Dawson

This is true, but a good coordinator should know his own personnel and his opponent and not leave them 1 on 1 against guys they can't cover. In the first half the D was generally good. But in the second half, Guidry had no answer for what their OC was doing to them, on the ground and through the air. We'll know more what Guidry is after Clemson, FSU, and Louisville.
Guidry had to choose go light and have them run the ball heavily or go big and stop the run. UNC came out second half, adjusted and took advantage of our lack of size (pause). When he adjusted Maye started showing why he’s a first round pick.

Until he gets some guys up front to go along with Bain, Wayne and Kelly it’s going to keep happening. Add in the fact that our best DL is an 18 year old kid and that’s the predicament we’re in. Same goes for the DBs.

Our QB threw for nearly 400 yards last night. It was 508-482 in total yards and we essentially scored 38 points if you count the Parrish fumble on the goal line. Blame the D if you want to point at any particular one unit but we produced enough last night to have a chance to win.
How many times can you stab yourself before you die? Self inflicted wounds two weeks in a row.

Dawson has been fine.

Few things I think he can improve:

1. Run creativity. More sweeps, counters, oline pulling and trapping, etc. Its been a very vanilla run game, much like lashlee.

2. More bombs to speed guys. That bomb to Breshard in desperation time. We need that mixed in routinely. Bombs to Smith, Harrell, Ray Ray, George. Get speed vertical.

3. Incorporate the TE more. This one is obvious.
Outside of #1 the other two are on TVD. That stuff is pretty much in most plays. Up to TVD to not target one guy 40% of the time

Let’s just stick to the facts:

- 7th in Total Offense
- 13th in points per game (37.7)
- 14th in Passing Offense
- 12th in Completion %
- 11th in Passing efficiency
- 17th in Time of possession
- 22nd in Sacks allowed
- 27th in Rushing Offense
- 28th in 3rd down conversion
- 34th in First downs

Have tremendous respect for your opinions, Memnon. Here are a few observations as to why there are some significant issues on Offense right now that need to be fixed fast or this season will end up being a poor one:

1) When the outcome of the UNC game was really going to be determined (3rd qtr & 1st half of the 4th qtr), the Offense was too predictable, didn’t produce much & made mistakes. A lot of those yds produced by our O last night came when the game was already well out of reach. The stats in the crucial 3rd qtr were poor;

2) A lot of those stats were generated against weak teams. Everyone rags on the ACC, but the truth is it’s actually really tough to go through the ACC slate unscathed. Even Duke has become a seriously tough out. Virtually any team in the ACC can beat any other team on any given night (especially if there are multiple turnovers, dumb penalties at the wrong time etc). Even BC gave FSU a serious scare;

3) The O hasn’t been nearly as crisp the last two games as it was in the 1st 4 games. That is troubling. The lack of diversity in the offense (it’s basically run between the tackles & throw to the 3 WRs (especially X), means it’s now far too predictable. There’s now film on what Dawson is going to do on O at Miami. I like Dawson as an OC (big upgrade over last yr’s OC) but he should be giving opponents fits with a diverse offense that puts speed in space & is multiple. By not targeting the TEs more & the RBs in the passing game, it’s making the job of defending us infinitely easier. DCs can basically commit greater resources to defending our WRs (which makes their job harder) and a “two trick pony” will start to falter. Have we thrown a wheel route to CJ? Run him outside the tackles. Run a reverse to Harrell? We’ve done none of that. The serious lack of production in the 2nd half (while the outcome was still in doubt), is a trouble sign. Simply cannot keep doing the same two things over & over the rest of the season and expect a good outcome. It’s far too predictable;

4) Won’t win in the ACC with multiple turnovers. The RBs need to have two hands on the ball on critical downs. Parrish has been so dependable for us to date but that was a huge fumble last night. Harris should also have been right in front of Chaney at the end of the GT game preaching two hands on the ball & not to fight for extra yardage in that situation. The INTs are also starting to really pile up (because the O has become predictable & we’re now playing better teams with better coaching & TVD has got to get more players not named X involved). Can’t keep going back to the same well over & over and expect that to work out. Doing that also makes X’s job infinitely harder;

5) We have home run threats that we’re barely using. CJ has ridiculous speed. It popped off the screen in the few plays he’s had. I get that he’s likely not able to withstand 20+ carries per game (especially between the tackles) but he can be used for 5-10 plays a game the same way that his namesake was used in the NFL (where he was an absolute superstar) & Reggie Bush & Duke Johnson we’re used in the pros. Have him run outside the tackles, throw him a wheel route, screen plays, toss sweeps etc. You could also use Harrell by literally putting the ball in his hands & letting him run. Also, send him deep early in games (to loosen up the D) & when nothing else is working. Worst case scenario, you throw an INT 40-50 yds down the field (basically the equivalent of a punt especially on 3rd down). Best case, he houses a few & the D then has to adjust to that opening everything else up;

