DAILY DEBATE: Who is our starting slot receiver this year?

Ideally you want your best route runner at the position. Ray Ray ran the worst routes I had ever seen in a college game vs Iowa St.
True, but doubt Mario starts a TF against ND on primetime national TV in his first game. I think Ray-Ray will start but Toney will get reps as well

I could totally see them limiting Toney’s snaps the first half of the season and breaking him in slowly, but as I said on here a few weeks back when people were predicting who would start at slot I think Toney will eventually take over and be the guy by the end of the year. He’s got the football I.Q., talent, athleticism, etc. to start right away, but his youth and lack of experience will cause them to be cautious early on.

Portal! I will keep saying, bring in 2 WR's, one a slot. Expand the WR rotation getting the young guys reps. If someone can prove on the field they can take the portal kids spot, great. Play the best man, proven. ND is the best team we play all season, game one. Unlike most, I don't believe we lean heavily on the run either. That isn't Dawson's O and I just think it looks different from Cam. Beck doesn't play hero ball. Beck isn't a game manager, either. He needs some more proven WR's. If they find 2 at the level they want outside and slot, they want that. Will this portal supply 2?

I know Carr didn't play much at all last year, but in the snaps he did play, was he ever in the slot? If he was, I missed it, edumacate me please.

I think the answer here is probably the obvious one, Ray Ray and Toney have the body types that traditionally man that spot and that closest mirror Restrepo. Lofton will be lined up in the slot at times in the spot that Arroyo manned, but when we're in 11, Lofton isn't playing the traditional slot role that Restrepo played almost exclusively.

And obviously none of us are super excited for anything Ray Ray has done to this point, so he obviously needs to show massive improvement or they need to find someone else to play that spot. I really don't like a true freshman there who should be a senior in High School, the slot in this offense is very nuanced and requires a good bit of feel, patience, and awareness.....3 things that incredibly young receivers rarely have.

Our best bet is the light comes on for Ray Ray and he plays like the Top 130 overall player he was recruited to be. I won't hold my breath on that, though. He's looked pretty stiff and very overwhelmed in the limited PT he's gotten thus far.
Exactly, and that puts us in a very difficult position. I just don't see Ray Ray breaking out as our slot WR. I think his best bet at this point is to move back to RB and carve out a utility role for himself. What that would consist of I have absolutely no clue.

Toney is a baller but a true freshman as is Upshaw. This is why someone suggested Carr. Carr might be a good fit at slot and spring is the time to experiment. It's not like the slot receiver is required to be 5'9"-5'10". Our coaches may want to think outside of the box here. They may move Jojo all around the formation including slot which could be intriguing.

The best option may be through the portal where we will be in a much better position to attract WR talent now that Beck is here with his rehab going well.

I think Upshaw gets on the field. He’s a bit of an afterthought but his floor is very high imo

Not sure if he’s a superstar down the road but he’s an early contributor candidate

It's not always bad. For every Sam Brown, Zalontae Hillery, Jaylin Alderman, Joshua Horton, Cody Brown, Jaden Harris, Jakai Clark, Thomas Davis, Jarren Williams, Marquez Ezzard, Jacurri Brown, Judd Anderson, Realus George, Isaiah Dunson there is a DeeJay Dallas, so let's not bury Luke Nickel just yet.
Add Josh Horton to the long list of busts at Miami from GA.

Stop recruiting the state of Georgia now god dammit now
