Damon Wilson 2.0

Not sure I agree. It will certainly look “different” and the game-wrecking ability Bain and Messidor brought will definitely be reduced, but we’ll probably be more stout on the interior with better inside pass rush.

If Wilson comes and assuming Moten stays, this is at least the best DL in the ACC by a country mile, and *might* be the best in the country.

Definitely need a nickel though and not sure what route we settle on there. Scott is going to be extremely difficult to replace. Frankly I don’t think he can be “replaced”, whoever takes the spot is going to be a downgrade of some measure.
I’m sure Scott will be a force next year too . He’s getting better and better just me watching the games .

We will obviously take a step back on the line. How big is tbd. If Moten leaves it’ll be a big step.

But with the linebackers being the same or better with improvement from toure and popo with another year in the system.

Then comes the secondary. Aside from nickel we should be improved. Everyone’s a year older at corner and Bryce a potential AA candidate. Poyser needs work on his angles. But he’s got serious potential. Jaboree will challenge

Need to find a nickel
It will look different but I do not think a step back is for certain. I actually think a step up is a possibility (assuming Moten returns). The elite DL recruiting class from a few years ago will now be Jrs. with plenty of experience.

Moten and Scott could realistically be the best DT duo in the country with Moten the single best DT out there. Impact wise, they could be the DT version of 3 & 4.

DE has a ton of potential as well if you add Wilson.

Totally agree on the nickel situation. Scott was special. Unique individual who can cover and tackle with instincts and has speed.

Selfishly I feel like damari brown can be an elite nickel and he should go there. He can cover, tackle with physicality and has speed

Moten isn’t leaving

My 2026 hot take is that Lightfoot ends up being a more impactful pass rusher than Bain, at least in terms of sacks. In the limited time he had this postseason, he was dominating reps and has the speed to bring the QB down when he tries to evade. It remains to be seen what he can do in the run game and obviously I would not expect him to be all around elite like Bain was.

But with Lightfoot, Wilson, Lowe, Moten, and Scott... I'm not worried about much besides maybe interior depth.

Moten is staying.

Senior Year Moten
Junior Year Scott
Junior Year Lightfoot
Redshirt Hayden Lowe
Damon Wilson
armondo blount

yeah that the potential to be a NASTY top -3 DL in the nation if not the outright top DL again.
Right back in the mix again best in the conference by a mile again with a easier schedule

As ridiculous as it may sound, Lightfoot can be all around elite like Bain...but in a different way. He has elite pass rush potential but also the fluidity to be useful in coverage, which we saw this season. Could be one of those rare players capable of an int and multiple sacks in the same game. His motor and 'want to' appears through the roof as well (seemed like he was all over the field every time he was in). He's got so much potential.

He's not the same archetype of a defender as 3 or 4. He has to be used differently and that may require tweaking the defense a bit (DE/OLB hybrid type).

We did that with him this year.

I love the optimism on this thread and certainly hope its proven accurate, but the idea that we lose Bain and Mesidor and people think that we won't take a step back on the line is insane to me. And Bain, as high as he may go, will be severely missed. We may still be very good but that is a duo unlike anything we've had in decades.

Yes. Like Mesidor would be a 1st round pick if not for his injuries and age. I think we will have a great DL next year (assuming Wilson transfers here), but it's ludicrous to think that the unit will be better after losing two 1st round (perhaps even top half of the 1st round) talent at End, while also likely being less stout against the run with the third DT.
