Chase Smith Interview with Footballville

I'm saying in todays game its harder for a 200 pound linebacker to have success against the top teams in the country than it was in 1994.
Thus my point, it is a discussion I have had many times over with others. This belief that today's players are greater than previous greats. The only thing that has changed from each era is the advancement in sports science to maximize the athletic potential of each athlete. What does not evolve, what remains constant, is the God given, or for my atheist friends, naturally born talent these greats were born with. Ray Lewis in 1994 would still be Ray Lewis in 2022, the only difference would be Ray in 2022 would be faster and stronger and bigger than Ray in 1994. Sports science (training, nutrition, supplements) is the only thing that has changed, talent and skill has not. It is why I contend that the greats of years past would be equally great today, they just would be stronger/faster due to the advancement in sports science.

Dammit mane, I fast forwarded the video and thought wtf is Master P talking to him for...

Smith is a beast but let’s stop comparing him to maybe the best LB ever. Ray also was a great wrestler so he could leverage opposition in ways that mitigated his size disadvantage

The CIS weight obsession continues.
OCCC:
Me thought that ended with Golden, but the obsession continues.

Now I will say that Jimmy J's idea of svelte and speed is still out there, but the bulk and brawn contingent still worships at the altar of Bama with their weighted out players...

This will be recurring in my opinion and it all comes down to use of talent, and honing skill levels to get the ultimate performance........period...

I agree with you because if he's the best LB on the team than he should play regardless whether he's 195 or 255.

That said, in the last several years we've seen a proliferation of running QBs, many of whom are big bodied 220+. I think weight is a little more of an issue now, although, generally speaking, I agree with your sentiment.

Interesting that he thought Manny's staff wanted him to add more weight than he liked and wanted him to move down to DE.

Adding significant good weight, for most athletes, takes more than one spring, and there are numerous factors involved including the players own metabolism, their body structure, health stats, nutrition issues and on and on.

But I listen to people that are considered thought leaders in this, and that’s what they say. It’s extremely rare to get a guy to go from 200 to 230 over six months, without a lot of that just being bad weight.

Even a 20 pound increase of good lean weight for someone that weighs 200 pounds over just a few months is very uncommon.

And especially when you’re talking about a position like linebacker, we’re mobility, speed, and joint stability is essential.

The new science and nutrition staff will help but I agree. Adding lean muscle without bad weight is extremely difficult unless you are on steroids. It takes time and tons of calories/hard work

You mean a 99.8% Scamdemic of historic fraudulent reporting by the Left and the Right.

It probably simply had more to do with, mama’s overriding the decisions of their sons and calling the shots. not wanting their baby’s getting too far away from home during a pandemic, of historic proportion, with no known end in sight (at the time).🤷🏾‍♂️
In his case i think his mother passed a while ago when he was younger.

Chase has lost 5 lbs since his surgery. They are going to bulk him up when he is ready. Half of Oregon's LB's are over 240lbs. Some over 250 lbs. This team is not going to be small anymore.
We arent running Oregons defense. ...and Kevin Steele is quite comfortable with smaller lbs along with Strong.

I dont think we are going to have big lbs here any time soon either.

Do we wanna be Bama or not? Although we need more Chase Smiths then Corey Flaggs A 210 pound linebacker is not ideal trying to stop texas a@ m from running down our throats

One day, y'all will realize weight (or the lack there of) is not as much of a big deal y'all make it to be. No one here can tell me Smith wouldn't have played better than Flagg.

Ray Lewis was probably no more than 205 or so as a rail thin freshman. And to be clear, I am NOT comparing anyone to 52, but if you can play you can play -- and you will show it
