Changes to coaching staff

His scoring offense was 108 and 63 his last two seasons as an oc. I don’t think his offenses cracked the top 40 while at Troy. Other than at ttu where literally everyone scores his offensive resume is rather unimpressive.
He’s very highly respected and coaches would go pick his brain about offensive football when he was at Uab. He had great offenses at TT and that’s when Tubberville was there, it’s not like this was the Leach dsys lol. He won’t be out oc but we could do a lot worse. Hes lead some epic upsets as a OC and HC in his time.

Normally i’d say no but maybe this year opened his eyes to using a very complex , non player friendly offense. Especially with all the issues guys had picking it up. I’ve been told he’s not married to an offense so i guess we’ll see.
I really hope so. Manny Navaro reached out to Andrew Nemec who covered Oregon for The Oregonian and he had this to say when asked about Mario's imprint on the offense:

“(Joe) Moorhead would never say it, but when things didn’t go well, Mario wanted control,” Nemec said. “He wanted to be more ground and pound. His staff would say, ‘We want to set stuff up with play-action and take deep shots.’ Mario would say, ‘No. We want to win a rock fight.’ When he left, there were Oregon fans who said he mismanaged timeouts and didn’t make halftime adjustments. He wants to win ground and pound. When things don’t go well, he gets really conservative. It was a big issue for Oregon fans in the end.”

Nothing new or groundbreaking, but it seeing it come from a reporter and that he not only wants to run but actually overruled his offensive staff adds to the concern (for me anyway) and we have certainly seen the mismanaged timeouts. But - as you noted - coaches can change their philosophies and maybe this season was a wakeup call.

Steele ain't going anywhere right now. You can't blow up both offense and defense the same year. Gotta choose. You address the offense now. Let Steele have a little more time to build the defense.
I also think the majority of our defensive issues boil down to lack of talent at LB and coaching of the secondary.

Hopefully the LB spot is sured up with youngsters getting experience and the transfer portal.

As for the secondary, almost the entire group has taken a step back which points to coaching and we all have heard the rumors about Addae. Upgrade the position coaching (and a few players) and I bet we see a significant reduction in blown coverages.

Maybe that’s how people at Oregon felt but watching games like UNC I have a hard time understanding that.

I guess. He walked right in after leach left when that offense was rocking and rolling. I’m glad to hear he won’t be our next OC lol. Do you think there’s any chance for mullen or herman?

As WR coach? Yes, great recruiter BUT:

- We don’t know exactly how involved was with playcalling while at Clemson (it looks like Elliott was the man in charge there).
- At that time it was very easy to recruit elite WR with that orange paw logo on the shirt, it’s not a gimme that it will translate (i.e. Addae landed 5-star after 5-star at UGA)

I think we could do better than Scott tbh.

R u basing this off his HC record at USF? B/c we can say the same thing about Elliot, too. I’m not saying anything about him calling plays for us, but we would be foolish not to bring this dude on staff w/ his recruiting resume, including ties to So Fla. He can name drop guys in the NFL he’s directly recruited & coached.

No, I was basing that off a 2015 article that said that the play caller during Scott's co-OC days at Clemson was Elliott.

Obviously, he coached there after 2015 so things could have changed at some point and he could be a bright offensive mind even without a ton of experience as OC/play-caller.

I was just pointing out that we don't really know because he never called plays on his own.

I don't know how concerning that a HC who ultimately is where the buck stops wants to take control of a facet of the team "when things didn't go well".

The lack of adjustments and game mismanagement would be more glaring issues for me though. But I would think the coordinators would be the ones to make the half time adjustments and implement and not the HC. I doubt Mario would be discouraging coordinators making adjustments.

Some of the OC's being mentioned prior to him settling on Gattis makes me think that Mario is interested in a dynamic type of offense and not simply ground and pound. After all, Mario did play under Erickson who installed a pretty innovative offense for that time so I am sure understands the importance of innovations and not stuck on any particular philosophy.

"Joe Moorhead would never say it"

Well then why should I believe that guy for typing it. Way to much speculation on where Mario stands on what he wants to run. We know he wants to run it but its been proven that ALMOST every top team runs more. I think Pace and less of those condensed looks...at least until we get 4-5 monsters across that line that can do what they want when they want. I hope oregon loses to Utah again this weekend and maybe even to Oregon St then. Maybe even there bowl too. Time to move on guys...its over and Lanning will probably leave them within 1-2 years as well. Its a great stepping stone job. Take it as a compliment.

Yeah; I feel u, but that was a while ago & I wasn’t really interested in bringing him in as a play caller vs. the Co-title & WR coach. Would like him & another Co-(as the play caller) & QB coach. And definitely not Ponchetta.

Joe Morehead at Mississippi State ran his quarterback over 200 times

TrumpyCane wants To know if that’s considered ground and pound

C'mon man - regardless on what your take on Mario's offensive philosophy is, people communicate things w/o saying them directly all of the time.
