.

We were also bad at tackling. And bad at diagnosing plays. And bad at communicating. It seemed like Guidry tried to complicate things because there was little turnover from the year before, then he made everyone play slow and by the time he realized it, it was way too late.

All of what was said above. I am semi-retired coach now. ( I coach a small middle school prep team). Getting lined up and just playing hard solves about 80% of issues with defense at that level.
