Damon Wilson 2.0

I love the optimism on this thread and certainly hope its proven accurate, but the idea that we lose Bain and Mesidor and people think that we won't take a step back on the line is insane to me. And Bain, as high as he may go, will be severely missed. We may still be very good but that is a duo unlike anything we've had in decades.
We will take a step back at DE. /Without question losing 2 1st round picks will make that inevitable.

BUT we should be even better at DT. Combine improvement at DT with a slight drop off (hopefully) at DE, and the overall Dline may be as good as this year.

We are going back to the 1980’s when Jerome Brown, Jimmie Jones, Cortez Kennedy and Russell Maryland gave Miami the best DT’s for a decade. Amazing fact is that Jimmie Jones lost his starting spot at UM, was still drafted by the Cowboys and was very impactful in their Super Bowl wins in the early 90’s.

Yes. Like Mesidor would be a 1st round pick if not for his injuries and age. I think we will have a great DL next year (assuming Wilson transfers here), but it's ludicrous to think that the unit will be better after losing two 1st round (perhaps even top half of the 1st round) talent at End, while also likely being less stout against the run with the third DT.
Mesidor age being a knock is so funny to me. Guys are not staying with the same team their whole career. You aren’t drafting a guy in first round with some guarantee he will be there 10 years. If you can get 3 great years out of a 1st round player you are doing good. For example Parsons and Phillips. Mesidor will easily give a team 3 great years. So you might as well grab him while you can. It’s a win now league. Not win in 5 years.

I can’t believe @WaterburyCane sent you a pic!

the step back will occur at DE but the hope is that Moten and Scott are the DT version of 3 and 4, which is not wishful thinking. By the end of the season, Moten was on the same level as Bain and Mesidor. Scott made significant improvement as a sophomore as well.

If you add Wilson, you then have a DE with 1st round potential plus 3rd yr. Lightfoot and Blount and all the other blue chippers Mario brought in that have been in the program for a bit now.

If Moten returns and you add Wilson, very reasonable to say next years defensive line would also have 2 first round talents. And this does not even factor any ascension from Scott, Lightfoot, and Blount in their junior years.

The issue is probably not talent related imo. Its that Bain and Mesidor were such forces against the run. Teams could hardly get outside. The pass rush will probably be fine but you have to force the opposition into throwing situations by stopping the run. Players takes jumps. A player like Blount may become a absolute monster as a Junior as well as some others. But I wouldn't expect just no drop off.

The google AI thing tells me that the average career length for a 1st round pick is 9.3 years vs. 3.3 years for all players (believe this is the source: https://runrepeat.com/nfl-player-career-length). 45% of 1st round Edges resigned with the team that drafted them from 2009-18 (https://www.joebucsfan.com/2023/05/...aft-picks-getting-second-contracts-with-team/). It's not clear from that data whether "bust" means a 1st round pick who didn't sign a second contract with anyone or just a 1st round pick who signed a second contract with a different team. After the 2020 CBA, teams now can exercise a 5th year option on 1st round picks, but there isn't data on whether 5th year exercised 1st round picks are more likely or not to resign with the team that drafted them.

So, I'm assuming the argument goes that: if a 1st round pick is good, they are more likely than not to come to terms on a second contract with the team that drafted them than another team. If you're drafting a guy in the 1st round who is age 22 or 23 in his first year he'd be in his age 27/28 season the first year of his second deal.

Mesidor will be 25.5 when the 2026 NFL season starts, so he would be 30.5 at the start of his second contract (assuming the team picks up the 5th year option if he were a 1st round pick. The expected production on his second contract is going to be much less than from a similarly talented player who is age 22/23 the first year he plays.

The thing I wonder about is now that there is the 5th year option is whether NFL teams would be better off drafting older players higher than before, because they could potentially have less dead money on the second contract. Like, I imagine a lot of the younger guys who are good during their first contract fall off a cliff at some point during their second contract and are cut. With Mesidor you could draft him 1st round, get 5 years from him at the rookie scale, then just franchise him for a year or two. After that he's likely going to be too old to be a standout NFL player.

I think both can be true. Take a step back losing Bain and Mesidor but still being a top 5 line if the young bucks play like anticipated. NOBODY is replacing Bain but if they play up to their potential next year and avoid injuries they can absolutely establish themselves as a dominant unit.

isn't it fair to assume we should have known by now if we got him? with today being last day for add/drop?

Didn’t they extend the deadline to Friday or was that just something being mentioned hypothetically?
