I don't understand how they were able to beat VT. VT had much better talent (particulary on both lines) and still couldn't get it done at HOME.....that does have me a bit concerned.
There is great value in high number of rushing attempts. Georgia Tech understands that and consequently they win many games against teams they otherwise have no business defeating. Virginia Tech never would have lost that game if they had kept the ball on the ground in the 4th quarter. Brewer gave it away via interceptions and Georgia Tech was happy to oblige.
Canes fans are too busy with simpleton comments about a high school offense that they don't bother to notice that many other ACC teams have not been nearly as successful against Georgia Tech as we have.
I bet Miami at pick-em in this game. Unfortunately I missed the plus points at Wynn. Johnny Avello for decades has not believed in road favorites, dating to his days running Bally's sportsbook. If you want a bargain on a road team near pick-em or as small favorite, Avello will give it to you almost every time if he puts up the first number. I can't count how many times I've taken advantage of that in football and basketball. This time Avello opened Georgia Tech -3. Unbelievable. I don't know how he expected even action at that price. If I were still in Las Vegas full time I would have been there to pounce on it. But I had to rely on friends who didn't show up until later at night. We ended up with Canes at pick.
Unlike our first two road games, Miami's offense matches up very well against Georgia Tech's soft defense. As long as Coley runs basic plays we should be fine. I was still more than annoyed at the play calling last week. For the second consecutive year all we had to do against Duke was line up in power formations and abuse the running game while allowing pass plays to flow out of that. Instead, we somehow brainstormed 16 passes and 8 runs in the first quarter. It should have been the opposite. Coley doesn't seem to grasp the value of rushing attempts against an outmanned opponent. That's the beauty of old school power programs like Nebraska. If the vulnerability in the trenches is there they'll unapologetically attack it. Too many pass oriented teams don't sense that their cutesy plays are not only unnecessary but harmful. Don't scheme when you can can shove. Even Duke was comical in that regard. They were throwing one ridiculous deep sideline prayer after another instead of running straight at us.
Georgia Tech's quarterback is more clever on the perimeter than their recent guys. But his offensive line is not dependable up the middle. We should get plenty of penetration, forcing them into passing situations. Thomas is not accurate at all in those spots. He'll probably burn us occasionally with early down passes.
Overall I'd be surprised to lose this game, even if the prior poster is correct to summarize that our last two meetings were very problematic. I think we lose last year if that game gets to 24-7, which seemed inevitable other than self destruction on their part.
This Canes defense got a taste for attacking football last week and should have some fun possessions on Saturday. The opponent is nowhere near as capable as Nebraska, despite all the nonsense posts here two weeks ago downplaying Nebraska as mediocre. There should be at least a 2 touchdown different in the spread of Canes at Georgia Tech as opposed to Canes at Nebraska.
