*Coach Kool Gone...headed to Alabama*

I posted this in the WEZ a few months ago. A reminder about his history in recruiting:

Out of all the 4-5 star DL commits from 2001-2015, Kul was the primary recruiter for only 1 (Andy Maple). That was the only commit at any position, listed 4-stars or higher, where he was the primary. Btw, there are zero listed 4-5star prospects TARGETS from Texas (his supposed assigned recruiting territory) that listed Kul as their primary recruiter. Some profiles, especially before 2012, don't list every single primary recruiter. I'm hopeful, but the available data is concerning.

The primary recruiters for every 4/5star DT/DEs COMMITS, during Kul's tenure at Missouri:

Andy Maples - Recruited by Craig Kuligowski

If you want the names of the primary recruiter for those 3 star beasts that he coached, well, here ya go:

Aldon Smith: Primary recruiter Andy Hill

Charles Harris (2-star): Primary recruiter Andy Hill

Shane Ray: Primary recruiter Andy Hill

Andy Hill is apparently the real deal. He landed 5-star DBG and other highly rated players to missouri.

Why I believe there is a lot more to the story.

See I dont know Patrick all I know from here is he can teach, so this dude can recruit Im guessing?

I mean...

His personality leads me to believe he could recruit well down here. I worked with him 2 years in a row at USF's big man camp and the dude is full of **** and vinegar. And I asked him back then about Miami and he basically said it was a dream job.

Yall gotta stop coming up with theories to make our L's feel better. Yall did it during recruiting and now yall are doing it with coaches.

No matter how you try to spin it, this sucks. He's regarded as one of the best DL coaches in the country. It's never good to lose a great coach.

And none of us know **** about his recruiting ability. Unless you were actually present during visits and phone calls then you have no clue. You can't just base your opinion off of who we signed and didn't sign. A lot more goes into recruiting than just a position coach's efforts. Stop trying to make this loss sting less by saying that he couldn't recruit. A **** DC or DB coach can be a reason you lose a DL recruit. I've seen it happen.

Let's just get KP and move on.

Look we would have been cool with him staying, however, there was a ton of frustration on here about the lack of his recruiting and lots of fans were calling for his head. Yes he is a great developer of players, but he can't recruit. We need a recruiter. He is leaving us almost in the same spot Williams left us at DB. Good thing we have the Florida kids that's come, he brought nothing from the areas where he was supposed to be strong.

KP is all Miami! Former classmate can do that thing. Get him in Lauderdale and maybe we can change that story.

Bama is multiple in the way they let their DL play. It all depends on situation. Regardless, if you can coach DL, you can coach DL.
Scheme doesn't make a difference.

I don’t follow Bama every game, but every time I happen to look, they’re in a 3-4, but I’m also aware they mix it up, but they’re primarily known as a 3-4, team, also, I already said: “a good D-line coach is adept at teaching/coaching several techniques and styles“ so like most people I’m aware he can adapt his teaching to the philosophy at hand.

I guess my point escaped which was his calling card was a relentless attacking style, which it won’t be at Bama.

You will know the answer based on how quickly Richt hires a new coach.

If it is quick he was planning on Coach K's departure or asked him to pursue other opportunities

If it takes time then he was blindsided.

I think Richt wanted an upgrade at the position from a recruiting standpoint. Coach K was an awful recruiter and I don't think it takes a genius to recruit Miami lineman. Just need an aggressive scheme.

If he (Richt) didn't know, he should have.

Kool deserves all the scorn for being a lazy and ineffective recruiter. What concerns me going forward though is how badly Diaz and ULTIMATELY Richt dropped the ball on the D-line the last two cycles. Richt NEEDS to know how much vigor his assistants are putting forth on the trail and if they're not meeting the standard, HE needs to rectify it. It appears like Richt just handed Diaz the keys to everything defense and Manny/Kool maybe didn't see eye to eye.

The days of blaming the assistants are done. Richt needs to get more involved in the "total program" or it will be his undoing. The warning signs are there.

Patrick had a ***** or two loose when he was at UM. I'll never forget the brawl in Boulder where he was out there with no helmet in the middle of it all.

Before that game, they were interviewing him about the thin air in Boulder and how UM might get gassed, and he said, "Thin air, no air, lots of air. Doesn't matter to me." The guy was a great UM character.

You're right.

from what i understand, he has been trying to get to the NFL for the past couple of years. Richt got his resignation when Kul thought he was getting the Bucs job. For about 24 hours, Kul was a coach without a team. He contacted Saban and this all came about. I don't expect Kul to be there more than a season or two. He's Jeff Stoutland 2.0

Sounds about right! Get us a hungry/aggressive coach!

Saban hired Kul because he wants the UM playbooks. He's preparing for the UM vs. Bama NC game in January. Seriously, this move is screaming lets weaken the enemy. Everyone sees that UM is on the verge of being back and unstoppable. 10 wins, the chain, Drizzy on campus for the top video in the world...people are taking notice.

Kool never lifted so much as a finger recruiting here and rested on his laurels far too often. I'll take a hungry recruiter with slightly less technical prowess any day over the apathy he exhibited.

It was the ***** thing to do. With RJ and Norton leaving plus Chad graduating he risks losing his credibility by the DL taking a step back. So what does he do? He gets out while he can and goes to a place where he collects an easy paycheck. Alabega’s name sells itself he doesn’t even have to recruit much if at all.

Kul better be careful he’s quickly becoming the Jedd Fisch of defensive coaches.
Like Jimbo

43 and 34 fronts can look like each other. All you have to do to make a 34 look like a 43 is slide the DL over a shade, then slide ttheLBs in the opposite direction.

But whether it's a 43 or 34 it doesn't matter. What's important is the philosophy - do they read and react or get upfield? Coach Kool is a get upfield kinda dude. Plus At Mizzou most of those great Dlineman he coached ended up playing in a 34 in the NFL, I'm pretty sure.

with UM ties that Bama hired. Saban has to keep the SoFl pipeline open for his success, while kicking us in the *** while he's doing so. We have to remain steadfast as a program to climb back to the mountain top. I predict if we ever get back up there Saban and Urban will both retire!

Might be the most overrated position coach in America. He is most certainly a good position coach, but we are looking at him through the lense of the last regime, which was embarrassingly awful.

Yes, we improved greatly from 2015 to 2016 and he made players out of two true sophomores in McIntosh and Norton. We saw no improvement in the defensive front from 2016 to 2017. We lose both guys to the NFL draft and we were scrambling for defensive tackles and Richt had to pull in Patke to try and bail Kul out. Shouldn't have been this hard to sign linemen. Got to believe this was a mutually agreed to resignation. I'm not sure that Richt attempted to talk him out of a resignation.

Give us Patrick or Rocker or Partridge and we get a more complete position coach and we aren't scrambling in recruiting. Still need somebody to counter Odell Haggins at FSU.
