Cleveland Reed hits the Portal

People on here are saying butch Barry wants lean athletic linemen but Wisconsin linemen are huge and I know all of those corn fed white boys don’t have quick feet and they just MASH dudes every weekend.

So he is leaving us out of spite of not starting because he is not good enough. Now he won’t play next yr either. I expect nothing good to happen to him in the future. Later bum

Listen my g, Reed is a bi product of a symptom that’s been plaguing this program. Reed ain’t the first player to bounce from us, and per another poster, supposedly more may follow.

So my issue at this point is why? Everyone can’t simply be a quitter, Chise. That’s not the answer for every player that bounces.

But to answer the last part of your post; u can’t say just recruit great talent and they’ll develop. We’ve had the best collection of talent, by far, in the Coastal, and top 3 in the ACC and what to show for it?

This is not a referendum against the coaches; Reed left, Bon voyage; but this transfer seems innately strange based upon timing.

SIAP, skimmed through but didn't see anyone mention the timing related to last season's most notable in season transfer Kelly Bryant.

Bryant transferred right around this time last year, after starting the first 4 games. But he saved himself the standard year of sitting out in a D1-to-D1 transfer, and is starting at Misery now. Here is a wiki quote regarding the situation...

"On September 25, 2018, after week 4 of the 2018 season, coach Dabo Swinney announced that freshman Trevor Lawrence would be the new starting quarterback for the Tigers.[7] As a result, Bryant decided to transfer. He maintained his final year of eligibility, despite starting 4 games of his senior year, due to a recent change in NCAA redshirt guidelines.[8]"

Not sure if someone else here is more familiar with the "recent change".

IMO you never take 3-4 guards. You recruit tackles and only a handful of high-end guards. The tackles that don't succeed outside can kick inside (Campbell).

If you recruit that many interior guys and miss on a tackle, you are screwed. It's the exact position we are currently in.
Thats a fair point. Still, out of 6 OL players, 2 get reps at T next year, 2 get reps at G, and 2 should redshirt.

Wasn’t he the weight lifting champ? Really don’t understand this decision in the middle of the season.
Was in the state finals and bench pressed 420, but in the clean and jerk an explosive lift made only 275 lbs. at weight of 340 pounds.

Manny mentioned at beginning of year "we are going to find out who's willing to work for it & who isn't" or some such wording. This is exactly what he was talking about as the coaches were already seeing what was unfolding in fall camp. Stars mean nothing.

Meanwhile guys on here want Antonio Alfano whose a freshman from bama in the portal. Is he soft?

He’s leaving for different reasons. Reed, a redshirt Freshman, is leaving because he can’t get on the field. That’s soft. ******* bust your *** and win that spot. Our OL sucks. If you can’t beat out those guys then transferring isn’t going to solve your problem.

Just seems like it happens to us more than other top schools, outside of vt. Man can we play a season, one season with 85 players!!! Not that it matters if they don’t get developed.

Serious question. What year has Miami ever played with 85 ships. Can probably count on your fingers when they have played with 80 or more.

This was a kid we were clamoring for, but now he’s trash? Could it possibly be our player development hasn’t been up to snuff? We were happy w this portal situation, but now this chit is coming back on us.

Get used to it. This is the new normal for college football. Its everyone's problem now including all the top teams.

Reed won’t be the first or last to leave. Clemson and Alabaga have guys leaving. It’s happening everywhere. I just can’t live like some of you guys do.

To each his own, but I can’t go through life taking a negative approach all the time. The U is in my blood and I love it too much to be so negative about it all the time. Fck Quitland Reed. Ive got no love or empathy for a punk who quits on his teammates midseason or a couple days before the season. It’s feeble and weak and I’ve got no place for guys like that. So fck him. This program will survive a 3rd team Guard with quitting in his blood.

I’ve said this before, but if you guys who follow the team as a hobby are so miserable with your hobby, then it might be time to find a new one. Life’s too short to be so miserable and negative about everything.

And forgive me if I don’t put any stock in the doomsday musings of some anonymous guy calling himself 99cane who seems like a jilted guy.

Yup... With his mindset he would have been a liability if he'd come in. Put a guy like Murphy in instead (sort of kidding.)

So let me get this str8; u think our player development have been on par? F Reed for a min, b/c Reed is another casualty of the proverbial, “he suck, that’s y he left” theory. I’m talking about our player development in general...this ain’t the first time a freshman or freshmen have taken over spots previously occupied or in line to be taken by an upper classman.

I guess the test for the theory about our player development is what do the players that left turn into once they go to other teams.
Do they turn the career around and "develope"?
Or are they for the most part the same?
I don't care enough to do the research but it would interesting.

For the life of me, I don't get this. We're 3 games in just about - who is going to take him now? Why not play out the semester? Logistically it makes no sense.

Just keep this in mind, coach richt dealt with it his way, coach diaz is dealing with the same thing, when coach diaz said "we'll find out who the real Miami guys are"! Just another part of the weeding out process, nothing is being handed to anybody, and one things for certain, guys are getting their chances to earn the jobs, NO EXCUSES! People transfering is not a bad thing, in most cases we'll be better for it. Also, just go back to what gaynor said earlier when he mentioned "its about a culture change", if guys are not willing to work harder, they're not going to last here!

right. He can’t take another red shirt so why not play through the year.

To say this is on the coaches is absurd. The entire offensive staff turned over, so they've had Reed for 8-9 months. It's fair to argue that Reed gained too much weight (Donaldson is having this problem too) so Baker and Feeley needed to be on him more with better diet and nutrition. But when you got Scaife from his own class starting, it's definitely more on Reed than either staff.

The much more likely reason that Reed quit is coaching turnover. He probably felt comfortable and supported more by Richt/Brown/Searels than Enos/Barry, and wasn't willing to put in the work for a new staff on a team where he didn't feel he fit in as well. Ft Meade isn't south Florida, it's certainly not #TNM. Culture shock probably probably led to this.

Absolutely. Quite frankly, once these guys leave, idgaf bout them so I don’t pay attention to their careers thereafter. I think the only guy I saw do well after leaving was Storm Johnson; it’s been so many other players that come & gone that I’ve lost track.
