DB Depth

Secondary has plenty of promise and potential. And they benefit from having a stout front 7. I see lots of turnovers created by this group, but there will be some growing pains (broken tackles and the occasional blown coverage). But overall, I think they will be fine, at least until the playoffs.

Talent isn’t there? Top 4 corners are certainly talented. Mish was a starter in a National Championship game. Patterson was a borderline 5 star. OJ is getting rave reviews. You’re an idiot
Powell and porter are proven talents. Everyone else is a youngin or not proven

Porter is solid.

Brown has the potential to be really good but he's still young.

Richard has the athletic makeup but he was up and down last year, imo, and needs some work, still.

Hill is a wild card. Film looks good - we'll see.

Not even counting OJ or Patterson at this point since I don't see them getting a lot of minutes this year. talented kids but unproven.

Maybe you should read what he said before commenting

Cool except that’s not what you said. You said “talent”. Are you saying Brown, Richards, Hill, Patterson and OJ aren’t talented?

I blieve Brown and Hill are competent players who will eventually be drafted, but Patterson is the only guy who I expect to be a truly high end player.

And he hasn't played a down of college football.

The DB room is average and cannot afford injuries.

Daryl Porter Jr
D'Yoni Hill
Are the NFL caliber Corners.

D Brown has to have an astronomical rise over the next 2 seasons to have anything higher than a Day 3 grade.
An astronomical rise? He started 3 or 4 games as a true freshman at corner. I’d say with his talent and already having been thrown into the fire so young he’s already on pace to be a day 2 pick.

We are 1 injury away from being scary thin at CB. Hope that Porter Hill or Brown don’t go down

How many of these guys do you think will get drafted within the first 4 rounds?

The answer to that question is the answer to your question.
Thats a difficult question to answer, for the 2 seniors, it's going to come down to the type of season they have. Both Porter and Powell have the measurable and enough good tape, from previous seasons, that a good 2024 season could put them in the top 4 rounds.

Zaquan Patterson highly regarded recruit listed as the #63 overall player in the nation, but he is just a true freshman that has to take well to coaching and show it on the field. If he does that in 3 years the sky is the limit.

Also when you look at the CB room as a whole, the way they respond to Chevis Jackson's coaching will play a big part in their draft position. Was Micah Abraham considered a draft prospect before Jackson became his coach at Marshell? Could Jackson have that same effect on Brown, Richard, Hill (Who he has already has coached into a very sold cover corner), Stafford, Frederique, and Mack? If Jackson can do with this group what he did at Kansas and Marshell, I can see at least 3 of those guys being top 4 round draft picks.

There are players in the DB room with the measurable to be drafted in the first 4 rounds, the question is can these coaches, Guidry and Jackson in particular, get them there.

I was going to say we had depth issues going into the season in the secondary in 2016 but man we had some talent. Jenkins, Corn Elder, Jaquan Johnson, Colbert, Redwine, Mike Jackson, Carter. All those guys played or are currently in the NFL. Young was another guy too but his career was cut short unfortunately.
No one on this board though Redwine or Mike Jackson were NFL caliber players before the start of that season and they became the first two Canes drafted in the 2019 draft.

What was your grade on Michael Jackson going into the 2017 season?

As a sophomore in the 2016 season, he played in 12 games had 7 tackles 1 pass breakup and 1 fumble recovery.

Did you think he would have a breakout year in 2017 putting up 43 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 5 pass breakups? Did you see a 4th round draft pick in him after that 2016 season?

I thought Redwine had potential but I really thought Jackson would transfer out after a couple of years.

I vividly remember people talking about Redwine's slow high school 40, I think he ran a 4.7 and how he would never be any good here.

Funny how development works and most importantly coaching continuity. That group of Redwine, Mike Jackson, and Jaquan Johnson, got to play for the same defensive coordinator in Danny Miaz from their sophomore season until they graduated.

If we are really being honest here, this is the only correct answer. Players can change so much over even one year based how well they take to coaching. I have seen players go from scrubs to stars just because they did the Forrest gump thing.
