Charlie Skrong and Texas: That Was Fun While It Lasted!

Rumor last year when Strong speculation was fire/not fire...or is he jumping/not jumping...

Texas BOT we reviewing a package for Saban and staff that was in $10M/yr range...

Let that number sink in...$10M/yr...

That is beyond insanity...even for D1P5 mental illness...

It's really not insane at all. Some of these programs make 40-50M + in margin for the school. Seeing how important coaching is, it's really not unreasonable to say that a guy like Saban or Myer isn't worth 10-15M to a school. I think Bama would pay Saban 20M a year if you told them they'd win 4 titles in the next 7 years again.

The top paid coach in the NFL makes $8M, so yes, a coach of a football program at a not-for-profit educational institution is certifiably insane. At this pace, it's only a matter of time before Congress starts poking and prodding.

Herman has something to prove man.

Wouldn't be surprised if he sees this as an opportunity to make Houston the preeminent football power in the state.

Herman may, and I say may, have a chance to build a UM type of program at Houston (when we are dominating) given the talent pool surrounding the school. If he can keep the talent home, he can dominate the state ala UM. Houston just needs to get into a Power Five conference. The question would then be does Herman bolt for the money, or does he build a program that could dominate for years to come.

Herman will eventually take this job and he will dominate.

Agree and I think it'll coincide with A&M and Baylor becoming very average. Lots of Texas schools have filled that void while the big boy was down. If I'm Houston and want to stay relevant I start at least thinking about the Art Briles Project very soon.

Texas has a terrible defense because Strong is a terrible coach. Patrino now winning that he got rid of Strongs players.

Any real football fan knows that a defensive guru like Skrong needs at least 10 years before you see appreciable results on that side of the ball. Hilarious that his apologists point to Texas' supposed current offensive prowess as some sort of short term validation of Strong while STILL referencing his defensive acumen (in their eyes) as why he's a great coach overall. BS. Even a "good" defensive coach could have shown some improvement immediately with Brown's players and sure as **** wouldn't be giving up half a hundy to Cal now with HIS players.

Houston is a shoe-in to return to the Big 12 and there is absolutely no reason why Herman can't win in that conference consistently. Baylor has imploded and TCU finds a way to blow a big game. Some for Big Game Bob. He needs to be in a Big 5 conference to make the round of 4. Even though it is a commuter school, the amount of money in Houston is in units of GNP. I wouldn't shocked if Houston pays Herman whatever he wants to stay.

I was actually at the game...I'm a Cali boy and Cal alum. Strong was outcoached by Sonny Dykes of all people. The feeling was that if Cal could hang, Texas would crumble under the pressure which is exactly what they did. No one on Texas looked impressive other than their RBs. It's going to be another tough year for them. I'm a fan of the U way more than than Cal, but still....Go Bears!

Could he not just move to UT and poach the best talent out of Houston?

People still defending Charlie Strong? His record at Texas is worse than Al Golden's here.

There will be a lot of coaching turnover this season, just like last season, in college football. A couple of more loses, Strong will be gone and be replaced by Herman.

I had 2 of my boys call me and said they remember me telling them I thought Petrino would be a great fit in Miami before goldie got fired. I jumped on the Butch train because I wanted us to get a coach who knew Miami and talent. Happy we got Richt, but Herman and Petrino's stock as hot as any I've ever seen.

Think of Miami when the program is rolling. We can generally choose who we want out of So. Fla, because the players want to stay close to home and play for a winner. It is not as easy to poach players. When the program is down they go north. Herman can build that in Houston, keep the players home to play in front of family and friends, especially if they are power five.
