Its hard to say. Chick obviously isn't explosive in the 270 range he played at the last 2 years. But he was also an end on a 3-4 not an outside LB like say Justin Houston from the Chiefs. He does play well at the point of attack as a 3-4 End but his skill set coming out of HS was 4-3 rush the passer. They ignored that and put them into their system.
Would he have been more productive at the 250 range as a 4-3 DE? I think so.
It a boils down to the scheme. We ask our DL is asked to play gap control. The coaches want to say we are blitzing more and playing ally of man. OK fair enough but that is the secondary. What are we doing on the Dline to be more aggressive? I haven't seen this team wreak havoc on the DLine at all these past 4 years.
Risk vs reward. I'd rather let the Dline pin their ears back then have Burns cb blitz every once in awhile. Watch Mizzous defense. There is a reason why they have had the best Dline in the SEC the last couple years. Every year they have a D end or 2 with 12+ sacks.