6) TVD should spend far more time in practice throwing to the TEs & RBs. He then needs to make better decisions in games & use them heavily instead of forcing balls into coverage. This one adjustment — which should be very doable if it’s made a point of emphasis — would completely change the Offense & make it multiple. It will also limit the number of INTs thrown;

7) We need to use the TEs more in the red zone. Go big. Split TEs out & give TVD some big targets to throw at. We could change our efficiency in the red zone significantly by using this strategy. Red zone efficiency needs to improve. Dorsey to Shockey (against FSU & Nebraska) seems like a distant memory at this point. It’s a very effective strategy. We badly need Arroyo back but Riley also needs more targets;

8) More Brashard Smth please. He has really developed this season. Major props to him. Dude is becoming a dawg. The “fight” in him is evident. His return against A&M was a game changer & he’s come close to busting some big gainers in his limited opps. Needs more targets. Deserves more targets. We need more explosive plays on O to limit our dependence on a sustained high level of execution play after play. Brashard offers that potential; and

9) Give TVD time in games to regain his composure. Take some pressure off him. Jacurri has 4 games he can play w/out burning his redshirt. Physically, he’s a monster. Put him in for a series or two if things aren’t going well. Run him out of the wildcat & give the D something different to contend with. I also think Emory is poised & intelligent & absolutely can handle a series or two, if called upon. Put him in to spell TVD & let him play (don’t handcuff him). I’m confident he would distribute the ball effectively to the playmakers & let them do their thing. At minimum, that could let TVD settle down & take some pressure off him when things aren’t going well (instead of letting things spiral).

In summary, those stats will start nosediving hard if we don’t become more diverse on offense. The most important stat is W-L and that has already gone from 4-0 to 4-2. We need to win this year. It’s crucial to the trajectory of the Mario Cristobal era.

I pointed out most of which you said in my recap. ☝🏽

I’m not arguing that the Offense is perfect & doesn’t need improvements, but my point in sticking with the facts is to highlight & keep in perspective where the Offense actually is vs where people are acting as if it is.

The Offense has been good enough for us to be 5-1, the only game where the Offense looked like complete sh*t was oddly enough against GTech.

People are placing a huge emphasis on the Offense & seemingly giving the Defense a pass, but the fact is, the Defense gave up over 500 yards yesterday. If Diaz/Baker/Steele did that people would be up in arms over it & rightly so. So lets not change the criteria for a guy we like because Guidry is mostly being let off the hook for last night.

Dawson is not the problem. YES the Offense has struggled & they without question need to play better, but lets not act like they’re as bad as people are making them out to be. The evidence states otherwise.

A lot of good points here, most of which boil down to Dawson being a not bad, but not sophisticated, high-level OC.

I’d say he’s another Lashlee…. He’s fine but definitely leaves some areas lacking. Lashlees run scheme was fugging terrible if he didn’t have a good read option QB in King… while Dawson seems to have a better plan on the running game it seems like we fail to scheme other players open other than the big 3 at WR…

Not a lot of RB wheel routes…nothing for the TEs especially in the redzone

Not sure its totally fair to judge Dawson off of him with TVD because TVD has shown the same flaws with 3 oc's so far.
Having 3 OC’s in 3 years is a net negative. Not excusing TVD’s flaws but having to learn a new offense every year is difficult at best.

Imo. Missing extra creativeness. As per Phins. We have young speed. Dont use it. Dont use TE’s. We have a stud FR TE. Dont Use him. We still run a dive up the middle following big plays?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Why not do some creative sweep, reverse, etc…. In the end, he has highly recruited players that hes not using.

I don’t think Dawson is the problem at all.
I see lots of potential in this offense with the right QB and some tweaks (run outside the tackle box, a few more routes for the TE, etc).

Now we got 2 losses, I would LOVE to see Emory get one series a half as part of a rotation. I think we (and potential recruits and transfers) need to see what we have in him.

That said, what’s the likelihood TVD and X coming back next year? I think both have the option to come back, yes?

I think the offense as a whole is fine, but the basic counting stats severely overrate it. The schedule has been weak. Again the A&M game being the anomaly (they aren’t good anyway), they haven’t performed against the other P5 opponents. Take away garbage time and you land around 350ish total yards and 17 points. Same with GT.

Same with the defense. Numbers are out of proportion bc of the schedule.

What is everyone’s assessment of Dawson half way through the season, his improved the offense but I wasn’t a fan of the hire originally still not a fan for the hire would like to see him mix the tempo up no change up to keep the defense on there toes.
Mine is still positive but I do think he’s looking to Lashleeish in the run game just sending RBs up the middle the last 2 games for some reason. That is my one and only problem with him to date. It’s almost like a throw away down

Guidry loves running double 3T UNC adjusted to it in 2nd half and kept gashing is up the middle. Clemson loves the middle runs hope he adjusts or we are dead next week
