DAILY DEBATE: Who is our starting slot receiver this year?

It's not always bad. For every Sam Brown, Zalontae Hillery, Jaylin Alderman, Joshua Horton, Cody Brown, Jaden Harris, Jakai Clark, Thomas Davis, Jarren Williams, Marquez Ezzard, Jacurri Brown, Judd Anderson, Realus George, Isaiah Dunson there is a DeeJay Dallas, so let's not bury Luke Nickel just yet.

1a. Carr
1b. Lofton
2. Toney

Really think Ray Ray should move to the backfield and play more of a pass catching or outside the tackle RB. I get it, you have to be able to pass protect in our O tho.

I know Carr didn't play much at all last year, but in the snaps he did play, was he ever in the slot? If he was, I missed it, edumacate me please.

I think the answer here is probably the obvious one, Ray Ray and Toney have the body types that traditionally man that spot and that closest mirror Restrepo. Lofton will be lined up in the slot at times in the spot that Arroyo manned, but when we're in 11, Lofton isn't playing the traditional slot role that Restrepo played almost exclusively.

And obviously none of us are super excited for anything Ray Ray has done to this point, so he obviously needs to show massive improvement or they need to find someone else to play that spot. I really don't like a true freshman there who should be a senior in High School, the slot in this offense is very nuanced and requires a good bit of feel, patience, and awareness.....3 things that incredibly young receivers rarely have.

Our best bet is the light comes on for Ray Ray and he plays like the Top 130 overall player he was recruited to be. I won't hold my breath on that, though. He's looked pretty stiff and very overwhelmed in the limited PT he's gotten thus far.

Carr has made plays. All of these guys would be making more noise with someone like Ward. I don't see Carr as a slot, though. More of an outside guy.
Gotcha. Good to know! Kid was a beast in high school and a legit huge flip. Hoping for some legit hype from him this summer when we get rolling at full strength

This !!!!!

Ray Ray will start vs ND IMO, but Toney (and hopefully Carr) coming for that position sooner than later

Ideally you want your best route runner at the position. Ray Ray ran the worst routes I had ever seen in a college game vs Iowa St.

Ny Carr, I hope. He has another gear that Ray Ray & Toney don’t possess.

He needs to make a big jump though because he looked like a HS SR playing his first snaps in the bowl game, but I remember saying the same thing about Horton early on. He has time, let’s hope he takes advantage. If Toney, a kid who should still be in HS, comes in here and beats him out then good for Toney but God bless for 19.
I would hope him or Toney. Preferably Carr who had 10.4 speed coming out of high school. Toney should be playing period. Hopefully he can run all the routes and be used. All over the field.
