Darren Heitner

Seems like he’s really been an advocate for the athlete first and foremost. Shouts out Miami in this statement

Well he has been active at the roots of Florida NIL law as he assisted to write the laws for the State of Florida. When you see an athlete with an NIL issue and his representative is Heitner you know the kid is serious.

You also know that Heitner believes you have a good case. My nephew consulted with him about trying to get an extra year to play college basketball and Heitner did not think they could win. And I give him credit for that because he did not take their money and gave an honest opinion. That is how good lawyers operate.

Not disputing that Darren Heitner, Esq. does a fine job representing athletes in current times. Not disputing that Miami hasn't benefitted a ton from his guidance and expertise on this uncharted territory. Not disputing that we haven't landed players directly because of his counsel. Also not disputing anything he said is not factually true. There's just something about reading an over the top, look at me while I pat myself on the back, self-aggrandizing message that never quite sits right with me. If he's THAT good, why the need to make a tweet about it? Based on the 30+ schools he's worked with, it's already known by those who need to know.

Episode 107, the most recent.

for those who are really interested in all of this. Heitner is a guest and they go into NIL, Transfer portal, transferring, etc. in depth.
They also touch on the basketball issue going on right now.

Just personal marketing like everyone does with social media in 2026

He just did an ad for himself that’s gonna generate a stupid ROI that cost him nothing and about 10 seconds

But I’ll put on my old man cap and scream at the ocean with you, brother

I generally agree with you. I never advertise as a lawyer and have always felt that word of mouth is the best marketing possible (and it has proven to be true). BUT, Heitner is effectively marketing himself through social media as you know. I don’t care for it, but I can understand why he’s doing it. He’s basically telling the next person who needs an attorney to come to him.

It’s basically a billboard. Just as annoying and ubiquitous as lawyers on billboards telling you that they have won ___ millions for their client. To me they are all eyesores.

I get it. I also align my business advertising with what you stated. It is what it is.

Think my favorite part of offseason is the uninformed, troglodycious antipathy toward Miami but also this guy & the athletes themselves by Duke & other teams fans.

I was told Duke would eat Mensah & Miamis lunch & that Heitner is a grifter.*

Ignorant *** losers, cant wait to light their teams up on the field in 2026.

* Dont have to like the NIL situation to at least not be an ignorant *******.

I know I'm obviously biased, and @AtlAtty is right that he is advertising, but Heitner is also doing one more crucial thing here. He's stressing that these contracts are incredibly one-sided, these kids are at a huge disadvantage, and they MUST review these agreements with an attorney before they sign them or risk being taken advantage of by the schools. He's laid out the key points for why they should be concerned about the unbalanced power dynamic and has armed them with enough information to push back and start thinking for themselves.

Maybe they call him, or maybe they find their own attorney. Doesn't really matter, since as the market continues to grow, he isn't going to be able to handle every athlete anyway unless he decides to expand his firm. So what's most important is he continues to put himself out there as a thought leader who leads the NIL industry, while doing his best to help these kids and their families.

I’ve had plenty of opportunities to chat with lawyers through the years - sometimes on my dime, sometimes not. I’ve been to plenty of Alumni Association gatherings that always seem to be overloaded with lawyer representation (and financial planners - IYKYK). I find it almost fascinating to see them in action, specifically as they enter their echo chambers and speak in their jargon. The same can be said of doctors, engineers, construction dudes, etc. I mention all that as a backdrop for this - I think many folks lose sight of how they are received and perceived by those outside of their ecosystems. My original Homer Simpson comment was a (kinda?) funny way to bring this to light.

When I began my real career in sales, I always wondered why non-salespeople would make comments about how annoying salespeople are. Back then I was borderline offended by it. As my career unfolded and I hit management, upper management, then ownership, I CLEARLY saw why people called salespeople douche bags… because, well, they are! Obv not all. Obv there are times when sales folks really do bring valuable info to the party for buyers. Lastly, on a personal level, I’ve made significant efforts in real life to live a humble quiet life where I’m just a guy living his life. I don’t want to be famous. I don’t want to be well-known. I want to give back and help when I can and I want to do so quietly, without fanfare, and anonymously on occasion as well. That’s just me. Doesn’t make me right, wrong, better or worse. It’s just who I am. So yeah, I get slightly triggered when I see self-aggrandizing commentary. Usually I keep it to myself and keep on scrolling. This is CiS though and I have a reputation to uphold. :)
